Less than a mile from York’s historic centre, this friendly hotel, built in 1870, retains stained glass windows and a splendid oak staircase. There are good-value rooms and a restaurant and bar. The Elmbank Hotel and Lodge’s rooms each have a TV, telephone, tea/coffee-making facilities and a work area. A private bathroom in every bedroom has complimentary toiletries. The rooms are located in either the main building, lodge or courtyard to the rear of the hotel. The elegant restaurant and separate bar reflect the hotel’s Victorian character. Many meals and beverages are made from locally sourced ingredients. There is an extensive wine list and tea and coffee can be taken in the comfortable lounge. York’s ancient city walls can be reached in just 10 minutes’ walk, with a further 5 to 10 minutes’ walk taking guests to the historic attractions, including the spectacular York Minster. Alternatively there is a bus stop outside the hotel, and from there a bus in to town takes 3 minutes. York Railway Station is just a 10-minute walk or few minutes by car, and the Elmbank has limited, free parking. There is also a bus stop near the hotel, with sightseeing tours going in to town. York Racecourse is a few minutes' away.

The friendly service. The wonderful evening meal from the kitchen.The stunning views from the dining rooms and lounge/side rooms. The lanscaping, seating, walls and walk ways around and up to the cliff edge were a particular dleight. I was travelling with a disabled lady, her accomodation was excellent and staff extemely helpful and pleasant.Easy walking distance to city centre and attractions made the visit enjoyable.

We found that it was two feet too high on the wall for comfortable viewing. But, this is such a small point in view of our pleasant stay. No, though my wife and I are fairly easy to please.Television reception was particulary poor in both rooms. only the bathroom had no window and the extractor fan was not working. a lot of building work going on during the day. cleaner could knock before trying to enter a room. the surprised price of a breakfast and lack of visible information. The hotel has clearly done a lot better than the poor blogs indicated!. continental breakfast option rather limited. Hotel history notes were free, but stopped frustratingly at 1903. I needed to know more!. Don't drink the house wine it's disgusting. The hotel was a bit shabby in places and in need of some refurbishment but it was very clean and this didn't spoil the enjoyment of the stay.Had to have the heat turned on and shower did not work properly.
