I travelled from Finland with friends to the Kilkenny Ormonde Hotel in July 2013. We had a wonderful stay with a very comfortable and extremely spacious room. Our friends were upgraded to a superior executive suite which was a nice surprise and we also received a big discount on parking. The hotel itself and it's facilities are without fault, and breakfast was delicious as expected. What impressed me the most however was the way the staff treated us having arrived back late after a day's stroll.
all reviews » i would like to say a big thank you so much to the kilkenny ormonde hotel for looking after my 18 yr old son and his girlfriend..they stayed for 2 nights last weekend as a xmas present from me, from the minute they arrived they were made feel very welcome and were giving a free upgrade to a suite..this they absolutly loved as it was their first time away together and after such a great time they didnt want to come home..so thank you so much ormonde hotel and staff for all they did to make my so. The spa was amazing the girls espcially denise were so professional and talented with their hands! Great spa deals!..My bofriend and I loved the size,furnishing and layout of O'Reillys bar - pity it was dead quite when we were there, its a great little gem... The size of our suite was just perfect and suited us very well..big bonus was when the friendly receptionist from the hotel rang me on my mobile to inform me our room was ready when to check in!...Great location for weekend on the booze wi. I liked how the hotel reception staff solved the problem we faced on arrival. Three separate beds had been booked. Hotel only does double bed and single per room. Sorted eventually by giving us two inter connecting rooms. letsbookhotel.com like many other online sites don't make it easy for customers to select some such issues precisely. Hotel was lovely and spacious and has a fantastic spa that needs to be better advertised. Pool was out of commission but we were very well looked after with a. i liked staying here because it was located right in the centre of the city which was great for going out at night because we were close to all the local clubs and pubs. The staff were also very friendly and helpful which made for a pleasant stay. We also had food in the bar which was excellent and we were served with a smile. Genuine Friendly staff. Great location. I had excellent facial treatment in spa. Very well served at breakfast and dinner.Would book again to stay in hotel. Close location to Dublin and handy car park opposite hotel. Kilkenny city wonderful and easily walked around... The pool and gym were excellent, the rooms was very spacious and the breakfast in the mornings was lovely. For anyone Coeliac I would strongly recommend the Ormonde as it is one of the few hotels that we have visited that have catered for Coeliac guests. The staff was very nice and helpful. The breakfasts are also very good. The city of Kilkenny is wanderful and we enjoyed walking through the marvelous castle park. There are a lot of shop and plenty of very good restaurants. Location close to the city was great. Hotel was very spacious with appealing decor. Beds were the most comfortable we had during our 3 week trip. Front Desk staff (Roisin) was composed, friendly, and very helpful. It is very central to everywhere. eg. shops, churches, castle, and night life. Castle is amazing and beautiful grounds to go for a walk. We thought we wouldn't be able to book treatment on Sunday but were happily surprised when we could and did. In Ireland air conditioning is not the norm so it was very pleasant to have an electric fan in the bedroom during a spell of very hot weather. Bedrooms were very spacious and clean. Location!! Very easy to walk around. Do some shopping. Lovely places to eat. Visit the castle. Indoor pool with sauna an steam room. Plus gym for the keep fit enthusiasts.. Brilliant location, nice bar and good food. We made a complaint, they dealt with it well and gave us a reduction in our bill. Would happily come back to the Ormonde. Couldn't sleep as pillows were so hard. Friend couldn't sleep with fan noise from kitchen below. We were given a very late check out to make amends. Cannot find anything. We found the extractor fan in the bathroom was a little weak and clogged, which limited the ventilation in the bathroom. Maybe stay a bit short would have liked to drive outside of the city. we decided to eat on our last evening at the Hotel. We had the steak sandwich (most of it was all fat) and a little tough and were charged 32 euro for it. Incredible. Will not be eating steak there again. There was a pair of someone's shoes in the wardrobe. Some confusion over whether we could book treatments on Sunday in KO. Only a minor complaint but toast at breakfast could have been toasted on both sides and served in a toast rack to keep the slices crisp. Otherwise breakfast was perfect. No spinner for wet swim wear! Which would be so handy. "hard to dry out swimwear daily". The staff done their very best, were always busy but there didn't seem to have been enough on duty. We couldn't check in until 6pm as the room was not ready. the only problem was the disco in the ground floor..really noisy in the night because they sometimes left open doors..no problem when they were closed. Their was a pretty bad smell in the hotel lifts and lobby. Not confined to Ormonde as it prevailed in the other hotel where we attended a wedding. Seemed to be some serious sewerage issues in Kilkenny during bank holiday weekend!!. Nothing comes to mind really, no complaints. nothing. The pool was out of action as was the sauna. The service at dinner was not great. The information on the menu was not correct but we were only told when the course ordered was not the one served. The wrong wine was also served - it was opened before the waiter told us that it was not what we had asked for. Pool was closed No safe in room. Over my two night break, j found nothing negative to report about this hotel. Had to go outside to get to spa (minor complaint). The staff were not very friendly. Décor is a bit `dated` and a facelift is overdue. Mattress and pillows were too hard. The bar was boring!. Nothing really. No fridge in room. Bar closed early. As a smoker I would have liked the option of a room that I could smoke in. Bedrooms could do with a bit of freshening up. Furniture/decor starting to look a bit dated. Family room looked out onto street. There was a wedding on the first night we stayed so it was quite noisy. pillows were not very comfortable but everything else perfect.

Travelling information

From Dublin Airport, follow the signs for the m50. Continue on the m50 until the exit for the n7 (junction 9). Turn right onto the n7. Continue until the road becomes the m7 (at Naas). Turn left onto the m9 to the South-East. Follow the m9 and the n9 to Carlow. Continue straight through Carlow towards Kilkenny. On entering Kilkenny city you will see a Ford dealer on your right; continue a short distance to the first roundabout. Turn left at the roundabout. At the next roundabout take a right towards the city centre. Continue along this road for about one mile and you will pass the castle. At the traffic lights, turn left and then immediately right. You are now on Ormonde Street and the hotel is approximately 100 metres up this street on your right.
