simple and affordable. environment is good.Excellent staff. Nice place. Its great staying in a converted monastery, the shower, the room and the staff. Its close to centre!I will stay again. peace and quiet, helpful reception. The quietness of the hotel and being only a 5 minute walk from the centre of the city. monastery atmosphere. atmosphere. good atmosphere, special surroundings, nice and easygoing friendly staff, anonymous and easygoing atmosphere for me as guest. Positive was that the showers and toilets were never occupied and one didnt have to wait. Good comfortable sleep, matrass was good, no noise in the night from outside.at the reception counter, staffs had big warm hert to welcome thier guests. Everything was perfect but it is not worth paying for the breakfast.Savvy approach to bathroom consumables, limited number of tv channels inEnglish, too small closet for cloth (for 2 persons). It can be noisy with thin walls between rooms.Hot water not available one morning. no. The mosquitos came during the night (but the Night porter lent the machine)only then could I sleep (allergic to mosquitos). There was a party it was a horrible racket til 4am (they kindly took 20% of the bill). authentic, perhaps, but sometimes worn fittings (taps, locks). Inconvenient not having toilet or shower facilities in the room. My room had a rather strange smell about it but I became used to it and it didn't spoil my stay.hotel restaurant facility only open in weekends - pity, sounded like good food. Showers and toilets on floor, shower was still ok, but toilet was so far away (on a different floor!) and only one toilet for a long floor. Several times I requested something at the reception (a second pillow, and a bottle of water), which the receptionist nicely responded to with "yes, sure, we will bring it to your room then", but it never was brought to me anymore! Thus, I gave up requesting. They did not have a door tag that says like, "still sleeping, do not come into the room."so constantly cleanign person came to my room and pounded my door when I was still sleeping. she wanted to finish her work as fast as she could.that is the thing that I do not like.

Hotel information details
Like many towns in the Middle Ages, Ghent was enclosed by several canals. These were meant to protect the town from the dangers that threatened its inhabitants. Near the gate ("poort" in dutch) to the town there was a field ("akker" in dutch): the Poortackere.
In this field a complex for beguines was built, which was also called Poortackere by the people of Ghent. In one of the walls of the building there is an 18th century stone which reveals that the beguine house was founded in 1278. Not long after this, a chapel and a churchyard were added. Poortackere mainly housed older and sick beguines.
During the French revolution all cloisters, churches and beguin complexes were seized by the town councils, so the council of Ghent confiscated Poortackere. In 1863 the site was sold to the Count Joseph de Hemptinne, a notorious maecenas of the Neogothic Movement. With his permission, a congregation was housed here.
At first there were plans to restore the old buildings, but in the end a new, neogothic cloister was built. Most buildings of Poortackere date from that period. A new chapel, two inside gardens and an orphanage became part of the complex.
After World War II the site was an orphanage, a house for young women and a student residence. In 1998 there were still 6 nuns living here, but the maintenance costs became too much, so the buildings were sold.
Thanks to private initiative, the site has been transformed into a hotel, guest rooms and a restaurant. As a result, everybody can now enjoy the architecture and the special atmosphere.
Information about the area
Situated in the hart of the old city centre of Ghent, 500 m. from the famous towers and the shopping areas.
Room information details
A feeling of peace, freedom and unconcern comes over you in the more austere neogothic part of the site, the Guest-house. Perhaps you will sleep in the St Cecilia room or the monastery cell where sister Philomena stayed for so many years.
