The Great Southern is located in a brilliant vibrant area of the CBD and is only a short walk from Central Station, which was terrific when we arrived and when departing...straight off the train and only had to walk our cases a few hundred metres. Paddy's Market and Chinatown is literally right around the corner and the 555 Free CBD Shuttle Bus is located almost at the front door. As we were in Sydney for four nights to explore the city and shop and not spend much time in the room, everything.
all reviews » Best thing about it was the location - right smack in the middle of George Street, very near to Central Station and best place for shopaholics as the Haymarket area is just around the corner. The room was surprisingly clean and well-kept, not a 5-star luxury one but had a pleasant experience. Felt secure and safe enough to leave my items inside the room (it has a safe for valuables such as passports, etc), the reception was very accommodating and instantly booked my airport transfer. There's a . way beyond all expectations for the price, I cant fault the staff, the room, the cleanliness everything was excellent. Breakfast was huge variety even French toast and pancakes and was hot and topped up as soon as someone took something. Location fantastic, 100m from Central so easy to go anywhere Bedrooms very clean NO noise and we faced George street straight down Eddy Ave Floor boards squeak near lift so that could be annoying if room located near there but it was all amazing and only place . I requested a quiet room on a lower floor. I was very happy with the quiet room on the 6th floor but we were disturbed frequently on the Saturday night between 11pm and 3am by inconsiderate noisy guests returning to their rooms. Not the hotel's fault though. The hotel was very convenient to Chinatown, Central Station is only a few minutes walk and it only takes about 15 minutes to get to the Airport from Central. The hotel itself is well presented, old and full of character features. I would de. Good value hotel but be prepared to pay for any extras such as luggage storage, use of in-room safe and internet. Very clean. Friendly helpful staff in all departments. I had problems with the internet in the room -ethernet cable- and ended up using their internet kiosk in the lobby.Great location. A 5 minute walk from Central Railway and its airport rail link. Buses right outside the door with free bus and light rail nearby. Pub style dining was good and plenty of dining options nearby. I'll b. The hotel was very nice and the staff was very friendly. We only stayed a couple of days, so we did not get the cleaning service in the room, but if you would need glasses, towels or anything, they will give it to you with no problem at all. It it 5 minute walk from the station, so it is great and it is within walking distances to the center and they have a bus stop in front of the hotel. The hotel it is not new, but the room we stayed was very clean and enough for us. My daughter and I loved the location so close to the station as as I had come to Sydney by bus and she had flown in and then taken the airport train, We found that our room was very comfortable and clean . We loved the decor and photographs. We were able to walk everywhere or purchase our transport tickets from the station to cover our busy travel days. We would certainly recommend the hotel and would stay again during another visit to Sydney. The location of The Great Southern is perfect for what we want. It is so close to Paddy's Market, China Town and the Capitol Theatre. Central Station is about a five minute walk. The free bus runs along George Street where the hotel is located as does the hop on, hop off bus (which you can also catch in front of Central Station). It is also one of the only hotels to include buffet breakfast. We were able to walk to Darling Harbour also. I have stayed at Great Southern many times. I arrived mid morning and although my room was not ready, I was offered another room so I could leave my bags instead of putting them in storage until later. The front desk staff are always polite, efficient and helpful. The Great Southern is my hotel of choice for overnight stays as it is located close to all transport and facilities in Central Sydney. The best thing about this hotel was the proximity to all the attractions in Sydney. We could walk everywhere, and could come back in between different outings to freshen up and have a rest. It was a very good little room for what we needed. Cleaned nicely every morning too. We never ate at the restaurant but that looked a nice place to eat- a lot quieter than the other eateries we tried. Thanks. A well located hotel (although it located in the backpackers' section of George Street it is within 2 minute's walk of central station - i.e. 20 minute's from the airport - , and a few minutes walk the other way to corporate downtown). The hotels retains some beautiful art-deco finishes on the inside. If you want an alternative from cookie-cutter hotels, Great Southern is a good choice. The hotel is in a very convenient location for Sydney Central Train Station (visible from the front of the hotel), Chinatown (go out of the back entrance of the hotel and you are virtually there) and has a vibrant bar at ground floor level. There is also an art-deco theme to the public areas of the hotel which is very stylish. And it is relatively cheap for the Sydney cbd. Friendly staff that helped get us a better room with a view after seeing the first room, which was quite disappointing (small room with inner courtyard view). There are different rooms which will give different experiences, i.e. some have bathroom windows, some dont. Overall, the location is great, it is value for money and it is clean. Hotel was clean and staff were friendly. Room decor was somewhat outdated but I suppose that's reflected in the price. The price was very decent considering the location was fantastic. Very close to central station and right next to Chinatown. It's more like a 3 star than a 4 star hotel. Some hidden a costs which were quite annoying... This my regular place to stay in Sydney - near all transport and very convenient to get to and from. I appreciated the upgrade to an Exec suite and enjoyed the visit of the sulphur crested cockatoo on the balcony whilst we were enjoying coffee! I have stayed several times and will stay many more times as i have always been looked after. We had room 804 it was great. We found the room excellent and the location quiet which we needed after a 11 hour flight. It was great to be able to check in and get dinner without having to leave the hotel and the same applied to breakfast the next morning when we had to get back to the airport for a flight home. Location was amazing especially for public transport. The restaurant downstairs had a great variety and was excellent value for money. Very handy to be in the mainstreet close to so many attractions for sight seeing We were there for my grandson who lives nearby your hotel just a few streets away.. The room we had 208 was quiet and away from the noise of the traffic. It's in the center of CBD, easy access to shopping centers, restaurants and cafes. The room was neat and comfortable, with cable, refrigerator, good air conditioning, also equipped with extra blanket, pillow, iron and ironing board. The staff were really friendly and helpful when I asked questions about Sydney! Particularly an (I think) Italian gentleman working on reception. The breakfast was also good and the room was comfortable and always very clean. The hotel delivers what it promises. Its old fashioned style is quite well maintained. It is overall good, staff is diligent and helpful. It is well located in the Chinese area, not far from the station and Darling harbour. The rooms were good - a bit small but certainly adequate. I do stay in the city from time-to-time for social reasons and have never stayed at the Great Southern, but I will be in the future. cant fault anything at all. Had dinner in the hotel dining room one night. I paid $15.95 for the worst hamburger and worst chips I have ever had in my life. The hamburger was extremely salty and inedible. Better off to go to Maccas. We arrived on a very humid day and it would have been nice if they had had a jug of cold water in the fridge as most hotels do. Filthy ladies toilet near gaming area when the toilet near the bar was 'out of order'. As with all large hotels, wi-fi is not included. Room 424 is in need of minor refurbishment. The tap over the wash basin was loose and the whole pipe and tap moved all over the place when I tried to use it. All good, maybe s bit expensive. It can take a while to check-in/check-out as the desk is quite small. There are not enough lifts/elevators so it can take time to go up/down to/from your room .. however as the building is quite old this is something that can't be fixed without major refurbishment. However .... I stayed here in 2010 so I was prepared for all of this and it didn't prevent me from booking there a second time. Rooms with inner courtyard view can be depressing... Luckily I did not have such a room... A few irritating things: 1. You have to pay for luggage storage @ $2 per item per day. It's rather annoying when you turn up early from an international flight and the room's not ready so you have to pay to store your luggage if u want to leave the hotel. 2. They charge you $3 per day to use the room safe. Ridiculous if you ask me! 3. Internet costs an arm and leg. Nothing. Absolutely nothing to complain about here. Our room was right opposite the lift ie only about 2meters so we did here people coming & going but it didn't cause us that much inconvieience. No complaints. I thought the hotel should have provided a key to the in-room safe without expecting guests to pay for its use. Why create irritation over a few dollar?. Worn crumpled carpet in the hall ways. I would have liked there to be some wine glasses in the room and maybe a coffee table in the living area. such minor things but would have just made it perfect. The rooms were quite small with limited space to store clothes and bags. The ensuite was the same with just a small vanity and no storage. Made it a little difficult when staying for five nights. nothing. the tiles in the bathroom - in the bath area could have had the grout bleached to get rid of the mildew and the fridge was full of water - small things really. Nothing- I was extremely happy with the hotel and plan to stay there again. No adverse comments. nothing on this visit... Could be cleaner (floor&bathroom). You have to say do you want cooling or heating as you cannot change it by yourself. It was very cold first night as we did not know that. It is barely 4-star hotel in my opinion, it is really more like a good 3-star. No place to park, day+night was 60A$ first day and 70A$ in parking nearby (Wilson parking). However, for the price of room, it was ok. Found the room a wee bit small for a twin. Nothing to complain about all very good. The hotel was a bit noisy (plant & equipment, not other guests) - but I'm a light sleeper. There wasn't a view from the room - but I wasn't there for the view. Although the rooms where generous we were on the top floor with the buildings a\c above our room which was very noisy although they did shut off during the night, as it was a 1 night stay not a real problem. Original room smelt strongly of cigarette smoke. Staff dealt with it immediately and reallocated us a lovely room, spotlessly clean and fresh. The Great Southern Bar attached to the hotel is not a place to be. Looks like a place for heavy drinkers. nothing. The hotel only had 2 guest elevators which were not near each other, the exhaust fan in my bathroom had no switch button. Nothing!. WiFi and breakfast are on the expensive side. There are far better deals around. I also did not expected to have to pay a credit card fee, the phrasing on the web site, led me to think that it was not due. Nothing - everything was more than satisfactory. No concerns. I did not like that booking .com advertised 84 dollars a room We stayed 2nights was charged double that for the first night and had to pay another 74 dollars to stay for the second the booking got horribly mixed up also they thought we were only staying one night ....could someone check that out and email me on it Please . This time we got a king bed made up from two king singles that each sloped off to the outsides, and lumpy pillows. I do not like having to fill out a response for letsbookhotel.com every time I stay in the same hotel. Earlier this week I responded to your mail asking if it was necessary that I be contacted every time I stay at the Great Southern-given there is a hotel form to be filled in available in each room. Apart from damage to the back of the bathroom door, nothing.
