We'd liked a lot the environment of the hotel/hostel, with the nice green area all around and a great breakfast. I have booked a room for two on the new area, which is really nice, new and cosy; and another bed only on the common area. On arrival they nicely suggested an extra bed on the room, which I accepted after checking the space (only a little more expensive than the shared-room bed, but staying at the same room, with shower facilities). Breakfast is nice, although we have to pay extra. S.
all reviews » The old hotel was charming and picturesque. Beautiful grounds. We booked there at the beginning and end of our trip. Our second stay we were moved to the newer Park Continental hotel, which was newer and quite elegant. They also have an annex, which is not as nice, and we were moved there as the Montarina was full. The room was smaller with no frills, a definite downgrade. Still, the location is good, the staff very accomodating, and the value for the area is very good. The hotel staff's service are excellent. There is a short cut to go to the hotel from railway station / cable car to down town. There is an hotel next to it, which is under the same owner, they provide you some choices either stay in Montarina or the one next to it. If a quite room for you is important, suggest you should chose the room that facing to their gard instead of the room facing the railway. Our room was excellent and could not fault the hotel. We stayed in the separate building just a few steps up the path from the main building and it was very new inside with a great bathroom and room a good size. A short walk to station (up a short hill) and also to the furnicular to the town. Lovely place and recommend for value for money. Didnt use pool but looked great. Very nice Hotel - Hostel property with friendly and supportive staff. Our room was very clean and comfortable and their dining facilities were good for providing opportunities to interact with other travelers. This property is up on a hillside and requires some walking to access the city or lake. The Hotel was so good and sweet. Ladies on the lobby are very helpful. Talks really good english. Gave me a Lugano map and told me everything that we can do. Has a free open internet. If the weather was better we can enjoy more in the hotel. There is a swimming-pool outside. The room was comfortable and clean. It was close to the train station and an easy walk to the main part of the town and the lake. They offered a good breakfast buffet every morning. The staff was very friendly. I would definately stay here again. Note: This review is for "Continental Parkhotel" instead of "Montarina". We booked with the latter, but got a room in the former. Pros: friendly staff, clean, quiet (despite the nearby train station), location, value for money. Pool, BEAUTIFUL rooms with high ceilings and a real feel into them, staff was very accommodating and helpful, kitchen was tiny, but at least you could cook a decent meal (not common when backpacking Switzerland!!!), good price. Liked the breakfast, the view from the restaurant...and most importantly, when I said that the mattress was uncomfortable, and the WiFi didn't work -- I returned in the evening to find a new mattress, and functioning WiFi. Great location, except the noises of the train station are a bit too close, but the sound insulation was good. The grounds of the hotel are lovely and tropical and beautiful setting, where the breakfast is served. Selection of food is excellent. The balcony off our room was a bonus. It was vey near the train station which was very convenient. very kind staff, they have 4 buildings - one is a quite big hotel and they gave us very comfortable double room. the park around the hotels is amaizing with palms, flowers and the pool. The garden is beautiful with a brilliant view of the Lugano lake. Everything was fine - the kitchen and dining room closing at 21:00 h is a little bit early. We came by train, and carrying heavy luggage (long trip) so was not a nice easy-walk there with the cars around (as the stairs were even harder to go). Tiny room next to the elevator at the annex of the Park Continental hotel. Nothing - All good. Kitchen was very small and difficult to use with so many other people. The hotel located in a good location in Lugano but they did not think about old people with wheelchairs. We had too much problem to walk to the hotel from Train station. Because there were too many stairs to reach the hotel. If you can not climb that stairs you should have walk from the car way, which is too long for an old lady and a girl who is caring 2 big bags and a backpack. Rooms are so small. Its hard to fit. Breakfast not included. kitchen is a bit tiny, which might be a bit of a problem when there are lots of guests. The "dependence" was a bit too much like a dormitory - -thin walls, and the neighbor's snoring was keeping me awake. No soaps or shampoos worth description. Trains at night were loud. Train station was a bit too close, but in the end this was not a big problem, due to good sound insulation. Near railwayline and a bit of noice when the window eas open. No lift so we had to carry our cases up a flight of stairs. Trains were a bit noisy but to be expected, due to its close proximity to the station. Price of the restaurant! Too much 7,50 ch for a bottle of water!. Nothing. Expensive, but everything was in Lugano. The practice to leave dormitory doors (room doors which give direct access to outside) not locked at night to allow hostel guests to come in late at night. And the need to leave them ajar since the rooms are so hot at summer nights. It means close to zero security. Not enough electrical sockets to charge everyone's phones & gadgets. Kitchen available for cooking is too small for so many people. Comfort room was a bit small. Verry warm in the room. Airco didn't work verry good. Guests at other rooms where noisy in the night. Only downside is that we were underneath the restaurant and it was getting noisy at about 6.30 am when the staff was preparing for breakfast. Nothing. The dorm beds are very close to each other. Sharing a room with other people is a bit like sharing a bed with them. The kitchen is a little bit small, but not a big problem. Nothing. Hotel was somewhat noisy. When hauling luggage from the station they could have cut our journey in half by giving clearer instructions as to which reception we should use. That there was a loud work building houses next to the hotel, which was very noisy. Lots of steps to negotiate from railway station to hotel. I didn´t like the stairs. It was up a hill... not advisable if you are arriving via train with many luggage bags. The rooms were cramped. The beds very close each other ... no space between beds. 3 euros for a duvet, lockers you need a 2 swiss franc coin (most people won't have this on arrival, therefore leaving their valuable unattended to get one). Person next to me snored like a train and i got no sleep (not the hotel's fault just annoying). No traveler atmosphere. No curtain and sunlight wake me up early. Hostel athmosphere, room was very poor and small... Never ever.
