Great location, nice rooms, fun theme. Would definitely recommend staying here. The other reviewers are right about some points: the rooms are a bit small, there is some noise from trams, the staircase was steep, etc, but none of these things bothered me and I was quite pleased with my stay here. The theme of the hotel is fantastic and funky and suited the purpose for my visit to Amsterdam which was to see Hot Chip Live in the Paradiso (which is about a 5 minute walk away). Room was newly refurbished, clean and staff are very friendly and approachable.

Ample-sized rooms for a good price with a fun theme. The atmosphere and the location. A great central location. It is close to the Leidseplein and venues such as Paradiso and the Melkweg. It was aslo very convenient because several tram stops are close by, making it easy to get around to other parts of the city. Also easy for cab drivers to find it late at night. Clean and comfortable. Nice canal views. Close to Vondelpark- was good to go running there. Staff very helpful with recommendations for restuarants and shopping out of the main tourist traps.The rooms very nice, albeit very small, but for 25 Euros I was veryhappy with staying at this hotel. I also asked for a late check out andthat was processed without and hassel. Very nice. I hope I will find agood deal with this hotel in the future sometime soon. And there wasfree wireless internet. It was updated, and felt cozy.The theme. The location. Interesting decor. Room very small, no hanger space. Cute and ok for 2 nights, had tobuy 2 nights. the steep stairs. Avoid the basement - In general I would recommend this hotel for its cleanliness/location, however, my first room was in the basement and there was an unbearable humming/vibration from upstairs throughout the night. I was luckily able to change rooms the second night and was moved to the first floor. I had no problem with the light traffic passing by but I can imagine it could be difficult for som. Was a little noisy from the street at night, but I had ear plugs with me so I slept well. I was greated with a "You're late, check in is normally only untill 6pm"(I arrived at 8pm). After making this point she said there was noproblem to check in. I must however say that I never saw any informationstating that check in is between the hours of 2pm and 6pm.I booked w/ breakfast included, only to find out, it was extra. (i) Narrow stairs but not a big issue (ii) the noise from the streets even though it's not exactly the main road but we can hear everything from people talking on pavements to cars/buses driving past. Try not to get the rooms at the basement if you can!. The stairs- always mare sure your floor. We paid €120 for a single night and got a basement room which was stiflingly hot, shared bathrooms which were filthy, and constant noise from the bar upstairs throughout the night that made sleep impossible. I highly recommend staying elsewhere!!! Seriously overpriced and unimpressive.

The BackStage Hotel is situated on the Leidsegracht (Leidse canal), in the old city centre. A number of popular venues can be found just around the corner on the Leidseplein: Paradiso, Melkweg, Alto Jazz Club, Maloe Melo, Stadsschouwburg, Nieuwe De La Mar Theater (Reopening 2009) and Bourbon Street. The National Museum (Rijksmuseum), Casino and Van Gogh Museum are just a 5 minute walk away.
