We stayed here for one night just to experience a traditional ryokan. We
found it quite easily. Take the subway to Gojo station on the Karasuma
line and exit on the north side. The main street running north is
Karasuma Dori, running west is Gojo dori.. Walk to the west & head
north on the first little lane you come to. Toshiharu Ryokan is not
quite two small blocks up on the left. There is no sign in English but
it is the only charming looking traditional old house. The owners are

The Toshiharu Ryokan is a beautiful old building in a good central
location. Our hosts made us feel very welcome and did everything to
make our stay enjoyable. I would highly recommend the Japanese
breakfast. All of the facilities were very good and clean. We loved
our room overlooking the garden. We look to staying at the Toshiharu
in the future.
I booked for my brother's family who was visiting japan for the first time. They loved the traditional Japanese style, the attention to details, the Japanese style brakfast and the friendly family who owns the ryokan. The location is very central and easy to find.
Lovely traditional house with the family living upstairs. Rooms are
large and look out onto little courtyard gardens. Breakfast is great
whether you opt for Western or Japanese.
Very welcoming and serviceminded staff, excellent Food and beautiful decorative interior.
The location probably accounts for the availability when every other
ryokan in Kyoto was booked out. It is in a business district so there is
not much close by in the evening but it is near the subway and bus
routes so you can go to Gion or elsewhere to eat.
Owners spoke virtually no English so interaction was purely functional
but always pleasant. Duvets were too hot for summer.
