Staff were exceptionally nice and helpful; they were able to give us directions when we called, hopelessly lost. They greeted us warmly when we arrived with hot cups of tea and helped us to find a local restaurant. The next day, they offered to keep our luggage while we went sightseeing. If you are looking for a traditional ryokan experience, this is a great introduction. The traditional breakfast in the morning was also very good and well worth the value.
all reviews » The location is excellent, just 5+ mins walk from the main Kyoto station. Price is reasonable for the service and facilities. Rooms are clean and fully equipped. Staff served tea to us every day when we came back to the ryokan. They have a free cultural night event every night run by volunteer staff. They are so friendly and it was really nice learning about their lives in Kyoto, as well as pick up some origami/calligraphy writing. Highly recommended!. - Loved the friendly staff, especially Yoko and Kazu - delicious traditional Japanese breakfast - it was so good, we had it every day of our stay there - the Japanese bath was amazing and so relaxing - plus the atmosphere was perfect as you can reserve it just for yourselves to enjoy privately. Staff was very friendly, courteous and helpful. They organized some great activities for us to join in the evening and even a morning tour which was great (with Kazu!). We enjoyed our time there a lot. Facilities are great, amazingly clean and tidy. Japanese-Style room was very spacious. Very cosy, and impeccably warm service from the staff. Every time before we left, they would inquire about our itinerary and offer guide sheets or advice on how to enjoy the place, or reach it faster. Room a bit small but very budget price for royakan. toilet in each room with bathtub and shower facilities, friendly and english speaking staffs, walking distance from JR Kyoto Stn. I loved the atmosphere, the helpful staff, traditional-style japanese bedrooms and baths. Great location. The Onsen, breakfast, staff was super helpful, conveinent for train station. The personable service. A steady supply of hot tea and advice. Modern, good location, helpful staff. Breakfast was a little pricey, although the spread of food provided in the traditional breakfast was good. Would have it for a day just to try. Nothing that we didn't like at Ryokan Shimizu. It was difficult to adjust the water temperatures in the room bath. The television had no offerings for those who cannot understand Japanese. Despite looking like only a block or two from the station (which it is, to be fair!), it proved a tad trickier to find at first, so make sure you print a good map before going. Other than that, nothing at all to dislike, would recommend it. Quite difficult to get there. But asking and asking you'll be there. Being hurried out at 10am for room cleaning. Pay more for private bathroom, which also makes for a less authentic experience.
