great place in a traditional style (we took Japanese room). Though not on the budget side of price and breakfast is not included in the rate, it is worth every penny paid. Very kind and knowledgeable staff ready to help with any request, additional events organized every week such as caligraphy in house course, sake tasting and others. Very close to bus stop (round the corner, max 100 m) and with a good connection to the Kyoto train station (about 5 mins by bus), in centre of a very beautiful .
all reviews » Very nice hotel. Clean, quiet, elegant and comfortable. Unlike most of the hotels we've visited in Japan, it is rather spacious and with a touch for detail. The staff is very friendly and helpful and they speak english pretty well. In fact, while we were in Kyoto we lost our digital camera, when the police found it, the hotel emailed us. By the time we received the email we were back in our country and the hotel people(?) proved to be most helpful, filling all the paperwork and communicating wi. It was a modern facility with traditional Japanese style and atmosphere for the foreign visitor to Kyoto and Japan. The staff spoke English, and the lobby was full of foreign (not Japanese) visitors, many of them spoke English. They offer a traditional Japanese breakfast, but you could switch it out for toast and coffee I you prefer. Unlike traditional Japanese Ryokan, where they include a traditional fancy Japanese dinner served in your room (you pay for this with an increased room cost, no . This ryokan does not offer a true ryokan experience, however this may be fine for foreign people. For Japanese people, it feels fake. The only thing I would add to the room would be some hooks on the wall, by the bathroom for yukatas or clothes, and by the door for coats. The closet was very small, so a little more space to hang things would be useful. The optional breakfast (continental or Japanese) lacks a little bit of variety and quantity for western stomachs... No onsen (Japanese spring bath) in the premises... And no foreign tv channels in the rooms, but nothing really important really... Laundry area was a bit gloomy and felt unclean (unlike the rest of the property that is extremely clean). Not enough selection for breakfast (even Japanese breakfast; only one set). Considering the premium rates of the ryokan, it was quite surprising to be told that bathrobes (Yukata) and bedsheets would only be changed every two days. Our room had a musty odour possibly related to problems with the toilet which seemed partially blocked and didn't seem to improve despite attention from the staff. Our children's room was fine, western style and a little bigger. Our room was very bright from 5am, would have benefitted from better screening. Our kids room had better blinds and cut out the sun effectively. The location is not optimal (a little far from the "center" of Kyoto), but the buses 9 and 28 are just 100m away. No tea ceremony despite being advertised as a tea ceremony room. It's not really easy to find the hotel if you are first time to visit kyoto.
