I'd never stayed at The Athenaeum before but I will be back. Although I booked a standard double at a very deep discounted rate (typically this means getting the box room next to the staff quarters), I was given an apartment room which was really a suite. It was excellent and I cannot commend it highly enough. Excellent value for money. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The room service was prompt and the rooms were very clean.The hotel is very conviniently located. I would not hesitate to come back in the future.

The initial reception member of staff was cold and unwelcoming, though the porter and all other staff were fantastic. A deposite was levied without our knowledge and this was rather confusing.Room did feel alttle stuffy at one point. I found the table manners of some of the other guests quite revolting. The first morning I had breakfast in the dinning room was quite awful, I couldnt eat my breakfast because of it. There was no escaping this awful exhibition as I was sat facing these awful people. The price for breakfast is too high. But near the hotel this is MandS shop with very nice and healthy food and drinks at reasonable price. fire alarm. price of breakfast at 27 pounds a bit over the top. The bar was not strictly a bar.room was very noisy. you could hear people in next room and corridor easily. Breakfast buffet in restaurant is not priceworthy. The fact that my mini bar was not replaced after the first night of mytwo night stay. The standard room looked worse than a good ibis or novatel. Not 5-star material.The picture on the internet is nothing like the room in reality. Theroom is actually a miniature model of what they say it is on thewebsite - if you like sleeping in broom cupboards, then this is thehotel for you!.
