What people say
All our stay was perfect. The bedroom was just like the one in the
pictures. Very clean and comfy. Great double bed. Perfect with
tea/coffee/chocolate facilities in the room. Double glass
window. Dark and thick curtain to get the room dark at night. We had
view over York Place (and the road works) but it was not a problem as
they did not work at night, so it was pleasant to sleep. The road
workers arrived around 7.30 in the morning but we were already preparing
us for breakfast (monday to frida. all reviews »
The Elder York Guest House is a lovely place to stay in Edinburgh! The location is excellent, walking distance to all attractions. There are road works going on, but these won't interrupt your stay and should be over soon. We were greeted on arrival in a friendly way and shown our very clean and spacious room, with bathroom ensuite. Our host offered an excellent recommendation for a pub for dinner. The morning breakfast is very hearty and very delicious and the breakfast room is very prett.
This B&B is located next to the main bus & coach depot and just a five minute walk from the train station and Princess Street. The breakfast was indeed a full breakfast; not with options of beans OR tomatoes, mushrooms OR whatever etc; you get the full works!! ...and you're kept topped up with endless tea / coffee & toast!
All staff were friendly & polite. The room was very clean with tea / coffee & biscuits supplied, and yes, you can turn the radiator on when YOU want!

We reserved early departure tour from Edinburg, to prepare breakfast for us, the lady came earlier than usual at weekend. We appreciated it very much. The House owner was also very nice and helpful, carried luggage for us. The room was clean and confortable. The location was excellent, convenient to city sightseeing and many places.
we were more than satisfied to stay here. Every thing was perfect, i will recommend this place to my friends.
The owner (Harry), his wife (Shirley), and Monica, their staff, were all friendly & helpful in their suggestions of what to do. Daily breakfast was good, location was fantastic, so conveniently located near Train & Bus Stations, & the famous Princess Street. And the guided walking tour that Harry suggested is a must-do. Great way to learn so much of the history of Scotland. I would stay there if ever in Edinburgh again.
Location is great - very central. Harry and Shirley are excellent hosts with a friendly and welcoming manner, plus a good knowledge of the area and tourist information. Breakfasts are excellent quality.
Room was small, but very cosy and had a skylight.
It is heritage-listed so be prepared for climbing a lot of steps. We loved this place and recommend it for a stay in Edinburgh.
We liked the people who run the place who looked after us very well. The food was great and the accommodation was very good. Harry was very helpfull to us by assisting with our luggage which was really appreciated. His lovely wife was very accommodating at breakfast and could do no more to please us. I would not hesitate to return to Elder York Guest House.
What's not to like here (don't moan about the stairs, they do tell you!) Staff very welcoming & helpful. Location is excellent. Now has free WiFi. Good sized room & very comfortable. Breakfast cooked to order, not like the mass produced buffets at some multi-nationals. Excellent fayre and sets you up for the day. Would recommend the Elder York.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Elder York Guest House. First of all because of its perfect location right in the center of Edinburgh, only a 5 minute walk from Waverly station. Secondly because Harry, Shirley and their staff were very friendly, considerate and genereous hosts. The breakfast was delicious and our room was comfortable and clean.
--Elder Guest B&B was a nice spot to stay. The dining room charming and breakfast good. It was centrally located to historic Edinburgh and Bus terminal 5 minutes away
--Our time in Edinburgh was fascinating, taking in the sights of the Royal Mile, engaging in a historic walking tour and of course a visit and tour of Edinburgh castle.
From getting there the staff were brilliant. They were very welcoming and nothing was too much trouble.
The rooms were all pristine and looked almost new.
The breakfast was delicious - just what we needed after a big night out.
We would definitely stay here again if we came back to Edinburgh and will be recommending to others.
Staff members were welcoming and, because we had heavy suitcases and there was no elevator, they offered without hesitation to help us with our bags. The room was spacious and clean and so, too, was the bathroom. Comfortable beds, good breakfast buffet in addition to the option of getting a freshly cooked breakfast.
Great location, beside the bus station a few minutes walk to the Playhouse and the centre of Edinburgh. Staff very helpful kept our luggage for us on the day we were leaving we were able to pick it up in the afternoon on our way to the bus station. Breakfast was very nice would certainly be happy to stay again.
The hotel was very clean, friendly and comfortable. The breakfast was excellent. The owners were more than helpful, letting me book in early and leave my bags until nearer the time of the bus for leaving. It was perfectly situated near the shops, cinema, theatre and all tourists facilities.
absolutely everything and would definately use again
in edinburgh by bus for a show at the playhouse and couldn't have chosen better for value,(fab breakfast and hosts) facilities and location.
also fact that husband smoked less as he couldn't be bothered going up and down all the stairs!!.
Wonderful staff, bery friendly, helpful and always on hand. Breakfast
allowed the opportunity to enjoy a true Scottish breakfast... Yum! The
room was clean, welcoming and comfortable. Great location, right in the
centre and neighbouring a shopping mall. Fantastic B&B!.
Harry ( the owner) is very friendly and welcoming, he takes care of your needs and makes you feel like home. The house looks from the outside a bit poor but it´s absolutely charming inside. I love it, and I´ll definitely will stay there again when Im in Edinburgh.
Great place to stay the staff were very polite and helpful. The room was nice and comfortable and the breakfast was outstanding. Location of the guest house was ideal for all sights a 10 min walk from waverley station or 2 minutes from the bus station.
Everything. Closeness to CBD and Waverley Train Station. Breakfast and wifi included. Cleanliness of facilities, professional staff who were very polite, friendly and very helpful. Would definitely stay here again and recommend to fellow travellers.
Breakfast is fantastic. The staff are very nice and helpful. The location is excellent! Just less than 5 min walk from the Waverley Station, and next to the Royal Mile. Very pleasant experience, this is definitely my first choice if coming back again!.
Good choice for breakfast, served quickly and tasted amazing! Rooms were immaculate and the staff were very polite. Additionally, it is just down the road from the shopping centre and a 2 minute walk to all other shops - very well positioned!.
Harry and the team were fantastic. Very friendly and accommodating. Harry even washed and folded my clothes for me after I couldn't find a laundromat! Brilliant service and much appreciated as a solo traveller. Great breakfast options too!.
Very friendly and helpful people. Excellent breakfast.
Spacious room and good bed
Perfect position near everything in town.
Wifi internet
Quiet location despite being so central. Will definitely use again next time we are in Edinburgh.
The owners and staff were extremely friendly and very helpful, particularly as my wife unfortunately was ill during part of our stay. I would wholeheartedly recommend the Elder York Guest House. Extremely satisfied in all respects.
Great location close to train terminal but not too close! Edinburgh sites within easy walking distance. Really friendly and attentive owners. Wonderful breakfast, clean, comfortable room. Edinburgh is a terrific city to visit.
this guest house is central for most things when traveling
30 seconds from the bus station
5minutes from the railway station
also not to far from the airport
the edinburgh play house is only a 5minute walk
great breakfast.
Very comfortable B&B with great food. Nothing was to much trouble for the owner.Very near the shops and buses and also Princess st was only about a 5 mins walk and Waverley station was less than a ten minute walk away.
our seconed visit here and loved it. the staff were very friendly . lovely comfartable room and great breakfast. will definately be back and recommend it to family and friends . also very central for playhouse and shops ,.
The hotel is very central, close to main line station and bus station but quiet. The manager was very friendly and helpful. He looked after our luggage all day on the day we left. The breakfast was well cooked.
I love how the owner took care of us. They adviced us about what to do and maked sure that we are okay. The hotel also close to the bus station, good lacation. Not that far from the old city in Edinburgh.
Breakfast was very good, very nice dinning room, the owners were very friendly and helpfull and very knowledgeable of the things to do in the city.
Good central location to the train and bus station.
I had a fabulous time there. The location is terrific and so close to great food and bars! Thoroughly recommend this place. Harry and his son were very helpful. I hope I get back ther one day!.
My friend and I liked all the facilities at the Elder York Guest House and found the
staff extremely friendly.
Breakfast was delicious and nothing was too much trouble for the hardworking staff.
The staff were friendly and helpful at all times. The accommodation was very clean and tidy. The location was fantastic in the centre of Edinburgh handy for sightseeing, Theatre and shopping.
I came primarily for the Rugby game, so my time at the hotel was just overnight but, liked everything, good location, friendly welcome, spotless room and great breakfast at a reasonable price.
All the staff very friendly and helpful. Extra help given in our going out days ie best ways to travel and clear directions given. Would stay there again and recommend to friends.
The location as good and we could walk to all the things we wanted to see. Shirley and Harry were warm and friendly with lots of good information. The breakfasts were wonderful.
The location was great. The rooms were comfortable and warm. The break fast was splendid with a great vegetatian Option and the Staff Were really warm and friendly.
Very friendly and professional staff and owners. Great location. Lovely breakfast. Very good value. Clean, smart and comfortable rooms. Will certainly stay again!.
Good place to stay but make sure you have help with your luggage to climb the 67 steps to get to the Hotel.
Breakfast was great as was the service, nice people.
The staff were excellent especially the friendly receptionist who was also serving breakfast. Our breakfast was well cooked and delicious. Everywhere was clean.
The staff were extremely friendly, the rooms were clean and tidy.
The breakfast was absolutely delicious, so much to chose from. I would definitely stay again.
The room was incredibly comfortable and the staff was eager to show us the highlights of the area and provide suggestions for things to do and places to go.
On our arrival at the hotel the owner's made us feel very welcome . Very helpful. Being able to leave our luggage on check out day completed a lovely stay.
We appreciate company's very professional, reliable and customer friendly approach. We would definitely will be using your services again when needed.
Shirley and Harry were very inviting from the moment we walked in the door. Rooms were well furnished, comfortable and had a good view of the street.
breakfast was beautiful and made to order room was clean and tidy very central and not far to walk from the railway station staff were very helpful.
Breakfast was amazing and set us all up for a day in Edinburgh. Bed was really comfy, would def stay here again as its handy for city centre.
It was very clean, cozy and comfortable.Harry was very helpful. Breakfast was delicious. Location is great, right next to the bus station.
Very central location, good value, comfortable and very clean room.Left early so sadly did not have the breakfast...menu looked very good.
Nothing to complain about.
A little more water flow in the shower would have been appreciated.
I honestly can't fault it (and I can complain when the occasion arises).
Even found a place to park free over the weekend just a five minute walk away.
Thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will definately stay here again.
Just be prepared to walk up a few flights of stairs with your luggage, but it's not a big deterrent.
Lack of parking but this is only a minor issue - more than made up for by the location.
A little bit of road work was present which prevented easy access to the property but it was worth it. The proprietors were very keen to lessen the impact by providing assistance.
Due to the numerous stairs this guest house is less suitable for elderly people (or generally those who mind something like that). We actually didn't really care. Once the luggage was upstairs it was like a nice little work out every day. As said among the pros, the rooms are generally very clean, but some minor renovations in the not too distant future couldn't hurt (e.g. our bathroom).
There was upgrade of street infrastructure outside our windows(no fault of B&B owner).
Can't find anything negative to say about it.
Nothing.
Nothing.
nothing.very pleased.
Can not think of anything. My stay was simply wonderful.
N/A.
Could be perfect if there is a lift. Too many stairs.
Very slight minus for rather half-hearted shower in room 9. But to be fair we are used to super efficient Norwegian showers! Rather a lot of stairs especially with luggage. Though hosts very helpful with luggage carrying.
The accomodation is on the second floor, and unfortunately the hotel does not have any lift. This may be a problem with anyone with mobility issues.
Bathroom size limited but that's just a consequence of the building layout and not an issue for a two or three night stay.
the bed could be a bit more comy
but that is only a minor moan
not for people who cant climb stairs as there are 2flights to climb.
The steps up to the reception will be hard work for anyone not good on their legs .
You have to go up two flights of stairs before arriving and we had another flight to go up to our room but we did know this before booking. The fresh fruit was not replenished at breakfast, so if you were not the first down there was not much left. The basin in the bathroom was new and modern but the plug did not close.
The ceiling in the room was a little low and the room not large, but it was perfectly fine for our needs,as we had only 1 night in Edinburgh, and had a big day sight seeing, all we wanted to do was rest.
My wife did not like to number of stairs involved. There were far more than we anticipated.
The Rates Were a bit high and the shower could do with more pressure.
Nothing.
Needed help to get up the many stairs with luggage on arrival but no one was there who could help. Going home owner helped which was great.
The room was a little dated and the window didn't close properly but it didn't matter as we were on a high floor.
None.
the room was very small big enough for an overnight stay but i wouldnt have stayed there for a whole week felt like i was in a matchbox.
Just a lot of stairs up to reception, probably not suitable for elderly people.
