The staff were exceptional, particularly the reception staff and the concierge. I thoroughly enjoyed the variety of artwork on display, including the motorbikes - some pieces were outstanding. Being in the heart of the city was a huge plus for exploring on foot. The balcony was a great surprise that I wasn't expecting. My bed was very comfortable. I had a great night's sleep. The staff welcomed us and went out of their way to accommodate our wishes, including offering us complementary tickets to an art event. The 11am check out was great after a late night. An all over great experience. Loved the Art but although I got the catalogue held at the desk found it hard to identify the pictures. Suggest you have numbers on discs alongside which could be shifted when you change them around. The pool and fitness area is great. Great location, friendly staff, Hippopotamus restaurant was amazing. We were travelling in our classic car and they provided secure, undercover parking right outside the main door for $20 per day.. Would stay here again for sure. Ambience, charm and natural ness of the people - an undiscovered gem for a local. I stayed the night before an overseas trip to wind down and repack! Honestly - the carpet in my room was stained and in need of a good clean. Although the room was well appointed it lacked the personal touch that I would expect from an hotel of this standing. The only thing is that the shower door tended to sit open a fraction spilling water onto the floor of the bathroom. The room menu is too dear for most people. My husband has difficulty walking so we really needed it but refused to pay those prices for food we did not really want. Have you thought of also having a café with light food in the hotel as many good hotels do?. I thought the restaurant was a little overrated. Show seats were too far back to see detail of costumes. Wellington weather- gale force winds. At least the airport remained open. A second restaurant for quick casual meals would be great Obviously there are lots of options near by but that does not help the hotel. Restaurant bar staff were not very attentive. When we went in for a nightcap we went to the bar but given drinks menus and ushered to sit down. Then we were ignored. After 15 minutes we left. Nobody even acknowledged us. Bit strange for such a world renown restaurant. Mmmm. The lighting in the room was a bit dull to do any work or read unless you sat directly under one of the lamps - not a biggy but you asked. The queen room with harbour view was getting a bit tired. Mini bar was not refilled during my stay. I ordered a fish and chips meal, the fish arrived but I had to call the kitchen for them to deliver the chips as they had been forgotten. As a result my fish then got cold. I found hairs in the sink on my arrival and the wardrobe was extremely dusty. The room was well appointed but extra charges such as wi-fi, parking and a credit card surcharge are a bit 20th Century. didn't have sky sport 3 so couldn't watch the ashes. The room was a lot smaller than I anticipated & the bathroom was a little dated with damages to the shower taps. I had expected a slightly nicer room for the amount of money I was being charged when I compare it to some of the other hotels in Wellington I've stayed in. Would prefer to stay in a room on the the apartment side of the hotel next time as I've stayed in these rooms before and they are a lot nicer. Not much - room service breakfast far too large portions (for Americans!) - coffee only warm and no spoon or eggcups for soft boiled eggs. The linen wasn't very luxury Couldn't open windows No balcony. No toothpaste on toilets. Not long enough !. Slow internet connection. Stay was not long enough. Breakfast didnt arrive on time despite 3 phone calls, key to the room very difficult to open room, had to ring for help. When checking in staff pointed vaguely in dirction of the room , I took wrong set of lifts. Booked thru this site, conference had room discount but this had not been registered with hotel. If I hadnt taken the paperwork with me the staff wouldnt have believed me. Very disappointed in the service. Plug in wash basin broken. Staff advised on Friday - no response by the time we left on MSunday. The closing of the pool at 11pm. Having to wait to pick up car. No one at counter. Shampoo and soap from previous guest had been left in the shower. Limited room service menu.I travel globally continuously on business and I no longer expect to have pay for internet. Even when it is listed as chargeable on the site it's almost always waived as a standard. Not at this hotel, nor most others in the city. Wellington needs to move with the times here. Didn't like having to pay $20 to park my car. Shower was cold and no pressure. Rooms and surroundings a bit dated and dowdy. Was noisy at times. The room was a little small!. The room was small and housekeeping didnt come the second day. Too expensive for what is delivered particularly the food, average staff not being particularly friendly or welcoming. My room keys were given to my guest staying with me, not me even tho my name was on the room not hers, check in was supposed to be 3pm, room not ready till 4pm. Got charged $200 for a noise complaint, was never approached by any staff to warn us. Marcina was denied access to the room as she forgot her key card and her name wasnt on the room even tho the cards were issued to her in the first place. My credit card was charged even tho I asked to pay via Eftpos.

From State Highway 1:
From Auckland/Taupo/Levin, take Aotea Quay exit as you approach the city (1st exit into the city). Keep driving for approximately 2km on Waterloo Quay which becomes Jervois Quay, which becomes Cable Street, Museum Hotel is a prominent building on the right hand side of the road opposite Te Papa Tongarewa, NZ national museum.
