This ryokan was recommended by our nephew who studying in Tokyo. The location is within walking distance from Metro Train exit (further away from the main Ikebukuro station) which is in front of Excelsior Cafe. We arrived early in the morning after talking an overnight bus trip from Nagoya hoping to drop our backpack in the hotel but the "mini hotel counter" was unmanned; Typical budget hotel which not manned 24- hour. They allowed my friend and I to do our laundry within the hotel, because there were no places close by that would allow us to do so. It was very kind of them to allow us that luxury. But it is ok as we only back to the hotel at night after coming back from Tokyo Disney. The surrounding is not as clean as Tokyo should be. The room, for what it was worth, was rather small. I was expecting a larger room for my money, and the location (just finding the hotel via taxi) was a little difficult. You really had to be on the lookout to see the sign or building for it. Other than that, though, the stay was very enjoyable. - stairs from the road to the 1st floor made it difficult to bring luggages into the apartment - bathroom is extremely small. - bed covers were rather old. - room slippers looked dirty and unusable. - wifi had little to no reach in our room. - couldn't put luggage under the bed resulted in very little walking space. - housekeeping kept issuing only 2 towels instead of the 3 we require for the number of people paying for the room. we have to climb up a stairs to go to the reception. A bit hard if we have a heavy luggage. slow wifi connection. Rooms are so close to each other and any voice can be heard from next door. the jug kettle and plugs should be added. Only one and there were 3 of us charging our cameras and phone. Payment by credit card is 5% more than with cash. External callers could not reach me on the phone in the room. Location is not so easy to find. (Better print a map). A fire accident occurs which made the air-conditioning system broke down. Other aspect is excellent with this price. The Hanamiya Ryokan signboard is not easily seen, so it takes time to recognize the building even though we are standing next to it. limited space in room,. There is no one speak English. If you pay by credit card they charge an additional 5%. There is no person at the reception for 24 hours and the hotel doors are wide open. There is no really baggage storage. They provide towels but we found other persons hair in it. Not so clean. And feeling of comfort suffers from it. -No questions about it, place had a grubby feel to it. Not a great place to stay if you are finicky about cleanliness. -staff were almost impossible to find. Half the time they never seemed to be at the front desk. Be careful when checking in very early. Expect no one at front desk - may also be the reason why whole fee needs to be paid upfront. The triple room and the bathroom were very small, but the staff changed towels every day and it was clean enough. The staff didn't speak English, but they tried to help us as they could. I think the room it self is not as clean as the other hotel I stayed in Japan. And they don't ask identity for stay which I found a little bit unsafe. Paid for triple room and thought we'd get that but got small room with two beds, a single and a double. Explained expectation to manager and he was polite but said they have no triple bed rooms. So had to share narrow double bed with teenage child. We managed and made it fun but not as expected. The cleaning is not thorough. Everything in our room smelled of cigarette smoke. Saturated. Small rooms, airconditioning place directly above bed. the bed were too hard but it wasn't a major problem as the other facilities were great. Dusty. Poor WiFi signal. Room and bed look not so clean. No one was at the reception desk when we arrived at the hotel and no one answered when we rung the bell on the desk or called the hotel (to see if staff might pick up the phone elsewhere in the building). We had to wait 20 minutes, quite nervously because it was evening already, before someone came to check us in. Room was fairly clean but didn't feel that way so comfort wasn't high. Hotel is a walkable but not very close distance from the station. I went there last years and it was great but thiis year it was really dirty. Too expensive. totally inexperienced concierge. We order non-smoking room and the smell of this room was disgusting, really expensive for the room that we had, our room was underground making feeling us sleeping in a rubbish room.
