This was a great boutique hotel to stay in, don't let the tavern entrance scare you when checking in as the staff are friendly and helpful. Breakfast was provided, continental but all very fresh and good quality not like some other dodgy ones that I've had in some big chains. Very close to one of the main pedestrian shopping streets, so pack an empty bag. Also very walkable to all the chocolatiers, royal palace & town hall etc The rooms on the first floor are very nicely decorated and space.
all reviews » Though it is a small hotel with around 13 rooms it is very cosy. The hotel is built around 1930s and thus creates a very lovely atmosphere, with original reception and bar interior still intact. It has good location in the city center (close to both metro and tram), big and spacious bed, proper shower. Breakfast was allright. Staff was very friendly and helpful. - Staff was really kind - my room was clean with a nice view - it is located at cental Brussels, just 5~10 minutes from Grand Palace. On the way between GP and the hotel, there are lots of stores of clothes and foods, so that distraction made me feel walking distance was closer than actual. - The hotel's ambience was also very good. Reception is very "artdeco". Due to the heavy luggages, Salem Hotel GM recommended us to stay at 1st floor the 19th century room. We are pleased to accept the offer. Everything goes smoothly includes the breakfast. Salem can converst good English and assist us in every way possible about Brussels. This is a lovely small hotel in a very central location in Brussels.Salem the manager is most helpful and friendly. It is a real find and beats the sameness of a larger hotel. Some people would complain there is no lift, but this was not a problem for us. Hotel Esperance is really a nice hotel just minutes away from the main shopping center. Fabulous art deco taverne on ground floor, worth visiting alone, lovely spacious room, well equipped, nice bathroom and good shower. The Esperance Tavern where breakfast is served is really an amazing place and the price is a real bargain. It was OK. The most important issue for me was the location and internet, so it went well. The guy at the reception was a bit slow, but also within the limits of acceptable. All the rest was fine. I liked it. Architecture, museums, restaurants, beer. Bruxellois know how to enjoy - young and old. Extremely nice people and very helpful. Hope to go again soon in spite of minor quibbles. There's is no lift in the hotel, as like many small other boutique places in old buildings, so be prepared to climb a steep set of stairs on arrival and pack light. Besides that everything was great. Few post offices and public toilets. - We stayed in the triple room on the top floor so 6 flights of stairs. There is no lift. - Quite noisy, near the main road could hear police cars and fire engines all night, take ear plugs. - The shower room does not have a door, just half a wall and the loo is a cupboard. No lift in this hotel unfortunately. So not good for the disabled or elderly. We loved everything, just if you can not do stairs, ask for a room on a lower floor as there aren't any lifts. Could hear doors being slammed by other guests, noise from the room above - take earplugs if a light sleeper!. Looks like it is in a back street isn't really and this has the advantage of being very quiet. The breakfast choices were limited considering the price. Had to walk up four flights - no lifts - probably good for our fitness!. Narrow stairs and hallway but its not really a big deal.. Consider it as an exercise walking up and down as there's No lift... ;). The place of breakfast was a bit uncomfortable. I heard the bell rang a lot. Bar was often crowded with tourists coming to check art deco. I cannot say one thing bad about it. No comment!. No coffee/tea making facilities in the room. To use the bar fridge in the room one has to get a key from reception. No complaints at all. In hot weather the room got very hot as there is no air conditioning. You are able to open the windows but from 7 am the bells from the neighbouring church chime. There was nothing I disliked. The glass wall on the shower overlooking the room is a little bit strange for a room for three people. A double room with extra bed is not too convinient. - bedding was dirty because staff puts it on the floor in the corridor - uncomfortable for staying longer than weekend because in the room there were no wardrobe - only shelfs - none English channel on TV like BBC, CNN, MTV (only local canals for national citizens) - panorama of the roofs by the window - problem if you are planning to stay in the hotel over day - lack of the lift - might be a problem if you have heavy luggages. Very thin walls, we could hear everything from the nearby rooms, walking, talking - everything! No elevator - that was ok for us, but for some people this could be a problem. Walking up 5 flights of stairs with your luggage...tolerable for young people but would make it difficult for older folks. The shower while gorgeous splattered all over the bathroom, and the room was quite stuffy, requiring us to open our doors, but then the insects flew in. Still an enjoyable stay overall. No elevator. Steep stairs to reach a 4th floor. getting there by car, and parking, is not easy. room door lock was difficult and got stuck. Stairs may be a little steep for some people. No lift. No air conditioning in rooms, very hot in summer. No elevator, but the staff helps changing the room if there is available room at the first floor. Weren't told about the stairs until we got to the hotel, no elevator, very difficult to find with a GPS. Would like full length mirror, fluffier towels and a towel rail but all minor. Nothing at all, it was a perfect stay. It is a 5 floors hotel without an elevator.
