A real 5-star experience. The hotel excels at every opportunity. Staff are courteous and friendly. The building is amazing, the decor very pleasing. Our room was huge with everything we could need. So glad we chose to dine in the restaurant and relax after dinner in the Whisky Room where service and selection were excellent. The spa facilities were perfect, a very relaxing environment. Although the car parking was expensive it definately made things easy during our stay. York is a wonderful pla.

Birthday.......We could not have chosen better!We enjoyed the Jacuzzi and pool together,had lovely cocktails in the bar,followed by a delicious dinner in the elegant dining room.All the staff made our stay extra special.......In the morning I was able to make a cafetiere of fresh coffee,this was much appreciated,a fiv. Fantastic service from even before check in. Staff were accommodaring, super friendly and really helpful! All 3 rooms we stayed in were to a high quality, beds were comfortable and bathrooms clean, special and very well equipped. We lived the little touches like cafetiere and real coffee, speciality teas, tasty biscuits in the complementay tea tray and girgeous Molton brown products too! Spa was outstanding, well heated and spacious with such a luxurious and relaxing feel. Would recommend this. We loved the building and location, the facilities are first class. The bars and lounges are very comfortable, luxurious and welcoming. The spa is very clean and enjoyable. All the staff were very helpful and friendly and couldn't do enough for us!! Really is a 5-star hotel, it's the little touches that make it and the hotel and staff had plenty of them. Stayed for 1 night, was perfect to just stroll over the bridge into the city. Ideally located between the river and the train station. Excellent - refined and yet friendly , best possible service without being intrusive . We had a large party for drinks and we took a picture before getting in to the taxi's and left a box behind by accident. We got to the restaurant and the hotel had phoned and a member of staff walked across town to bring it to us, without asking...just did it...and graciously. Wonderful refined but friendly atmosphere in the hotel...and we've stayed in many 5 stars. The parking service was excellent, we tried to park ourselves, but couldn't find anything near the hotel. Nice wide corridors, entrance area not cramped, in my case large bedroom with top notch furnishings. location is approx 7-10 mins from the heart of York. No need for taxi costs etc. the staff were very friendly, the facilities fantastic. A pleasure to stay here........ history of the building. Aim to retain its architectural features. Space and opulence. The spa, pool etc. Bathrooms. Comfortable beds. Top class service from approachable, friendly staff. Going home. When ordering twin beds they should be completely separate,and not made up as if a double. The only thing I would mention is that in the spa area it would have been nice to have some magazines/newspapers and lounging beds to add to the relaxation. After leaving the spa I did notice on some literature that there is supposed to be a "relaxation lounge" but we didn't see it?!. Struggle to think!! Breakfast was not included but this was known at the time of booking. too short...want to come stay more than just overnight! :). Room wasn't ready when we arrived - the hotel said they would call when the room was ready, but they didn't call. We went back and it was ready - we were tired and would have liked to get into the room sooner. The only thing I didn't like is a minor niggle. The laminated wooden doors in the pool area of the Spa all showed clear evidence of water damage. This wrong choice of materials can easily be rectified. Nothing. Spa could have had loungers but understand that actually this could have added to stress as people tend to reserve and you could never had enough. Roadworks outside a bit annoying but not hotel's fault Wedding party bit noisy. We were over the service areas- a bit noisy in the early morning. The pool area and changing rooms were rather grimy- very wet and slippy. The pool was tired and needs upgrading. We would have liked breakfast- for us this gives us a relaxing start to the day and improves our sense of being part of the hotel but we felt we had paid enough money and wonder why they don't just charge a little more and include it. paying extra for carparking. Not much not to like. Perhaps the room could have done with being a bit warmer but that's getting picky. Reception staff were a bit stuffy! Someone should tell them they are allowed to smile, laugh and still maintain a professional efficient front. Spa pool out of use due to high chlorine levels which i believe is an ongoing issue (according to the hotel members)..parking is very expensive so i would suggest drop luggage off then go park. We had a problem with odours in our initial room - the fault was reported on the first morning but the maintenance team didn't resolve the problem during the day - to the hotel's credit we were given a superior room for the second night - considering this is a 5* hotel I would have expected the maintenance team to have resolved the issue during the day?. Rooms tastefully decorated, however curtains did not offer complete block out and corridor lights shined brightly under the door. The bathroom was also tastefully decorated with separate bath and shower, however the heated towel rail was so close to the shower door that you had to be careful not to burn your arm, which I did on one occasion. Was slightly disappointed at the executive room, we were in the attic ( 5th floor) so couldn't easily see out of the window. Would recommend asking for sleep mask (readily supplied) as curtains didn't close properly due to window design in the eaves. Shower - power not great..all in all, nothing major to moan about. The spa was poor, such a disappointment yes it had a pool, jacuzzi & sauna, but no areas to relax, no proper seating,it was so very small, you couldn't stay long really unless you were having treatments but these were so expensive. This was the only time we met an unfriendly member of staff, he was so miserable & unhelpful. Dining in restaurant was very expensive with poor choice and lethargic service. Bar ran out of some wines in lower price ranges. For the cost of two nights it would've been fantastic if it included breakfast. Only thing I found disconcerting/offputting was whether the doormen were expecting a tip. Our room was on the ground floor, two doors down from reception, and we would happily have wheeled our bags ourselves (maybe 15 metres; after all, we'd walked from the train station), but they leapt to it - then hung around in the room when really we just wanted to flop. n/a. Poor choice in grill room, very limited menu. Noise of roadworks outside which had been going on six months but we were not warned about when we booked, and I specifically asked for a quiet room. Nothing. Nothing, you would have to be exeptionaly picky to find something to your distaste, drinks in the lounge were expensive but you would expect that. There was nothing to dislike. Access to the Hotel. Apparently the council have paved the entrance to the road. Therefore a stranger does not realise they have to drive over the 'pavement'!! I did 3 laps of the area before phoning the hotel for 'How do I get to the front door'. nothing at all. Very small point. We had a huge twin room, but only had 2'6" beds. The room was large enough to cope with much bigger beds, though they were very comfortable. Being charged for an item from the mini bar when we did not take anything from the mini bar. Nothing at all.
