very central and easy to find, staff were friendly and helpful, food next door was beautiful, room was clean but basic. I have stayed in Amsterdam a few times and I would definately stay there again. All the staff including the receptionist have been very nice and helpful through our stay at the France Hotel. location. Due to our short-term booking they "had" to upgrate us to a better room.

The hotel is located at very good location.the hotel was surprisingly very clean and new towels supplied daily. location is also ideally close to most sites in amsterdam and walking distance to central train station. location was brilliant, you couldn't get much closer to all the action, but as hotel was down an small side street it was still quite.good location in the center of Amsterdam, walking 2 min. from central station, not expensive. Free wifi, which worked!. close to the train station, close to everything, but not in the middle where everything is loud. The delightful receptionist I think she is of australian origin - verypleasant and helpful. Our window looked out into a service shaft no daylight in the room.No indoor slippers given. at times we had to wait a while before someone came to reception. Toilet bowl (smelly) and corridor which is smelly (smoking). For a breakfast it is necessary to go to the outdoor cafe.That is not so convenient.The reception area is somewhat grotty and uninviting. The stairs doesn't feel safe underfoot and the stairwell isn't clean. On Tuesday, June 03, 2008 the rooms were twice the price as what they were the previous night. I wonder why this was the case.... It was not on a street that allowed us to park outside to unloadbaggage from car.My room was very small. Would have liked coffee making facilites in the room.The room was too nosiy,the wall was to thin.The cleaning could be better. poor breakfast, heavy smell at corridors and bath, noisy, not safe. room was not clean enough, ie grubby marks on walls and floors not properly swept/mopped. the 'window' in the room was behing a cupboard and did not open, and looked into a service shaft. Broken door lock. The toilet was dirty. The bedding was marked. We did not stay for the second night booked. I booked a double room with one double bed, and they give me a twin room with no window. They didn't even excuse, not to talk about some kind of economic compensation.no that much clean for a 3 stars, expensive for this can of hotel. A room without daylight for this price is actually not acceptable.I was not happy that I e-mailed the hotel twice weeks before coming regarding payment and I did not get any reply to the e-mails. Also I was made to pay on arrival before I had even seen my room at the hotel instead of when I was leaving and this is not mentioned anywhere in the hotel description..I suggest people go to another hotel and not the France Hotel...............
