We are a mature couple who stayed at the Hotel Hirschen for three nights in early October 2013. We took the train from Bern to Zurich. Zurich station, like Bern and Luzern, is quite nice with street level platforms (or escalators), a Tourist Information Office, and lots of underground shopping. The hotel was about a third of a mile away, across the river, in the Old City--very convenient to attractions. We asked for a room off the square because Niederdorfstrasse can be noisy -- lots of res.
all reviews » The situation of the hotel, it was right in the old town and the variety of restaurants outstanding. Because it was in busy area due to shops and restaurants thought it was going to be noisy at night but that wasn't the case. Reception staff were very friendly and helpful and the breakfast choice very good. Easy walking distance to main station and the Zurich Lake. Ferries also very accessible. Very enjoyable stay. The staff were very friendly and all spoke excellent English. They helped us plan several trips and showed us everything on a map and pointed out which trams we should get. We loved the homemade Bircher Muesli at the breakfast bar. We loved the location as it was central for everything and close to all the bars, restaurants and shops. You get free drinks on arrival! There is a wine celler and roof terrace!. Fantastic location in the middle of the lively old town. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Room was charming and looked exactly as pictured. Excellent value for money as most surrounding hotels were much more expensive. Breakfast was very good. I would definitely stay there again. i like the location its best in the central. 5 minutes walk to the train station. restaurant,bar & shopping just around the corner. Our room did not have a bath which was disappointing. Drinks can be bought from Reception but 7.50 francs for a large bottle of water is a bit of a rip off! Our bedroom did not not quite look like some of the photos on the website and the bathroom needed a bit of tlc with paint peeling from the ceiling. However the positive does out weigh the negative and we would stay there again. I would describe the room furnishings and bathroom as basic, not luxury, though this is clearly reflected in the price of the room. the bathroom is very small whenever you take shower the water will wet the whole floor. Google maps was not helpful in finding the hotel from the train station. Better map on the hotel's web page would help. A bit pricey but Zurich is an incredibly high-priced city. The toilet was rather small although this has to be taken in the context that this is a small hotel. Everything was perfect at this hotel. No fridge or tea making facilities in the room, so if a cup of tea or coffee is needed, it costs €3.50 per cup. My quote for the room for two nights was €380 but when I checked out I was billed for €400. I am taking this up with letsbookhotel.com. No hairdryer in the room, wifi didnt work in the room, very small room, a bit stuffy, very basic. nothing. We both had pretty bad allergy attacks while at the hotel, which subsided when we moved to a different location (also in Zurich). We think this was due to the old age of the building (also a neat part about the building), but allergy sufferers should be aware. internet availability not as advertised; only could catch signal in the bathroom of room. The broken bed frame, missing cosmetic tissues in bathroom. Unprepossessing entrance, very small shower cubicle. As in that kind of hotel in Zurich down-town the wifi is free but so low. no dislikes. Small room but, in Europe most rooms are small. No WiFi signal in the room; I had to stand in the corridor by the stairs. Wifi internet was very poor. Room needed some cosmetic attention, (paint, update TV and stations available in English) Furniture was simplistic and too close to the bed. Danger of bumping into the nightstands in the middle of the night. WiFi is available in all areas and is free of charge???? There was no reception in my room on the fifth floor.No hairdryer.As we stayed only overnight- it was OK. everything is costly comparing with other European cities. The double bed was a bit uncomfortable for two very mature adults, but this wasn't a big drawback. bathroom was small and uncomfortable, room was very basic for that price. The wifi was not working in the room as by hotel description and one person of the staff wasn't really friendly when making her noticing that. The room was small and with IKEA furniture, for sure not romantic as described. Extremely hot, no aircon. Only a small fan. Room was VERY small and plain. The rooms, bare, spartan and not very comfortable. Knock onto the bed frame twice. Water from shower bath falls easily out and flood the both room. Door knob at lvl 8 almost broken. No kettle, room is small. wifi was non-functional.
