We stayed two nights in September 2013 at the Traders Hotel in Penang. The hotel is part of the Shangri-la group and used to be called the Shangri-la Inn. It’s not a brand new property but from what we could tell it is still in a very well-maintained condition. It has a spacious, agreeable classical hotel lobby with plenty of natural light and room to lounge and sit. all reviews » My husband and I have just returned from 6 days in Penang. We chose Traders as it was close to the bus terminal and shops which was very convenient. We never used taxis as the bus system there is exceelent so it's easy to get around the main sites by bus at very cheap prices. Even though the terminal was just next door, the rooms are very quiet and getting a great night sleep was easy. The room was modern, well maintained and very clean. Everything was perfect. The staff at reception went out o. I'll like to highlight the names of these staff for providing excellent service. Mr Kumar, the lounge manager who made sure my son and I had a very pleasant stay, he also arranged complimentary transport to the airport for the both of us which is much appreciated. A Mdm Ranjeet, a very pleasant staff, whom I meet at the lobby and who never fails to smile and ask if there is anything else she can do to make my stay at Traders even more comfortable. A Ms Yee Nee from the restaurant/ cafe who show. We stayed in a club room and this would be the best hotel in terms of service and facilities we have ever experienced beyond a doubt. Private check in, breakfast was exceptional and also included is 2 hours of canapes and drinks each night at the club bar looking out over the city and ocean. Staff all knew us, couldn't do enough to help us. The bed was the size of 2 double beds and was luxurious! They even picked up that it was my birthday and delivered me chocolates. As we stayed in a Traders Club room, our family enjoyed separate check in/out, use of Club Launge with tea and cookies throughout a day, breakfast and evening snacks- which is value for money as it's as good as dinner. Though the rooms are a bit more expensive, I highly recommend booking them instead of regular rooms, if you are going to have at least couple of drinks in the evening-that would save a lot! Staff is extremely polite and helpful, in fact staying in Traders was the best thing I lik. The buffet breakfast spread was very quite extensive. My kids 3 years old and 5 years old enjoyed it. The pool is small but well maintained and clean. There is a lifeguard stationed at the pool. We have booked the Executive Suite, however the hotel was fully booked and they upgraded us into a Speciality Suite. It was a pleasant surprise. The staff was very helpful. My son has a swimming incident and the attentive lifeguard swiftly helped him out from sinking in the deep pool. The location of the hotel. It is next to the bus terminal and a shopping mall (convenient for a late night movie). Penang street is also within walking distance. Great selection of food available during breakfast service. The normal rooms weren't ready so we were checked in into a room on the Traders Club floor which comes together with complimentary services such as breakfast at the Traders Lounge - limited buffet but excellent service by the staff/waiter. Great service, value for money, large room with a view, very comfortable. The shuttle service to Golden Sands is very nice to spend the day there and they will put food on your room number as well. My complains of water leakage from air cond was tended to immediately with follow up calls to check if everything was OK. To top it all, the hotel sent up a fruit basket to apologise. This is what I call customer service not seen in many parts of the world. I like the hotel , the staff are very friendly. They also have good facilities, we enjoyed swimming and my daughters enjoyed the SPA . The location is good because it is just next to shopping malls. We enjoyed the live band entertainment at the lobby too . Perfect location , walking distance to Georgetown. Shopping mall just few steps. The wait upon arrival due to non-availability of our room this despite arrival after the check-in time stipulated by the hotel (15:00 - we arrived at 17:30). A small matter but the showe curtains on the bathroom was very musty smelling. Not a thing, this place was exceptional, faultless and just perfect. The pool was closed for repair exactly during the days we were there(. Though they offered a free shuttle to a sister hotel at Batu Ferringi with a pool and a beach, we didn't use it- did not want to waste the weekend we planned to spend sightseening. Hotel residents have a tough time looking for car park spaces when there is a big function in the evening. Hotel must reserve some priority parking lots for residents who do not know where else to park their cars. Extremely inconvenient. Nothing - can you imagine?. The rice was cold. My table for breakfast on one of the days did not have salt and pepper and I had to request it. The hotel seems to be quite old. Some of the furnitures are obviously worn out. Nothing !. Cannot think of anything. Only one thing, the hotel was full and we were allocated a smoking room. Ensure you book a non smoking as the lingering aroma of cigarette smoke was pretty awful. None. The only problem I encountered was that the plug stuck and was difficult to use. Everything else was great. The food. I have been a guest at this hotel for more than 10 years and the food has lost its credibility. In terms of freshness, variety and taste. I also had a very unpleasant encounter with the guard at the car park exit booth. Indian lady. She alone put a dent in an otherwise very very pleasant stay. The slack dress of the people who stayed in the Traders Club. The bar prices are excessive by any international standards. The bathroom was smaller than would be preferred. The room was also a little smaller than expected. A bit pricey but not a rip off. I did not experience anything which was not to like on this visit. Although I was on the club floor, the check-in unfortunately took a while as there were late check-outs. Nothing not to like, pretty good overall. The hotel was priced highly - however we did book the night before hence paid a premium. - the only problem is that, i found the bathtub's on off turning valve was broken..... There were very noisy people hearing loud music in the room close to ours and making a very loud party in the room over ours until 3.30 a.m.. We didn't sleep until 4.00 a.m.. The staff did everything to change the situation. The general level of guests is low. Nothing, the hotel is scheduled for refurbishment, and is not the most modern in decor, but even so is very pleasant and comfortable. Traders Club lounge was especially nice. Rooms probably look old but they are still good. The water outlet at my room has bit of problem though. but nothing major. Room facilities was perhaps a little bit run-down and perhaps chambermaid could take note of what is inside the mini-bar as you could imagine a shock when you open up the fridge and find two rotten bananas. None. Nothing. (1) Mug in our room is not clean, oily. (2) As my room is just opposite the Club Lounge, during morning, moving the utensils by trolly has created significant noise disruption. Small room, checking in staff, discriminating booking from letsbookhotel.com (budget booking) hence giving us lower floor room. Nothing. Overall hotel feels dated, they are still using box TV in the rooms!.
