What people say
No frills, but excellent value! Pros: Hayes Valley/Alamo Sq
location; friendly staff (Venice & Alex at night; Manager Michael by
day -- all very attentive/helpful); cleanliness (spare, but clean
linens -- and zipped mattress cover that would make it tough for bed
bugs to hunker down -- shared bathrooms very tidy); volume discount
(price for standard double room dips to $55 at 3+ nights). At first
additional $6/day for Wifi irked me, but then it made sense. Not
everyone needs Wifi -- and, wi. all reviews »
I very much enjoyed my stay at Casa Loma and would recommended to everyone on a thigh budget. As a single female traveler I felt very safe and location is pretty straight forward to get you ti central of SF. The only thing I've missed was a kettle as there was a small little fridge in a room ans missed my morning coffees as hell! :( There is a vending machine within hotel premisses but make sure that you always have enough change or otherwise you will walk for miles to get cup of tea! The stuff.
The location! It is literally just a block away from the famous The Painted Lady houses at the Alamo Square. Public transport is everywhere and it is super easy to get into downtown and all the other main tourist attractions. Even by walking, it's a safe picturesque area, very pleasant to walk around as it is not far from most spots. The room has basic stuff in it, bed, basin and a cabinet. Bathrooms and toilets were shared (at least my floor). Everything was clean. There is a laundry shop, sev.
The gentleman at the front desk was courteous and helped me carry my luggage up to the 2nd floor. I'll admit that I was a little hesitant staying at a hotel that was also labeled as a "hostel," however, to my surprise, my room was spotless clean, not a speck of dust or dirt anywhere. We asked for extra towels and received them with ease. The location was fantastic- easy access to the Muni and great restaurants just a few blocks away.
-Not expensive
-Quiet
-Sheets and towels were clean
-Shared bathrooms and toilets were clean and available when needed.
- Location! It was a really nice neighbourhood. If you buy day-passes for the public transportation, it will be really convenient. The hotel is very close to the public transportation.
-Microwave and washing/drying machines in the common area
-Friendly staff
-On-time airport shuttle
-Very convenient for city trip.
Very clean and close to everything. Shared bathrooms/ shower were
very clean, no issues amd never had to wait to use either. The #22 is
right out the front door and will get you downtown with only one
transfer. Katie's kitchen is 3 blocks away and Suppenkuche, an
excellent German place is only six blocks or so. Steps to Alamo square
with a nice view of the city. Great value for the dough.
I feel very safe in the area. My son injured his knee and I needed to be close enough to him and this hotel is perfect. Very clean room and facilities. Staff were courteous. Very convenient transportation to go to the city center, Bart, Golden State Park. Close to buzzling Divisidero, hip restaurant. I would definitely use this hotel again.
Very good value for money. Clean and comfortable, the location is good,
right by Alamo Square. Comfortable room and I fell in love with the
view, we got a room that was at the corner of the hall so had two
windows overlooking San Fran. The bathrooms and showers though shared
were always available when we needed them. Would stay again.
Extremely helpful owner/staff; beautifully clean, quiet location but with close proximity to travel/trolley buses. Nice area with local eateries and a few bars within walking distance. Other residents and local people also friendly. This is a great place to stay - wish we could have stayed longer :).
Very clean. Rooms looked just like the pictures! Staff was great! 2 toilets and 2 showers per floor, worked out very well for sharing the bathrooms. Convenience store on corner, coffee shop just down the street. Location was excellent! Right on 21 bus route that went right down Market St.
If you are looking for a clean, cheap hotel in a great location with friendly staff this is the place to go! I come to the city once a month for doctor appointments and spend a lot on gas and food as it is, so I am very happy that I found a nice play to stay that won't break the bank.
This is my second visit tending to my son's knee injury. It is very close to his apartment, which makes it very convenient. I feel very safe in the neighborhood. It's very close to the hip Hayes Valley and Divisadero Street with plenty of of everything.I cant say enought about the very helpful and friendly staff. thanks for making my birthday a little special..... It was such a hard day at the hospital.. Great to have a safe clean and restful place to come to.... But Mike just put it over the top...
Clean bathrooms, good size bedroom, good location! Very helpful staff! I wrote an email to the hotel 'cause I was driving to the city and wanted to know more about parking and David replied me with a LOT of great tips!! Really nice guy! Good hotel!.
Decent value for money. Room was clean and tidy. Well equipped with tv and mini fridge. Pretty good location, just round the corner from the Painted Ladies, and various bus stops located a few blocks away. Food stores are a bit of a walk though.
Clean; no frills, but comfortable and easy on the wallet; relaxed feel of living in a SF flat; great view of cityscape and bay; brilliant location, near to Fillmore, Lower Haight, Church Street, Upper Market, and Castro neighborhoods by foot.
The manager at Casa Loma Diana was extremely nice. the nieghbor hood was residential but every body keeps to themselves in the city. i was able to take a 5 minute walk to find a street lined with food joints. didn't have to pay for parking.
It was a very very good value. Clean, friendly, great neighborhood. If you plan on being out of your room most of the time and just looking for a private, secure roof over your head when you sleep, this place is an excellent value.
good neighbourhood, good public transport, very nice and helpful staff, clean shared bathrooms and toilets, good wifi, nice view from the 2. floor (though there was a wall which blocked everything below 2. floor, so we were lucky).
Value for money, very close to some great eateries, ease of transport to sites and the city.
Alamo Cafe across the street for a good coffee. Restaurants 3 blocks south or 12 blocks north. No hesitation about staying here again.
* Very clean!
* Comfortable bed!
* Quiet, even though I was on the street side.
* Never had to wait for showers or bathrooms.
* Half a mile to lots of restaurants, bars, shopping, parks, corner markets, bus even closer.
It was very clean and well appointed rooms. Plus the staff was actually
quite helpful. It's a great place to stay for those who are looking
for a cozy place to rest without all the "amenities" of a more
expensive hotel.
It's a no-frills place. I stayed in a room with a bath, but I understand most don't have that, so understand what 'European Style' means. Staff was great and kept their cool with some jerks. Location is perfect.
I liked the hotel location (away from downtown and in a neighborhood) - it's close to public transportation, restaurants, and one of my destinations: Yoshi's. The toilet and shower were available when needed.
Great price. Staff was excellent!! Great location..Great vibe!! Felt
pleasant to not be in a huge motel..Nice and quaint with a great coffee
and breakfast house across the street.
The desk staff was very helpful giving me directions and ideas on what
and where to visit. The room was comfortable, and the bathroom
facilities where well maintained.
I like how they didn't clean our room daily, so we could sleep in.
It was 1 block away from Alamo Square. There was a bus stop at the
bottom & top of the street.
This is like living in someone's home excellent value for money. Very clean it is in nice area more guest house than hotel but would definitely stay again.
The building was very clean. The staff was friendly. Bathrooms also
were very clean. It is well located. I would stay at Casa Loma
again for sure.
The rooms were really clean. Size was good. Bathrooms were clean
and practical. Location was awesome. Staff really friendly. Safe to
stay there.
Nice room, private but separate from rooms restrooms and showers, location, cleanliness, I would definitely stay here again and recommend it.
Very friendly, respectful, and accommodating staff. Simple and modern
decor; "apartment away from home." Location could not be
more perfect.
I enjoyed the location of the hotel and the neighborhood was fun. I also felt very safe and found the people to be friendly and helpful.
Location is good, although not in the center of the city. Staff is nice
and helpful. Room is clean, shared bathroom is clean and tidy.
I like the rooms - small and comfortable. Great view of downtown sf.
Staff was nice. Location was good. Restrooms were always clean.
Great location manager Michael very accommodating good security entry well lit clean linens
All desk staff congenial & caring.
The price (considering the location) and cleanliness were unbeatable. The staff were helpful (despite what other reviews said).
Absolutely LOVED our room! Shower was nice, bed was super comfy, the fridge was perfect size.....five stars for our amenities!.
The location was great...it was a beautiful hotel that was in the heart of San Francisco. I would recommend it to anyone.
Cleanliness of hotel and facilities
Safe location and well placed for city sights whether walking or via public transport.
Close to park and downtown not far away. Easy access to freeways. Room was very clean and a good size for San Francisco.
Very nice staff, helpful with last-minute room change. Standard rooms in interior of building quit and comfortable.
The location and ease to pick up public transit were fantastic. We felt safe at all hours of the night there.
Location was excellent. Close to public transportation and Alamo Square Park. Clean rooms. Friendly staff.
The rooms are clean and basic and, for the location ( 4 blocks from
where my son lives) this is perfect.
Bathrooms looked clean. Low price was great. No problems with billing. Facility felt safe and secure.
- close to public transportation
- clean
- the shared showers and toilets were clean and well equipped.
Clean, well-designed rooms. Comfortable beds and good quality linens. Refrigerator in the room.
We really liked our room and the location of the hotel. The front desk
staff was helpful.
The bed was very good and the room large. Wifi was good. Common shower and toilet clean.
Cons: no elevators -- quite a haul w/bags to 3rd floor.
There is no elevators, so if you travel with heavy luggages like I did, you are going to suffer. Parking is also a bit of a challenge.
The noise of traffic from Fell St. But thats pretty much every where in the city. Also, I would have preferred a fluffier pillow as the one I had gave me neck discomfort (I stayed for 6 nights). The pillow is really not that big of a deal- these were the only "flaws" I could think of!.
-No elevator, so just be ready
-There was a slight smell in the room (but we had air freshener so no problem)
-No individual AC in the room.
Although the bathrooms were always super clean for some reason I was
never able to flush, both were getting clogged constantly. Not sure if
the walls are thin or guests loud but it was impossible not to hear the
other guests talking in French all the time they were in.
Nothing :) Would definitely stay there again !!.
Loud traffic noise sometimes made it hard to go to sleep. It would have been nice to have a coffe maker in the room.
This time the bed frame board in room 310 is very squeaky. Otherwise still comfortable.Lobby a little bleak but coming along....
Noise from the street is quite loud. No air conditioning.
Not surprisingly, street parking is a bear, though public transit is readily available.
parking is a FREE FOR ALL. but it is free. your car must be at most 6 inches from the curb. wheels turned.
We liked everything, but be prepared - the showers and bathrooms are shared. Noise travels easily, though it didn't affect my sleep. And there are no utensils available if you plan on eating in your room.
dusty furniture and a little bit dirty carpet in the room (however there was room service, the bed sheets and towels were fresh every day), poorly equipped room (no table, one chair).
Room was a little bit noisy from traffic especially as we sleep with windows open.
*One member of front desk staff didn't know anything about the area.
Needs to spend some time exploring the area.
* They don't sell laundry detergent on-site.
*Laundry facilities not open early or late.
*Laundry facilities were almost always in use by housekeeping.
The outer rooms do have quite a bit of street noise, but nothing that
kept me up at night.
It was a little too warm for my taste, and I didn't see any obvious controls. Really is bare-bones, but that's what you should expect.
I considered the hotel more of a short-term SRO and felt the rates were a little too high for what was offered. It was basic accommodations without the amenities that are offered by most hotels. The room had a refrigerator that was jammed beside one of the beds and it would have been a hassle to put in or take out anything because of the lack of space required to open the door.
I was driving thru..NOWHERE To park! I drove around for hours
looking..i have a knee injury so wanted to be somewhat close. But Front
desk boy called and gave my his spot as he was leaving around 10pm!!
Saved me..So if you have a car, make arrangements to leave it somewhere
and shuttle in to room..Other than that..For price and location its
worth figuring that out.
When it came time to check out there was no one to take the key from me.
I ended up having to call the manager from a line outside the building
and then he didn't even come out, he just told me to leave it in the
room. It was fine but I would have prefered a more orderly hand off.
There was 2 pillows on the bed when we checked in, but it would have
been nice if there was 2 more pillows. We were going to ask, but kept
forgetting. The showers & bathrooms were clean with the exception
that there was long womans hair on the shower walls, which isn't a
bad thing. It does make you wonder if they clean the shower walls even
though they are visibly clean.
shared bathroom but very clean there is no beds made up each day.
Few times I saw people waiting for a staff member by the door. Sometime
a staff member was not there or was in the back. Once I needed to speak
to a front desk person who never showed up until I called.
No parking lot. It was really hard to find a parking space around the
area. It took us like 15 min or more to find a parking space, and it was
5 or 4 blocks away.
Would have really appreciated some higher quality bath towels.
I would have liked more information in the room about the hotel and its policies. Information about places in the area could be helpful.
No free wifi. Public wifi costs $6/day however I was not able to get
an account for some reason.
When my partner and I checked in, the girl at the front desk said that
they ran out of the standard rooms so we get an upgrade to a suite. We
were both excited but it turns out that the "suite" is just a
standard room. No elevators. Stairs. Parking was hell. 1St night we were
lucky to find parking right across the hotel. 2Nd and 3rd night we drove
around for almost an hour before we found parking.
Could use accessible blind closures suite front room, table light in front room & middle room beside kitchen, lock for entry to suite, tv channel. guide towel bar n shelf in wcc carpets could use a cleaning, or wood floors w rugs would've been fine. Wifi even at some cost, public wifi was kinda weird.
The floor in my room was at a noticeable incline. I had to sleep with my feet at the headboard, otherwise the blood rushed to my head at night. Also, the window/natural light in the room was limited.
Very difficult to park on the street around hotel....Only drawback!.
shower controls in each shower on our floor (2nd) seemed like they were going to drop off any minute which made temperature control tricky.
No parking first come first serve. On 2nd night my car was broken in to. Didn't seem like a bad neighbor hood, maybe just a random break in.
Deluxe exterior rooms facing street extremely noisy, with busy traffic and thin windows allowing noise in, despite being shut.
Our room had no heating controls, nor were there any space heaters downstairs. it was pretty chilly the nights we were there, and a second blanket from the front desk was fine when we were in bed, but the room in general was cold for changing and hanging out in unless under the covers.
A bit noisy. Inner rooms are a little stuffy.
Staff this time ( not Mike, who is consistently wonderful) was diffident
at best. When I arrived early, was told the room wasn't ready, only
with asking, was I told I could store by bag. When I returned later, and
didn't have the key with me for the room, the man told me he'd
take the bag up himself, as the room key was with the housekeeper. When
I returned at 9 pm, I went' up stairs, to find no bag and had to go
back down to get. No apology. Not good service.
First night was relatively quiet, but the second night was noisy. I woke up to a baby crying all night. Early in the AM, the people in the room above us seemed like they kept jumping on a off the bed. They stopped after we tapped on our ceiling.
- we stayed in a regular bedroom with shared bathroom, and the price including all taxes was the same as a two nights king size bedroom with bathroom at a four star Las Vegas hotel.
Walls were a little thin. WIFI wasn't free. Light fixture in one of two shared bathrooms was not repaired in a 4-night stay, although we repeatedly asked that it be repaired.
Housekeeping would forget to bring towels, soap, toilet paper, so we had
to ask the front desk. The room really needs a box or overhead fan to
give some circulation.
Cold corridors because of construction works on going.
