When I book a hotel in midtown Manhatten for under $200, I am happy with clean sheets, clean towels and a clean bathroom. I got all of this at Hotel 31. It is no frills, so anyone who comes from out of town expecting a luxury hotel and then complaining about this is sorely misguided when it comes to Manhattan hotel prices. The location is perfect- walking distance to everything, around the corner from "Little India" all kinds of restaurants, walk to Grand Central and the 33rd st. Subway. Staff .
all reviews » This is a lovely small hotel at a very convenient and perfectly safe location. It really is at the center - so I walked most of the sightseeing attractions nearby. The staff is very friendly, organized and always available. I stayed in a room with shared bathroom and the bathroom was always free and clean when I wanted to use it. My bed was big enough and very comfortable and there was a sink in the room so I could wash my face and teeth without needing to go to the bathroom. My room was cleane. Even taking into account that I had used a shared bathroom, I can say that the hotel is very clean, done everyday, even if you don't ask for, towels are changed every day, bed is remade for you every day. Excellent location , within 5 blocks from the Empire State and from Grand Central. I walked about half NY form it. Tube is in a block, the line going straight along the Central Park, so if you take the tube the way to the museum mile is also comfortable and easy. Everything we needed and in an excellent location. Spotlessly clean and comfortable. Street noise from the windows but what else would you expect from NYC? I will certainly stay here again and would be happy to stay at the front of the hotel again - you really feel like you're in the heart of the city. Shared bathroom.never gone this route before and a bit concerned but no worries,only once did i have to wait,two bathrooms on the floor and they were both kept spotless, i am sure they were cleaned on the hour! I traveled by Amtrak and was able to walk from the station to the hotel in a matter of minutes. Good restaurants in the area. The hotel is 2 1/2 blocks from 5th Ave and the esb. Hotel 31 is a very good place to stay for the money. I would definitely consider staying again. Close to Madison Square Garden, Flat Iron Building, Empire State.Decent room size (twin room), bathroom clean & decent water pressure (private bathroom), plenty of room for multiple suitcases & 2 people getting ready. Has a lift to all floors and free luggage storage after checkout. More like a 3 star than 2 star. Excellent value. We were very happy with Hotel 31. We like hotels with a bit of character and this was very like the little hotels we stay in in Europe.The staff were friendly and helpful, the location excellent. The walls are pretty thin so one night I heard every word from the next room - luckily my neighbors went to bed relatively early. :) The wifi did not always work, I had some issues. No bad points to mention. nothing really. There is a pipe running from floor to ceiling. I assume it is a pipe for steam heat, since the pipe was warm to the touch. Off and on during the night the pipe would make a tapping noise { temperature change ?} The room was warm and comfortable { I was there the 2nd week of Dec} but the noise from the pipe was annoying, at times. Of course, the seemingly- constant sound of police, fire, rescue sirens from Park Ave {nyc never sleeps} drowned out the tapping pipes....annoying but not unbearable. Heater quite noisy, only horizontal blinds so light shines through quite easily. No fan in bathroom. Hard to get a taxi outside hotel. No complaints. Extremely tight quarters. Two people wearing backpacks could hardly fit in the elevator and the room was uncomfortably small for two people traveling as friends. This hardly seems like something to complain about when you look at the price. The antiquated elevator was annoying and a little dangerous when someone tries to open the gate at the same time you do. My key card failed to work about half the time, and I had to return seven floors to the desk to have it reprogrammed (a new system being worked on). The neighborhood was dirty but not threatening. Ancient elevator could hold only three people without luggage and perhaps only one with luggage. Small lobby and narrow halls made it awkward to navigate with luggage.. - The bed was old and fairly uncomfortable. It was ridiculously noisy so I found myself subconsciously not moving during the night and then waking up stiff. - One of the showers had trouble draining and hot water and pressure would cut out - Wifi was sometimes patchy and did not work for a full day. We asked for a quite room preferably away from the street, which we got, but one night there was a roof party on the house next door. A bit expensive, but that's New York I think... The room had a window facing a wall. So there was no daylight really. They only had double beds there and no queen beds. Air conditioning was buzzind and pounding loudly for all night. I think they should check and fix it. Staircase was a bit narrow. The hotel decor is pretty awesome, but the walls are paper thin and the whole shared bathroom thing works in Europe better than it does in the States. We also had some problems with unidentifiable dripping sounds at night. The room was quite hot and didn't easily cool down. The air-con was too noisy to leave on for too long. The old elevator with the metal, hand-operated door was charming until I crunched my finger trying to operate it. Request a room away from the street as it is quite noisy during the early morning hours. nothing. Small room and noisy hallway but that is to be expected. Very expensive for what you get, but still a value in Manhattan. The only dislike was the shared bathrooms, but I cant complain because they were very clean, and one was always open to use!. Small rooms. Small TV. The beds were slightly hard and the towels were small. Elevator is small and slow. Nothing. The staff at the reception was not very friendly. WiFi connection was terrible (I lived on 8 floor). it was fine and I would stay again- but it's an old hotel the rooms are small and the bathroom was very small. the old elevator is a real tripp!!. I stay there twice in one trip. First time my room was next to the entrance door to my floor and next to the restroom, and I herd a lot of sounds, before I sleep. But I was so tired, that It does not disturb me a lot (I got a long flight and big time difference from my country). But if you sleep with one eye open it may disturb a lot. Next time I asked to give me quiet room, and every thing was excellent. Loud ac. Bed was a bit small and so was shower/bath. Elevator and lobby were both small. a couple of times in the room i had seen cockroaches...but room and hotel are very clean.
