Located in Central la on Melrose which is a busy street but less than fi Hollywood Blvd or Highland or any of the big thoroughfares and keeping in mind that it's an old hotel, they're taking good care of it. While I was there, some rooms were furnished with new carpetting, hallways were being painted and new carpetting put down in the hallways all without too much bother to the guests. It's practically across the street from Paramount Pictures, it's within walking distance of Hollywood blvd/Sun.
all reviews » Pros I was able to check in early. Jonah at the front desk was very helpful. The decor is fantastic. The old elevators are really cool. The bed was very comfortable and the air cond worked great. Close to many Hollywood spots and plenty of free parking. The hotel has the look as the type of place a 1920's gangster would stay in it's really cool. Cons A bit pricy 137.00 for the night. No phone in the room. The room is small as is the bathroom. The surrounding area not the greatest and lot of tra. Bargin price was fantastic - with an excellent product. Clean - with real history. Stayed in a king room - with an actual small walk in closet. Carpets a bit old - but window AC units were adequate to freshen air. The bath was a bit petite - with the smallest sink that I have ever seen in a king room. Totally clean. Staff was friendly and very efficient - arranged for reasonable friendly airport transport. About one block walk from Paramount Studio. Not brand new - but loads of charac. I did like the guy at the fron desk who checked us in. He was very nice and talkative. I also liked the old feel of the building itself and all of the decor. Especially the pictures of all the old Hollywood film stars. I loved the old windows in the rooms and the fact that they also opened up was nice. The best thing was waking up to the view of the Hollywood sign and the observatory. I thought that was very cool. Lovely place, really done up nicely, superb looking bedrooms! Amazing lobby with chandeliers and all the old black and white movie star pics through out the place to stop and peruse... Huge walk in wardrobe!!!!!!!!!!!! Small bathroom, but was fine. Like stepping back in time to the 1920's, especially the elevator. We were prepared for a hotel that was not modern, but would meet our needs for a one night stay, close to Paramount Studios. Staff was pleasant and parking was closer than most hotels. The hotel was updating the windows to help cut down on the outside noise. Good price. We would stay here again. I stayed for one night and i have to say i don't have anything to complain. The building is indeed old but was not uncomfortable. I didn't noticed the bad things other people mentioned in the reviews such as bugs, funny smell, elevator not working. It had wireless, tv, AC in the room and parking. Great value for the money. I loved the way it looked - a large old luxury hotel of 1927 right in the middle of a busy street with Paramount Pictures right down the road. Riding in the small original elevator made me feel like I was standing where movie stars had been. It was very historic!. the location was perfect, the staff was over the top. this is the first hotel that I have stayed at that felt more like someone's home. it was great. It's nice to know that from now on I won't have to search for a place to stay when i'm in los angeles. this is the only place for me. thanks again. Our room had a view of the Hollywood hills and sign which was fantastic, Not too close to the hustle and bustle but a bus stop out the front of the hotel can get you there in 10 minutes. Hotel has been refurbished nicely. Rooms are clean, well maintained. Staff is friendly and helpfull. Parking is easy which is very important. Free wi-fi a great bonus. The decor with the old pix and wood makes it a nice, nostalgic place. I liked that it was close to (within walking distance) a lot of Hollywood attractions that I wanted to see, and was within a small driving distance to others (like the Griffith Observatory). The neighborhood was also very good. -The decoration is very impressive. -It took me only 10 minutes to drive to Universal Studio. -The hotel customized map is very beautiful! It's the nicest hotel in the area that I can afford for the time I spend in la to work. I do request certain rooms because of the shower heads. It is a clean hotel in a good neighborhood, with a comfortable bed and free wireless. everything was good, the room and shower areas were clean and tidy.I enjoyed my stay. There wasnt a phone in the room, so if you have an issue you have to go down to the lobby to enquire. Very minor issue, not really a dislike, just an observation. :). Nothing. All hotels put your credit card on hold for any incidentals. This hotel actually charges an extra $100 per room and does not plan on refunding this charge until days after your check-out. We had to insist on a room inspection at the time of our check-out and they issued an immediate $100 credit which still took over 24 hours to reflect on our charge card. I liked everything. Nothing really. Reviews had complained about the small bathroom and no blinds on windows - but I loved that too! The street noise was a bit loud but we are in Hollywood for goodness sakes. there was nothing I didn't like. It was the end of January, they had some cool nights while I was visiting, and the fact that I had to use a space heater that was provided to warm the room. Internet wasn't working due to upgrading of system, which I'm sure is fixed by now. You raised the prices!!! I hope that I don't have to search another hotel in the area because I really like this one. Sinks are tiny. You might want to bring your own pillow. Also, large people may have a difficult time in small bathroom. Very small. Kind of noisy. The Bathtub is only for decoration. The bathroom was very outdated, but clean.. I guess the curtains could be changed,unless that is part of the idea of the Historic. Although they have wifi, but we can't use it due the weakness signal. The room is small, especially the bathroom. Old equipment that no telephone in the room. Can't think of anything - Maybe a bar needed, but excellent breakfast and dining just a few step away. The shower head didn't work right, however they did make amends. The elevator was not working, but it's an antique. The place is a little rough around the edges, but nothing terrible. I didn't like the mix of smoking and non smoking rooms on the same floor, the smoke filled the hallway, and there was no pool. Other than that it was great!. It was quite cold, but I managed to find a heater in the closet. We were in L.A. during a sudden cold snap. The temps were in the 30s outside so our room dropped into the 60s and there was no heater! I had to sleep in my hoodie to keep warm!. The only negative was an "old hotel" odor in the room. It did quickly dissipate when I opened a window and some air came in... or maybe my nose simply adjusted. Needs more waste baskets. Windows need cleaning because the view of the Hollywood sign and the Observatory is great but the dirty windows took away from that. Wish there were pen and pad in the room so I could have kept as a momento. old style bathroom, there was a little sink. If you are going to allow the uneducated that still smoke their brains out to smoke, put a sign up to have them close the back door, parking lot side. The smoke filters thru the entire lobby, then upstairs to third floor. Fix that, I'll return. It is not the nicest neighborhood at night. Perhaps the front desk could give people a heads-up on how to use the funny old elevator (cute but takes a little practice). When it rains the wood expands in the windowseal, making it difficult to open & shut the windows, but that kinda adds to the old-world charm of the place. It is a little bit shabby, especially bathrooms, but it is always clean. There was no kitchen, the internet was not working very well in the room. Not a thing!. Wifi was a bit poor (had to go outside the room to connect) Is a very old building so some of the rooms had a slightly musty odour No safe. Nothing immediately close to do except paramount pictures. The hotel is a bit too far away from main Hollywood attractions. Elevator is still out of service. there was not anything to dislike. It's an old building, sometimes the lights turned off and the bathroom smelled off. The location is in a very bussy area lots of traffic.
