The Athena Guest House is set over 2 buildings, including one of the original red brick Victorian detached houses common in the area. Today, the main, original building has been converted to house comfortable en suite rooms, though it still retains lot of charm and atmosphere. The guest house is just a short distance from the city centre, but remains within easy reach of the city’s ring road. Public transport is readily available, with plenty of buses and taxis available nearby. There is a selection of twin, double, triple and family rooms available, each of which includes a number of small but welcome touches, such as a water filter and a choice of wireless or wired free internet access.

The owner was very welcoming. Also our room had various items e.g. dvd player, alarm clock etc which while, not strictly necessary, gave our stay a nice touch. short and sweet: just great (put i don't try the breakfast). the food (breakfast), the bed, the shower room. kind and very helful hosts. Very friendly and helpful staff. The room was stocked with facilities, including lots of coffee and tea (which is becoming more unusual, though certainly makes one feel at home), a hairdryer and generous selection of shower gels, conditioners, moisturisers and hand lotion. All in all, I felt we were made to feel "cared for". We were assigned the large attic room, which was most adequate for our needs. I would recomend this guest house, pretty much without reservation.
all reviews » The owner was very personable, friendly and accommodating. He insisted on making us breakfast at 10.30am even though this was well passed the agreed time. The hotel is in a nice location close to restaurants and walking distance into the city. Clean, comfortable and good value for money. I would definitely stay there again.The rooms are very nice and clean, and they have a lot of detaills to the client, in the room you can found blankets and a hairdresser. the service is really nice too. Location is good.for me, nothing!!. curtains were not thick enough to keep out the light at night time (room 2). There was dust around the bathroom window and a lot around the extractor fan, which looked unsightly. The window was going rotten, which is a shame because it's a small window and a lick of paint would be very easy to apply. General cleanliness of the sink, toilet and room was, however, up to scratch. Compared with other accommodation in the city, I think this guest house stands up well and minor shortcomings were more than compensated for by extremely generous facilities and kind staff. Dining area was a little small which meant we had to wait a while for breakfast.it was a bit cold in the evening. not easy to find when it gets dark for us......Distance from Center of town. But a bus was available close by and theservice was frequent. Didn't realise the guest house was situated opposite the biggest nightclub in Oxford! On our nights stay Radio1 were playing a gig and it was a bit lively. We could hear from our room yet it wasn't too bad. Something to bear in mind though.Initial impression of the hotel was that the front and the main areas of the hotel could do with freshening up however the room was very clean and comfortable. Parking a car is not easy there.It was a little off putting to find a flashing light outside the front door, and the fact that two mobile phone numbers were offered should noone answer the door!. Hotel does not look very appealing from the outside. Some noise during the night. Convenience. Not in a great state of repair, bathrooms need overhaul, water coming through hall ceiling, overpriced given this. While it was good to have a fridge in the room, it was quite noisy. Parking very limited. location was further from the centre of town than we expected - we walked from the train station on the first day but after that caught the bus. The room was a reasonable size but had a double bed and a single bed. Really there was only room for a double bed. Only one staff for everything. Lack of parking.

Breakfast is included in the quoted prices and is available every day in the dining room. The dining room offers comfortable seating and a breakfast bar with a selection of cereals, fruit, yoghurt, orange juice and grapefruit, as available. You can also choose either a full cooked English breakfast or a continental breakfast. The traditional cooked English breakfast includes sausage, bacon, egg, beans, hash browns and tomatoes. The continental breakfast, while lighter, is just as satisfying, with a selection of cheeses, hams and boiled eggs as available. Vegetarians can have a cooked breakfast with egg, vegetarian sausages, hash browns, beans, mushrooms and tomatoes, or cereal, toast, yoghurt and fruit as a lighter option.

Information about the area

Oxford is in the heart of England and is easy to reach from London and the South, as well as the North, Birmingham and beyond, via the M40 motorway. Oxford is also within easy reach of the West Country, via the M4 motorway and the A34. Wales and the Lake District are within a day's drive. The city’s central location and rich history makes it a good place to include in a UK tour.

The guest house is located in the centre of East Oxford, which has its own shopping area and is conveniently located for the Nuffield, Churchill and John Radcliffe Hospitals. It is also close to the business park, Oxford Brookes University and within easy reach of Oxford city centre by car, by taxi or by bus. A coach stop to London, or its airports, is within 10 minutes’ walking distance of the house. Coaches to London run regularly every 10 minutes. It takes approximately one hour to reach Marble Arch in London and approximately 50 minutes to reach London Heathrow Airport.

Travelling information

By Air (from London Gatwick, Heathrow and Stansted Airports):
Frequent coach services depart from Heathrow and Gatwick airports to Oxford. The Gatwick coach (X80) departs from the south terminal, bay 8 and the north terminal, bay 4. The Heathrow coach (X70) departs from the coach terminal at terminals 1, 2 and 3, at bay 10 or from terminal 4 at bay 19. These services are run by Oxford Express. The Stansted coach runs from Oxford to Cambridge and stops at Stansted Airport.

By Coach:
Coaches from London, and from Heathrow and Gatwick airports, arrive at the Gloucester Green coach station, which is just a few minutes’ walk from the city centre. Use local buses 5, 5A, 5B or 1. The boarding point for the 5, 5A and 5B is at Queen Street and the boarding point for the number 1 bus is at the Golden Cross, which is on Cornmarket Street, near the junction with the High Street.

By Train:
Buses run regularly from the Oxford railway station to Cowley. The number 5 bus, which goes to Blackbird Leys, runs every 12 minutes on weekdays and Saturdays. On Sundays, it runs every 15 minutes. Alternatively, you can get a taxi from just outside the train station.
