What people say
I was delighted that this hotel fulfilled my four major requirements when travelling:
1) It was conveniently located within the city centre.
2) It was conveniently located near public transportation (Deansgate-Castlefield station).
3) The price was reasonable (in this case, extremely reasonable).
4) The rooms included free wi-fi, and the signal was strong.
In addition, on this trip, I was particularly concerned about staying in a hotel where the rooms received BBC1. I've stayed in several budge. all reviews »
Location was very good, room was comfortable for the one night i stayed, does exactly what it says on the tin, would stay here again if on a short visit and the price is excellent. Its obviously rooms above a pub so you get what you pay for really, good communication with owners.

Close to city centre but quiet enough to get some sleep! Friendly staff, nice pub downstairs. Beds were comfortable and room was clean. Perfect for nights out when you just need somewhere to get ready and sleep!.
Very friendly staff, good location, so comfortable bed, nice, homely pub downstairs. Hotel is very old and need repair, yes, but for this value for money and considering pluses... Good choice.
I love how friendly the staff are - always make me feel welcome.
Old fashion shabby - chic, its basic but clean.
Rooms are always warm and cosy, no matter how cold it is outside.
Old and funky but very comfortable and good price. Friendly staff and classic bar in the lobby. Excellent location for City Center and canal district.
The atmosphere and the decoration, slightly out of date.
The warmth inside.
The managers.
The comfy blanket and pillows;.
Considering location and the price, it was very good value for money.
Great location. Good price. Basic but clean and friendly.
Price, location, convenience, staff, atmosphere.
Location and nice relation price and quality.
The owners, the tv bar, the location.
Good location and very kind staff.
cheap and cheerfull.
Situated close to town, on a street packed with comfy pubs and directly across the road from Manchester's science and industry museum this hotel has a great location no matter your interest. It is close to public transport and within easy walking distance of the centre of town. Our room was cosy and homelike with an ample bathroom (even a bath) and the traditional decoration added to the old English pub feel.
Staff were friendly. The room was clean and pleasant enough. Ideally located if you want to visit Granada studios, the Science museum or G-Mex.
Traditional pub with rooms, handy for Manchester City centre.
Friendly landlady and staff
Lovely cozy open fire in bar.
it was what youd expect for 27 quid basic rooms above a pub did the job for me id stay there again.
Cosy bar downstairs, simple and to the point, does what it says on the tin, all fine really.
position near town centre, shower and tea making facilities. price was good.
The location is very convenient and the price is so cheep with ensuit.
Friendly staff, free wi-fi, nice pub on the ground floor.

The location is great, within 5 minutes you can walk to central
Manchester. It is located in a nice area, with the quiet castle field at
the back. Good links to public transport, such as Deansgate nad the free
metroshuttle busses.
A lot of the other reviews that compare this hotel to 3rd world status, are a bit exagerated. no, it is not a great hotel, but what can you expect for this amount of money?.
The value for money ratio.
when you pay under GBP 90 for three nights, you should know what to expect. It is also conveniently located to walk to Manchester's main locations.
The location of the hotel is favourable for those who want to visit the Museum of Science and Industry and People's History Museum. It is also rather close to the theatre.
Nice and warm hotel and well located for Science Museum and Opera House. Bed Linen clean and ironed.
Decent location
Warm fire on when we got in from evening out
Value for money.
Proximity to the City centre is excellent.
Few rooms above the pub for a good price.
Cheap and gd location for MENS arena.
The bar downstairs.
Location.
Nothing about this Hotel would ever make me stay here Again,
This Place should me closed down as a healt hazzard,.
The only good thing was it was a place to sleep.
Absolutely nothing.
location was ok.
Coming home.
Not much.
Not much.
nothing.
The room (particularly the shower) was small, but for me that wasn't really a negative. I found it perfectly comfortable, although I realize others might not.
Really the only downside I can think of is that the hallways were a little grotty! And there's no elevator, which might be a problem for some people. But these are mild issues compared to how pleased I was with my stay overall. I'd absolutely book a room with the Commercial Hotel again.
Shower/toilet in room had no door and could do with new carpet. No food available onsite.
could do with a little modernising in the rooms but not assential.
Could do with some modernisation, and we had to prop the window open because we were so hot! But for the price you can't really complain!.
The smell of the corridors.
The fact that the hotel only serves alcohol and no hot drinks and snacks.
It was all fine by me.
The water in the shower was difficult to control but this is quite normal in England!.
Everytime when you close the room door, it slams very loud.
Room not update.
Our room was west facing which meant it got the full brunt of the evening sun. In the middle of summer and with a window that didn't open this meant our room was insufferable hot until after 10 at night. The wifi was a little dodgy and couldn't be accessed from our room, and our television set was broken.
The name gives the impression of a proper hotel but it was actually rooms above a pub. It's about a 35 minute walk from the hotel to Picadilly Station.
Quite rundown
No parking.
nothing really it was fine good cheap accomodation.
Can't really complain for the price in all fairness. If I was being annoyingly critical it was a bit drab, could have offered breakfast.
very noisy at night,ie,loud voices late, and door slamming, worst was person in next room decided to watch television through the night which was loud enough for me to hear every word and song. (thin walls probably).
the hotel id quite old and small, not so clean.
no door on the bathroom.
Room was small, decor a little tired.
The bathroom and toilet were without door! That was one continuous room with bed and commode. It was really very uncomfortable.
Window broken
Door broken - wouldn't lock
Toilet door broke
Toilet didnt flush
Kettle mouldy
Insect infested.
Not great conditions but you get what you pay for.
Room awful
Holes in walls
Bathroom war like
Room needs renovation & updating.
A bit pricey in my view for basic 'old-fashioned' accomodation.
It was OK budget hotel.
The room was not very clean. I did not have a bathroom, instead I had a
shower and a toilet placed in the corner of my room. No door, or
curtain, just a paper wall to hide it from the window.
TV set incomprehensible and eventually broken, weird shower area and curtain, no heating. Plus they charged my credit card in advance of my arrival.
The only staff member we saw was the man who met us at the arrival and who said goodbye when we were leaving. In all other cases we were supposed to call his mobile if we needed something. The rooms are dirty and weary. There were bugs in the bed.
Carpets and general decor require refurb. Bathroom very old and strange smell. Furnishings and fittings require update.
Untidy
Shabby - needs a serious face lift
Poor amenities.
Cleanliness and maintenance are non existent.
No reception 24 hours. Old equipment. Renovation needed.
Very shabby and well don't go looking for dirt lol bar was cosy with gd gas fires.
The bathroom had to be cleaned with bleach(brought by myself) as it was filthy.
Very dated.... hotel didn't think to mention that the tuc march was going to be stright outside room... had metal fences and stages put up at 4.30 in the morning. .. it was so noisey the windows were shaking. didn't sleep at all left at 6.30 in the morning..... wouldn't stay here again ... electric points were dangerous to.
Everything, Do Not stay in this hotel is you value your Healt an well being.
The room was dirty and nasty shower was very dirty
room had not been cleaned
dirty underpants under be
hand print on wall looked like sh**.
It was a joke! A rubbish, back-street pub, part of which had boarded up walls.
The rooms were a total joke - dirty, badly DIY'd.
Not sure pillow-cases were clean. We slept in our own clothes on top of the covers with our bags under our heads. It's ok for a builder's doss. Absolutely demand you take this off your site!.
pictures did not match rooms, very run down stayed one night would not stay longer it was dirty and nothing worked all old and broken shower.
The rooms were filthy, couldn't open windows, fire alarms all taped up , tv didn't work.....no customer service.
Rooms were dirty,bath was filthy.
Holes in the wall blocked with tissue paper and sticky tape.
Described as modern and well furnished was neither.
Would not recommend to anyone.
the room was very small
The room was dirty
hot water in the shower didnt work
the beds were unconfortable, small and dirty
very old fashioned.
filthy smelly cold water tv broke people smoking in bar when we returned worst hotel ever.
The room we had, number 10, felt like it was inside a furnace. The heat was coming from from behind a wall in the bathroom. Mold on walls in bathroom. if you can't find any other place then it would do for 1 night, otherwise...avoid.
