all reviews » Friendly and efficient staff. Lovely public areas. Chez Gerard is attached to the hotel and the food is excellent. Overall the staff in both the restaurant and hotel were very good although the bar was understaffed and we had to wait quite some time before being able to order a pre-dinner drink. Proximity to the city center and Victoria station. lovely big old hotel. Location. The staff were very friendly and efficient, the public areas looked fantastic. Lovely staff shame about the condition of the room - very tired. The bar food and drink service was excellent. Free upgrade so room was good. wouldn't have been if I had had a standard room!. the location was suitble for us. Hotel was nice and friendly. restaurant was excellent. Very little. the fact that from whichever way one approached it one had to negotiate steps. My wife found this difficult because of a bad knee. A lift would have been a good idea. Also some rooms on the third floor could not be approached directly by lift. The tea making facilities was in a drawer which I didn't find out till last day. Bath water could have been hotter.Room was very small. No Mini Bar. My eecutive room was adjacent to the train station and if you opened the window, the noise was horrendous. I therefore couldn't open the window during the night and the room was very stuffy.very small room,. It is getting tired now - needs refurbishing. There was no complimentary water in the room , the bathroom, while clean, could have done with refurbishment and the toilet paper was cheap and nasty!. Bathroom floor tiles very loose and quite dangerous, lost my balance once but landed safely. I did not like arriving having booked a deluxe room to be given a standard and having to argue the point.A minibar was delivered and stayed empty for both nights.If we had an executive room the standard version must be miniscule. Booked double non smoking online but they allocated me a twin smoking room. They did eventually rectify this. Being interrupted during breakfast about paying for the breakfast rather than just putting it on the bill. Too many foreign staff so communication between them seemed to be a problem!. I made a reservation on line. When I went to check in i was told that if I wanted a double bed i would have to pay an extra £50! This was not indicated at time of booking. As you can imagine it came as a bit of a surprise. The rooms were a disgrace, they do not relfect the lovely restaurant and bar downstairs. Wallpaper hanging off walls, matress awful, decor in general terrible. I'm surprised the standard of room can be considered 4 star.The hotel did not have my booking on file and I needed to get letsbookhotel.com to call them. I asked for early check in nothing had been done. the room leaked water it took all of the first day to move me to another. They checked me out a day early and i was locked out of my room. all in all not good. initially being put in a room unfit for occupation, will not stay at this or any other thistle group hotel again. Staff not friendly or helpful. Room was dirty. Stained and Soiled pillow case and bed sheet Light fitting loose on the wall. Loose toilet seat in the ensuite.Smell of smoking in the bedroom corridor. Smoke smell came into the non smoking bedroom through the air conditioning ducting. Minibar in one of the rooms was empty. No fizzy drinks or minerals to be had in the Chez Gerard restaurant. The hotel was the pits considering its star rating. This is the worst hotel i've stayed in for ten years.
