I arrived at a very unusual time. Whilst I didn't meet a member of staff the help I received over the phone was fantastic. This is a value for money hotel, which is what I wanted. To be honest I couldn't fault the place. They even contacted me after I'd stayed to let me know I'd forgotten something and offered to send on! Excellent value for money and clean. + A kettle in the room + Rather friendly staff (although not always present, see next point) + Quiet. Some people may not like the fact that there is minimum service, but for me it was perfect, as I like to do stuff myself + Great location. Very close to Lothian, Grassmarket, Meadows, quite close to UoE. + Not bad quality for these money.

We had a lovely weekend and the Gilmore was great. Jay was fantastic, we could not have been made more welcolme. I would go back. Clean and friendley. It was located within walking distance from the City Centre. I was clean, comfortable and very reasonable. We were able to leave our cases to collect later. Easy to get to centre of Edinburgh by bus or walking. small, cosy guest house, close to the university; washbasin in the room; tea and coffee facilities;. Cheap, not too far out of town, plenty of shops and restaurants nearby. I really liked the location and it was comfortable. good location. no hassle . good room. Location, big comfortable room. Location was great, pretty comfortable walk to Edinburgh Castle. You get a nice burger at The Cuckoos Nest pub just down the street. Good location. Would like to have been told it was a self service breakfast and that the proprietor was not resident.However everything was fine and it was not a problem. wiered way of check-in: via code; shower: the hot and cold water were running alternativelay every couple of seconds;. Having to share a shower/toilet room with 3 other rooms. Nothing really, could be more towels. Shower wasn't great and tiny in comparison to the size of the room. Relatively expensive and no breakfast. Room too small, hard to find the staff. bed kind of dipped in the center and has poor frame. My back didn't like it. toilet did not fill up all the way and had to hold down the thing in the tank for it to fill. remote worked off and on. other then decent place for the price. The shower didn't work in our room and our friends ran hot and cold. Small washroom, owner difficult to reach, even early in the afternoon. Hard to gain access- bit of a treasure hunt, following instructions (while speaking on phone) re code, lift lamp find key etc. also no sign of breakfast following morning, and bathroom while not exactly dirty, not pristine either. The room was very small, other guests were loud and calling out to each other in the stairwell. We had a window which was nice but there were some very noisy birds going off till late at night; very difficult trying to get to sleep. When it came time to pay the bill I had to go knocking on doors to find someone. All a bit weird to be honest. Tiny "bathroom" with tiny shower. Even spacious than a camping shower. Cold through the day. Heating is not workng until 6. Do not pay for your breakfast. Simple toast with 1 kind of jam, joghurt and tea/coffee is not worth 5 pound. We asked the staff to look after the light in the "bathroom" because it did not work. Answer on the phone: "it is working".The en suite was awful. The shower was bad. You had to step up quite high to get into the toilet. I have bad knees and found it very difficult. Would not use this B and B again, sorry. Member of staff who "greeted" me was unfriendly and unhelpful. Quite taken aback at how quickly payment was asked for. No mention of breakfast being available. The room was like an oven on the hottest week in Edinburgh's history. A window that let in no air whatsoever. Lack of towels. Would only recommend to back-packers on a low budget. nearby street, the problem to unlock the door. Hot water only at certain times. They cut the heating during the day so the room is cold most of the time and there is only a limited amount of hot water. Don't take the breakfast: it's very overpriced. No working hairdryer. No staff after 5pm & no staff in morning either for checkout. Late breakfast at weekends - starts at 9 am. Shower curtain had mould on it, a lot of dust in the room. Much nicer hotels for the same price near by. Strange checking in system. You ring a mobile number posted on the main door and someone tells you the code and you let yourself in. You then have to find the key which has been hidden. There is one small bathroom for the whole house. Expensive for the level of facilities provided, even taking into account the Festival 'effect'. Poor staff, not very friendly. Hotel only took card or exact money amount. Staff attitude, awful breakfast, general cleanliness. Saw nobody. Place was old dingy stairs very steep. The staff asked for the money on arrival. Hair on the bed and the toilets. A tiny bathroom. The place was so small that the shower curtain stuck on you when washing. Very noisy. Unkindly staff, small bathroom, I would'n recomend this place.Because of coming after 4.30 pm staff took 5 pounds more from us for only giving us code by the phone. I never saw a member of staff - I had to call (twice) to get the entry code for the front door. I had to call to leave a voicemail to advise I was checking out the following morning. I had to leave before the cooked breakfast I'd paid for was served. I was charged for 2 breakfasts having booked a double room although the booking was clearly for one person. I didn't get a response to my emailed request to be able to have a shower after I'd run the marathon. nothing very poor.
