Great location, great value and a very friendly welcome on arrival. As everyone says, be prepared for the stairs - it's the norm in Edinburgh. For the generous breakfast service next morning you can look forward to a cereal, fruit & yogurt buffet plus a delicious range of hot menu choices but heed the reception manager's recommendation to avoid their final 'rush-hour' if you're on a tight schedule... or else take a window seat, be patient and admire the views! I was amazed to receive a comp.
all reviews » The room was spacious and well furnished. We had a street facing room but the noise wasn't bad at all. You are given keys to the front door and your room on arrival so you aren't restricted by times. The staff were friendly and helpful throughout our stay (and remained so even though we had a blip). The breakfast was fantastic, plenty of choice and enough to set you up for a good day ahead. We stayed for the rugby and the central location meant not only could we explore the city but we could wa. The location is really good.Close to the train station in the city centre. Also,the size of the room and the views of the castle were amazing.Really good value for the money. The breakfast was the traditional Scottish breakfast but you could have a simple continental breakfast. There were a variety of juices (not fresh) and a good variety of cornflakes and muesli. One more amazing thing was the shower- jacuzzi..really useful after a tired day of sightseeing. The staff is amazing. The location is great, we got a bus from the airport and the hotel is 2 minutes from the bus stop on Princes Street, perfect. The bedrooms were big with basic furnishings. The cooked breakfast was excellent although cereal and fruit choices were very limited. The breakfast room got very busy but the staff worked hard and were very friendly. While not a cheap hotel it is excellent value for a city centre stay. I love Castle View. Stayed here several times now, each time in a different room and all excellent so far!! I had an exceptionally large room with sofa, huge bathroom and view onto the street. The rooms are comfortable and relaxing to be in after a days walking in Edinburgh. Breakfast is said to be good but I never made it in time again!! Close to Christmas markets and shops, restaurants, cafes. The whole staff, including the manager Magic, were very warm and friendly. We were very late for checking-in, arriving almost past midnight due to a missed connection. But Magic waited for us patiently, and welcomed us with a smile. The location is great- there is no direct view of the castle but its just a block from princess street and a few minutes walk to the station. Great location! Walking distance to attractions, shopping, restaurants and train station. We arrived very early and our rooms were ready for us. They have done very well for such a very old building. Newly renovated bathrooms, lots of storage for travelers. Great place to stay for city center activities. Excellent location and value for money. Staff were nice and service efficient. Easy walk to Princes Avenue, 10 min from Waverley train station, and 15 min to the Royal Mile. Many Pubs and restaurants around the corner along Rose Avenue were wonderful. The position is great, the staff kind. There are tea facilities in the room. There was a problem with the heating during our stay which also hit the hot water on our first day. The staff on duty dealt with the issue promptly. A heater was left switched on in our room so it would be warm when we came back and the hot water was restored the next day. We were offered access to an alternative shower in the meantime. It was a blip which was dealt with promptly and efficiently. The hotel does not have a lift.Our room was on the last floor-98 steps. Early check out-until 10:30. In our room whenever we used the bathroom there was a loud noise. The beds were very hard which was a little uncomfortable and the dressing table mirror wouldn't stand straight but nothing to put me off another short stay. I didn't sleep well atall as I'm sensitive to noise at night. As the room was over the street and the I woke up with every sudden noise and my room was close to reception so I also awoke when there was noise outside my door. It's not a terribly noisy location! Next time I'll get a room at other side of building. No problemo!. Nothing. Climbing stairs is the norm for Scotland, so no complaints. The plumbing system was a little noisy but not disruptive. Ground level entrance not that inviting but you get a nice surprise when you get up to the guesthouse itself. I didn't find the steps a problem. Entrance hallway is very drab and looks dirty but it is not, it is the colouring of the floor tiles that make it look so. Signage to reception could be better as could sign outside front door, we thought we had gone to the wrong place at first. Because we stayed for 4 nights would have like change of clean towels and more information/communication from manager. The noise the toilets make after flushing. I didn't like the fact that there was no hot chocolate. Everything else I liked. &Quot;Castle view" is a reach but can see it from breakfast room, looking up the street. View down on the street is amazing. The entrance way and stairs were frankly very offputting and belied the good accomodation on the floors above. Quute a lot of steps and no lift not a problem for us but would be for less mobile. LOTS of stairs - comes with it being a historic building. Probably not the best choice if you have heavy cases. A strange smell in our room... The stairs - but we knew about them in advance and to be honest they weren't that bad!. There is no lift and being on the 5th floor this meant there were 84 steps to my room. This was highlighted before I booked so not a surprise but still a lot of steps. Noisy plumbing. The location is so close to the party scene that late night revelers on the street below can wake you up. We were there on a weekend. It might be better during the week. The amount of stairs, we were on the 5th floor and I had two senior people with me. I blame myself as I should have asked for one of the lower down floors when I was booking it. Nothing really. Difficult to find staff sometimes and if you need 2 keys for a room they require 10 pounds deposit for the second key. We were in a room at the front on the 1st floor so there was quite a bit of street noise. Good points outweighed this, however. All those stairs!!!. We were aware there was no lift but having to climb 89 steps to our room was a killer. Breakfast room was cramped and cooked breakfast was delivered when you were only half way through your cereal (in our case hor porridge) so food got cold. The stairs!. room small but nice, ideal for a couple of days, but might have needed a bit more space if I was staying longer. Staff at breakfast somewhat distracted. Low Wifi connectivity. No elevator and rooms on 3rd floor . (Staff did help bring up some of our bags). Need to be aware that there is no lift and the restaurant is on the third floor. many stairs, bad connection to the internet. Room was wee bit small and a bit too warm(my fault as I didn't notice the radiator could be adjusted). Lots of stairs(but that added to charactor of guest house for me). Too many stairs, a little noisy. Plumbing VERY noisy - had to avoid pulling flush at night!. Too much stairs. For me wasn't a problem, but I suppose it could be for elderly people. The reception was at the 1st floor, my room was at the last floor, the 4th.

When you make your booking, please inform Castle View Guest House of your estimated time of arrival, using the comments field provided. Please note some of the rooms require guests to climb a number of stairs. Due to the age and listed nature of the building, there is no elevator, however hotel staff will offer to help with luggage where possible. Please note no smoking in the building and the charge for anyone found smoking is GBP 100.00 to cover cleaning. Guests causing any damage will be held responsible for costs. No visitors allowed unless by arrangement. Please also note if you have any special requirements such as food allergies, limited mobility or disability you should inform the hotel at the time of booking. As the building is historical there is no lift and guests will be required to climb stairs. There are no facilities for guests with mobility issues.
