The location is good (ten minutes walking to the station and Princes Street), the room is spacious and clean, the reception open 24/7. Free WiFi is available in public areas and a simple but nice breakfast is included in the room rate. The central heating has worked just one day, but an eletric heater was in the cabinet so it was fine anyway. This was my second stay at the Ailsa Craig Hotel, and the place was just as good this time as last. The staff is friendly, it's within easy walking distance of the tourist area and Waverly station, and the breakfast is outstanding! I had a top-floor room this time, which actually had a pretty good view. I highly recommend this hotel.
all reviews » Loved the building and the whole regency street. It felt like stepping back in time.(except you get a clean and modern bathroom) Beautiful views of the city from the bedroom window. The staff were friendly but not overley so. the rooms seemed to have pretty good soundproofing as we never heard our neighbours. This hotel is located on a quiet terrace within easy walking distance of several good restaurants and only a bit further from the old town district. It is well maintained and clean, and the staff were quite friendly during my visit. I highly recommend it!. We really loved this hotel! It was very close to the city center. If you arrive by train it is really easy to find it. Beds are comfortable. Everything was very clean, and the receptionist was very helpful. Great value for money. The location was perfect for everything we needed to do in Edniburgh. Within a short walking distance of Princes Street, the bus station and the theatre, perfect! Breakfast was very good too. We split our originally planned stay into two parts for a side trip of 4 days and the hotel stored our unneeded baggage for us while we were away. I liked the location, quiet yet not far from the city centre. The male staff were exceptional at the front desk, most helpful and not in a rush. I hope to return having stayed there on 2 occasions. This hotel has its own atmosphere, something like in old novels. Very kind stuff, good scotish breakfest, large room, we can see sea at the window. Not so expensive as other hotels in this area. The bed in our room was not made up after the first night we stayed there. Not a problem but I thought beds were made daily in hotels. everything was great - nothing to complain about. On my 2nd. Visit I was allocated a room on the top floor. I am 81 years old, and found this a bit steep. I asked the female receptionist if there was any chance of a change. A simple "No" was all I got. No conversation or help of any kind. Nothing to complain about. No Internet connection. My only criticism would be that the shower was a bit rubbish. A total of 70 steps to the top floor room without a lift. Internet is only in the dining area. Bed blanket is rather old and uncomfortable. (Please buy new blankets!!!). Nothing really to complain about as the hotel was adequate for the cost we paid. The stairs - it is a long long way to the top floor for someone who cannot lift their own luggage or their childs. But I had other family to help so it wasnt a big problem. Just very tiring. I knew about the stairs prior to staying. I stayed there on June 5-7, at that time the hotel was very crowded so it was pretty noisy. I wasn't lucky with the neighbours upstairs and I had to listen to them every night and morning as the walls are very thin. Tiny single room (like Harry Potter's cupboard))).WiFi barely works. A slight only slight inconvinience for families that have a buggy is that there is no lift so you have to carry it up and down. But we completely oversee it regarding the rest of the "assets" that this hotel has. Room whilst comfortable was on the small side. Only comment really, considering the stairs what would you do for someone who had walking difficulties. Nothing. No internet terminal. A bit more of a common lounge space would have been nicer. A bit more soundproofing between rooms also would have helped. Pillows not very comfortable. shower. N/A. Not many options of breakfast when you don't want the Scottish one. Very small single bed, décor a bit 'tired.'. Room was adjacent to kitchen so I didn't need to set any alarms in the morning. Room was a little small. Two singles instead of a Double bed but didn't ask to change as fully booked up so can't really complain. Beds were a little worn, blankets provided (would prefer duvet). Climbing 4 flights of stairs and my bathroom being across the corridor. The drab bed covers. They could do with a nicer colour as the light brown puts you off going to bed. However the sheets were perfectly starched white underneath. Nothing really - I would recommend it to anyone coming to Edinburgh. shower apart from room but no problem . No lift and it was a big struggle to bring luggage to and from the top floor (70 steps). Water pressure low and thus shower was not a good experience. Bit chilly, but electric heater provided in room. at time of booking my wife had not got her new knee, but had a operation 5 weeks ago and found the stairs (second floor) a difficult climb as it was after 2200 in the evening when we booked in and had been on her feet alot . needs a elevator. Bathroom sink, leaked and the plug did not seal when closed correctly. no lift - 70 stairs to top floor coffee was instant at breakfast not ground. People in adjoining property talking loudly in their back garden most of the night. decor very dated except for the modern bathroom.
