From the minute you get out of the taxi and see a small sign saying Nguyen Shack , you realise you have left the tourist area behind and arrived in the real Mekong Delta. I dont normally bother reviewing places but for my husband and I it really was a highlight in our 3 weeks in Vietnam. To sum it up : The owner Tao (hope spellings right)is an amazing lady who's main idea is to let us see the real people of the Mekong along with the main local attractions. all reviews » It's a breathtaking location by the river. Staying here you're up for a cozy, relaxed, very personalized stay. The huts are simple but charming, comfortable, very clean and you have stunning views over the river. Theu - the owner - ensures you have a great stay and a fantastic experience with the locals. The price includes a boat-trip down the river; a visit to (what's left of) the biggest floating market in Can Tho; a bicycle ride around the village where you get the chance to interact with . A home away from home. The owner is a great host and she will make you feel very welcomed. We have a little child (2,5years) who really enjoyed time there playing with the two little dogs and a cat. The location is superb. Far away from turistic path, great to meet locals and to see how they live everyday life. We learned a lot from the owner about the Viatnamese culture, she took us to the village by bike which was a highlight of our stay in Mekong. The place is very clean, the food in the res. What a great place. The location is exellent, not far from Can Tho and transport links, but still very rural. Theu and her staff were extremely helpful and kind, and made our stay very enjoyable. The tours are great and give a good insight into local life. They are also very reasonably priced. The food, which is all home cooked by Theu and her team, was probably the best I tastes in S Vietnam. The accommodation is in wooden shacks with ensuite toilet and hot water shower. Mossy nets and a reaso. We liked everything in this hotel! The couple that owns it is really nice and helpful (and they speak french). We made all the tours they offer and they are really authentic, like a tour in bicycle is the countryside to discover a pottery, a school, a rice manufactory etc (we didn't see any tourist there!) or the market in the morning. The location is absolutely amazing, you will have a bungalow with a wonderful view on the Mekong. And the food and cocktails :-) are as good as everything else. Maxime and Theu gave us a warm welcome and all of the staff were lovely. We did all three of the boat and bicycle tours and can thoroughly recommend each one as an insight into the local way of life including but going far beyond the floating market which is the main attraction that people come for. The bungalows were a great place to chill out and watch the world float by. Nice home-cooked food and strong cocktails! Their dogs, cat and pig were good fun to have around and frequently made us la. Staying amongst a rural community on the Mekong Delta away from the tourist areas. Cycling along riverbanks and tracks among rice paddies and villages. Being shown aspects of life on the Mekong Delta by the homestay hosts. The food was great. The homestay pets (2 dogs, a cat, and a pot belly pig) were never ending entertainment. Our private room with ensuite overlooked a river and farmland. The hosts provided optional tours around the local area by boat and bicycle, and these tours were an exc. We loved the peace, quiet and friendliness of the Nguyen Shack. Max and Theu were fantastic hosts and very happy to pass on local information in an easy going manner. I loved that our children could help themselves to fruit, yoghurt and water at any time. I could also serve coffee when I wanted. It was a welcome break away from the business of the Mekong Delta. We did all the tours, which I would highly recommend . Nhuyen Shack provides very nice shacks in the Meking delta. The staff is really friendly, Maxim and Theu are super great hosts. The food is very nice and the trips that they offer give a good insight into the life of Vietnamese people in the Mekong. Especially the trips to market and the bicycle tour are really nice. It is a total experience that you should not miss. The setting was extremely picturesque and the accommodation was lovely. The staff were fantastic and made every possible effort to make my stay as enjoyable as possible, not to mention the food. It was the best food I have had in Vietnam. The expeditions were very good and gave me a real feeling of the way of life on the Mekong Delta. This was definitely the best experience of our 3.5 week Vietnam. Feel, taste, discover, smell and see the real countryside in the heart of the Mekong. Stay includes top excursions and excellent services of owner and devoted staff. Don't expect luxury, but true and honest treatment. A must see location!!. We loved the location, a sort of bungalow on the riverside. The family who manages the homestay is very nice and kind, and you can also have a little trip on the Can Tho Floating Market with a little ship for 8 people. Water, coffee and tea are free, and also wifi. Excellent hosts, if you want to great the real taste of the Mekong then this is the place to stay. I liked everything and my only so minor thing would be to extend to bamboo door that covers the loo for little more privacy but again so very very minor.. It's not a negative point, rather more of a clarification: it's not really a homestay as the name suggests. It's in fact 5 wonderful huts by the river. But I suppose Theu's personalized service do provide that homestay feel. We knew this when we booked, and the truth is we were wonderfully surprised by the attention we got from Theu. Can only be reached by taxi -- about 150,000 dong from Can Tho. No other way to stay in a remote location though. Notting really. Lots of Mosquitos, and Can Tho is definitely not worry a visit!. The frogs!. Hot water is solar powered so was often only lukewarm. Wifi is 3g so ok to check emails but otherwise slow. Leaving and saying goodbye to the homestay pets. If you don't go like small insects it may not be the place for you. Although all beds have mosquito nets over them. To us insects made the experience all the more authentic. It is a bit on the pricey side - not the stay it self, but if you do all 3 tours with 5 people, it becomes a bit expensive. Each tour is about 10 US$ per person, so we spend more on the tours than on the stay. Would skip the afternoon boat tour. Absolutely nothing bad to say. we were very sad to leave this place, but 2 nights there is good / minimum required to relax and get all impressions uploaded. Just a little bit expensive. The wireless internet is poor. We got eaten alive at night by the local bugs so take spray with you, we would still return here again. The power cut that started after the first night, started in the morning, so no Internet, no fridge so all the food drinks were getting warm and they don't have a power generator. We were told this happens usually and last around 2-3 hours, after 6 hours still no electricity which meant none until next day.So we decided to leave although the accommodatio was paid and moved to a hotel in the city. Nothing bad to mention. Meals were sometimes a bit hit and miss. May be hard to find if your driver does not know the homestay. Despite this was our best time in vietnam by far. If there is one thing, I would say that the included bike ride was a bit special. We've seen a few local companies, schools and pagodas but we would have preferred to ride a bit more on the bike and spend a bit less time in the pagoda. We weren't informed that we would need to eat there, which was a bit uncomfortable. I would definitely not say this ruined any part of our experience and I would hotly recommend to stay in this shack.!. It didn't worry me, but guests need to know that it wouldn't be an easy place to stay for many older people or people with mobility issues eg. you have to walk in 500m from the road; the boardwalk to the bedrooms is narrow and uneven, it can be quite tricky getting in and out of the boat. Being eaten alive by mossies and the heat! Not their fault of course, and a net and fan are provided but this is basic accomodation, (which is part of the charm and experience), but don't expect luxury. It's worth it though. I think we did have some small company in the bed :(. Could not fault anything!. nothing!. I struggled with the attitude of the Saigon Travel Agent who was fairly unhelpful. That made it difficult tofacilitate transport to and from. Nothing - we knew it wasn't 5 star luxury. Lights and hot water could be more reliable. Nothing.
