After a very long journey traveling for two weeks with all day activities, we had a lovely relaxing time at the hotel, hotel had a lovely clean pool, with great staff all the time to help. The Spa they recommend you is fantastic, one of the best massages we have had since living in India. One thing I would like to point out for people coming from India is to carry Nepali rupees to pay for things in the hotel or card, as they do not accept Indian rupees. All restaurant/shops outside take Indian .
all reviews » The hotel is comfortable and not perfectly decorated or sterile. It has an old world charm and no pretense. It is a great location and pretty quiet (compared to the downtown area which is close by) It is nice to stay in a place that is not generic. the staff is very friendly and eager to please. By the second day, I did not have to ask for my masala tea at breakfast-it just came. Compared to other hotels in Kathmandu, it is quite nice (don't expect western 4 stars though - it is quite old). Especially nice is the pool, which is difficult to get. The architecture makes it special. Compared to the price (one third than the Raddissons etc.) it was very good value for money. Hotel Shanker is a very nice hotel. The staff in the hotel is very polite. The structure of the old palace is very interesting and our suite was great. It is a pleasure to relax on the pool side and we enjoyed the spa very much!. The pool area is lovely. Very calm in the middle of Kathmandu. We had a suite which was huge and very nice. The breakfast room is very light and airy. With Thamel on the door step you are spoilt for choice for dinner options. rooms clean and comfortable. the building was once a palace and it still retained some of its character. Some spots could use a paint job and the breakfast are is what they use for banquets (which is what it looks like) there should be a patio to have breakfast outside. The pool is lovely..however didn't like being squeezed out of it while instructor who must rent the pool for swimming lessons were being held. Perhaps you should divide the pool in half with swim rope while lessons are going on to give hotel guests a relaxed area to swim. Stayed for 7 nights but toiletries was kept only upon our arrival. even after reminders they did not keep it on the following days. No taxi stand nearby. I was charged $us17 to be picked up from the airport when many hotels provide this service for free. As a solo traveller, it would have been good to have some tables for less than 4 people available. Nothing. Hotel drink prices, periodic power outages. Not much clean toilets in the lobby and restaurant, power outages. Reliance on only one lift that works. freezing cold restaurant with some breakfast guests wearing gloves!!!!an old hotel so a bit dilapidated. So called "late" check-out was initially given as 2 P.M. This with 11 P.M. air departure. I had contacted manager months before and was told "no problem" with the late departure. Only after acting out on my part did hotel staff then give late departure of 6 P.M., a more reasonable time given airline check in doesn't open more than a couple hours out. A bit far from city center. Always be wary of the food. My husband ordered a [medium rare] burger and got a touch of food poisoning. bad roads and load shedding. Management could have been a bit friendlier!. Hotel is over priced for what is on offer. Bed was hard. Food was below standard. If it was 30% cheaper then I would consider staying here. 1. Sluggish service at times 2. Average breakfast spread 3. Travel desk does not have integrated billing with Hotel bill. One needs to give cash for hiring a car to the travel desk. There was no shattaf in the toilet they should consider this for Asian guests. Old style but untidy and dirty hotel. Scratches and the paint of the wall is falling apart, the elevator door are awful. The ceiling is full of wet. Is a 2 stars hotel with price of 5 star hotel.
