After a very busy month participating in work exchange in Akureyri, I booked a stay at Skjaldarvík the night before I was to fly to Reykjavik. And I am so happy I did. This guest house was like heaven on earth. It's outside of town (the perfect distance if you have a car), set next to the fjord, well decorated, tranquil, and surrounded by chickens, friendly dogs, and beautiful Icelandic horses. I spent my last night in Akureyri wandering around the fields and relaxing in the guest house's comfo.
all reviews » We really enjoyed our two night stay at Skjaldarvík Guesthouse. It is situated just off route one, five minute drive from Akureyri. We found the bedroom very comfortable and the shared facilities more than adequate. We decided to dine in the guest house on the first night as the weather had taken a turn for the worse – delighted we did as the food and service were both superb. I’m only disappointed we didn’t dine there on our the 2nd night (I found the local Thai in Akureyri very average). Bre. The guesthouse is very special, having a unique history of its own. The lady at the reception was more than nice and helpful! The room was the best we had in Iceland. Very big and with lots of towels. Although bathrooms wete shared ones, it was a treat to go into any of the many that are available. Except for being impaccably clean, the bathrooms were very spacious, stylish, with candles for atmosphere.. And full of extra towels. We were offered great bathrobes for using the hot tub outside. . Best place we stayed in Iceland! The staff was very helpful and welcoming. Rooms were clean and comfortable. Shared bathrooms were large and clean. Wash basin in bedroom was a nice feature. We went for a horseback ride and the two women who guided us were delightful. The ride around the fiord and surrounding hills was spectacular....a highlight of our trip to Iceland! The hot pot in the back has a perfect view of the fiord and was so relaxing and peaceful. The breakfast was good (we . First I'm not a fan of guesthouses/b&b's. But this place... Wow. Just wow. Über clean, super friendly staff, very well laid out, fantastic breakfast and well decorated even if the builing itself seems a bit creepy at first. there is even a horse farm ont the grounds. If you like animals this is the place: dozens of Icelandic horses right behind the main building, friendly (and I mean "run to towards you to so you can pet them" friendly) dogs and rabbits (yes, rabbits), and sheep to name w. Very good hotel, clean, large rooms and shared bathrooms. no queues to bathrooms, comfortable beds. Good breakfast. Also you can drink tea or coffee any time in dining room. I like big tea-cups :) Also you can use hot tub. It's close to Akureyri. Thanks to the lady on reception for recommendation of good restaurant to have dinner. We stayed only 1 night but it's a really good place to stay for longer time. Probably it's good to stay here anв travel around (Myvatn, Husavik etc). The guesthouse is quite large, but there are so many wonderful touches with the decorating and the staff are so helpful that it still seems intimate and welcoming. The onsite restaurant, self serve bar in the common area, hot tub, horseback riding, and delicious breakfasts make for a wonderful experience. My wife, 5 children and I would highly recommend this guesthouse and would gladly stay here again. Superb accommodation! Overlooking the lake and mountains near Akureyri, Skjaldarvik Guesthouse proves to be a cozy and heartwarming farmhouse. There are two adorable dogs, horses, swings, a hot tub and a basketball hoop. The owners are extremely friendly and they make their own jams and butter! Free beverages and wifi are provided all day. There is also a beverage counter where you can buy alcohol. very very helpful & nice people. they care you as a family guest, not as a hotel client, & that is how the hotel is made - live interiors, hand made decorations, fresh home made bread at breakfast - everything is living & full of love. We wanted even to change the plans & stay a second day, but there wereno vacant place that just proves how people love the place. The family run guesthouse was very welcoming. Very clean and food was to a very high standard. The bread with the pesto sauce was amazing! Tea and coffee was available at all hours which was fantastic. Staff... mainly the owners daughters were always around and were very friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay here again if the opportunity arose. Thank you. This place was the nicest place we stayed in Iceland. The whole place is beautifully decorated and it is obviously a lot of thought and effort has gone into everything. The 2 course meal was excellent and good value at 4,500ISK. The bar/lounge area was a great place with great views (with a honesty bar), as was the hot tub with beautiful views. Love this place, it's very well decorated, it's warm, the staff is helpful. Very nice location, out of akureyri but 10min drive and you are downtown. Breakfast was delicious with home made jams, breads, etc. For dinner we went to the thai restaurant downtown amazing we had a large window facing the fjord. The well-run guesthouse is located right outside of town, perfect for some quiet time. The front desk was helpful in providing me info for the day's activities. The dinner was very good at a good price. We also enjoyed the breakfast. We would definitely stay there again if we return to the area. FOOD! This was the best part of our trip, best food (amazing seafood dinner, perfect breakfast with superb coffee, everything you could possibly want and all very high quality ingredients), best design, nice people, great hot tub, and horse riding. Will ABSOLUTELY go out of my way to come back. This was a wonderful guesthouse with an interesting history and delicious breakfast. They have nice common area with a TV, games, and telescope, and an "honesty bar" where guests can help themselves to drinks and leave a slip behind so the drinks will be added to their bill. Simply the best I've ever stayed in Iceland. The bedroom was a bit small, but the comfortable bed made up for it. Only thing; it's an old care facility so unfortunately very echo. nothing to improve. The noise insulation, not good enough The number of showers/toilet for one floor. 2 for 8 rooms. Should have separated the toilets and the shower... We had a huge group of ladies on our night's stay. It was tough waiting for the bathroom in the morning. Luckily we weren't in a hurry. Hallway/hottub noise. Some people might not like that the bathrooms are shared, but this is common among guesthouses in the country. I never had to wait for the bathroom. The decor inside the rooms is wonderful but the corridors feel a bit like a school boarding house. As others have mentioned, the latches on the doors make quite a bit of noise when opened/closed and was emphasised by the echoey corridor (no carpet). This noise could be quite disruptive during busy periods. Location is not ideal being a few miles away from Akureyi. Somewhat hard to find. We had to ask for directions. But not a big deal. Shared bathrooms were ok. Clean and nice, however. Nothing special, wifi in the bedrooms could have been nice though. No public kitchen. Not close to the citytown. I didn't like to share bathroom. There was a strange odor in the building. I was a bit disappointed how bad the garden was outside. At least you cut the grass before you invite people to your place!!!. Rooms are small. Nothing !. thin walls, could hear lots of noises - fortunately it was low season, but I could imagine it would get loud during high season. sound travels down the halls since it was designed as a care facility. I wish there had been carpets or curtains etc to absorb noise. Noise levels in corridors and non en suite facilities. nothing. Our room didn't have much space for personal effects, and it smelled a bit funny. loved it all. Couldn't find out recipe for "secret soup". Shared toilets were limited so waiting times were long at times. no bidet shower - very important! toilet is shared lavatory inside the room is small for a European guest. Room a little on the small side but enough room for two people with cases. Bathrooms are shared.
