If you like a historic, vintage kind of place the Menger Hotel is just that. Has a lot o tradition and is very comfortable. Nice room - a little pricey due to the valet parking, but this is a downtown touristic city and no parking. Like the proximity to the shopping mall and Riverwalk. Very comfortable. For those who are coffee drinkers and must have it --- best coffee next to Starbucks.
all reviews » This is an old, historic hotel. As such, it has charm, character, elegance and comfort but do not expect modern amenities. For example, the older wing has only one small elevator. This is not a hotel appropriate for families, but great for couples, business travelers and retirees; anyone seeking beauty, peace and quiet, and something different from cookie cutter hotel chains. We had the unexpected treat of being escorted to the presidential suite during our stay for a convention, during which apparently the hotel was fully booked. The accommodations were more than comfortable. The decor evokes an earlier time, yet is thoroughly modern, much like San Antonio itself. Very friendly and helpful staff at the reception desk, and inside of the bar. The hotel was old, and had an antique classical look to it. The hotel had a large pool and several nice gift shops. The hotel also has a great location, close to the Alamo, and the Riverwalk. The hotel is well kept, we enjoyed the beautiful courtyard for resting in between walks to the River Walk. It is located across the street from the Alamo and is close to the mall entrance. We liked that it was close to the things we wanted to do. The Hotel has a lot of history. I enjoyed walking through the halls and looking at the old pictures. It is located next door to the Mall and to the Alamo. The Riverwalk is across the street. The Menger Hotel is the perfect place to stay. The Menger has a historic ambiance and feel which newer hotels don't have. I'm glad I stayed at the Menger, and wish it could have been longer. The only unpleasant surprise was the price of parking, but service was excellent. It was beautifully maintained or restored. IT was top of the line . We stayed in other hotels on this trip and this was by far the nicest. It was a classy place. I bet it was something in its day because it is beautiful now. Excellent location downtown near shops and nearby the Alamo and Riverwalk. Very clean, comfortable excellent amenities. The hotel is historical and has lots of photos and information about its history. General manager Javad, and Eve and Lenora from the restaurant, as well as Mary and the room-maids were real pros. I thank them for their excellent services, helpfullness and remarkable kindness. I loved how everything was walking distance and the Alamo was right next door. The Menger Hotel is beautiful it brought me back to the old times... We will stay there again. All the history of the hotel and the pictures was really enjoyable. The staff was exceptionally accomodating to our needs and it was easy in, easy out to the interstate. communal areas, such as the rocking chairs and the pool. Restaurant staff were very attentive at breakfast too. The history of the place is amazing, as is the location. very pretty great location historical would stay again but in a bigger room with bigger bed had a great time in SA it was our first overnight visit to river walk area. Rooms and lobby were clean. Staff was helpful and friendly. So much history and beautiful décor. Have stayed at the Menger before because of convenience also. Location is excellent and the hotel is beautiful. Staff was excellend and attentive, escpecially the valet guys. The room and the hotel were very clean. The feel of the history of the hotel. My two teens loved the way it was feet away from the mall. No matter what time of day it was, the hotel was quiet. The history and beauty of the place, the convenience, the wonderful buffets and dinners, the attentive staff, the quiet in the middle of the city. I appreciated the front desk clerk who remembered me from my past visits and commented on how I was doing. Very personable and polite. Perfect location-- directly across from the Alamo and centrally located to Riverwalk and other attractions (all within a short walk). The bed was great. Never slept so good in a hotel. The location is great can walk to everything and the hotel was rich with history. Location in the historic city and next to Riverwalk. Old world elegance and charm. And it's known to be haunted!. Although not on the River Walk, it is still a great location and has an incredible history. The gardens, pool area and lobbies. Cannot think of anything that I did not like except that the room did not have a fridge. I was unable to turn off the ceiling fan, and there was a lot of noise from the street until about 10:30 each night. (The hotel is in the heart of San Antonio's tourist district.). The one and only unpleasant detail was the hair found on the spa tub and on the shower wall. I did not like the restaurant. The Sunday buffet was 20 dollars and definitely in my opinion overpriced. They cut off the breakfast menu around 9:30 am at least on Sunday, without any real advance notice to sell the overpriced buffet. You would do better dining outside of the hotel. My room had a musty odor to it, but that really is expected from an old historic hotel. People walking around late at night looking for the Hotel Ghosts. But that was fun to watch too. Staff were not very friendly or helpful. Additional 2 days' fee was too high comparing to what I paid for the initial booking. Helpdesk was rather polite, but not interested to give exact infos on local and regional things worth to be visited: memorial buildings, museums, missions, concerts, festivities, shopping areas, etc. I didn't like that the valet parking was separate and we had to pay for of because the cheaper parking areas were low and we wouldn't be able to fit. Also everything was expensive at the hotel 8.00 for water we spent 35.00 for breakfast two eggs two pieces of Bacon hash browns and three pancakes with milk and orange juice. The pool closed way to early and the bar is expensive. This was our first stay at the Menger and our room was in part of the original hotel so we didn't really know what to expect. The room was great but the kingsize bed absolutely sucked! Good thing we had to get up early!!!!. There were hairs on the shower wall when i arrived. No shower gel available. Double bed was very small if i had been travelling as a couple. could not get room service was told it would take 45 min to get bacon & toast tripped and fell on loose carpet near room i'm ok just a little sore in knees. Paying for parking was unacceptable. I also saw a separate $5. charge on my card that I haven't been able to figure out. I understand it is an old hotel that had to be retrofitted with plumbing etc, but that took some getting used to. The room was not a polished as the public areas. The room was a standard room and it had a double bed. Kind of small for a couple used to sleeping in a king size bed. For the first time ever, I have no complaints. Housekeeping knocking at 9 am and a bit of long hair found in the bathroom floor of our room at check in. Limited menu selection for room service and the hotel bar. Took a long while to cool the room down. wifi reception in room a little unreliable. I didn't like that I had wanted to stay an extra night but couldn't get ahold of letsbookhotel.com to book it,but other than that it was great Thank you. The only thing I could think of that I really didn't care for were the beds. Kind of hard, but everything else made up for that. Once you leave the main lobby area,the hotel is just "tired". The carpeting, hall lighting, wall treatments, guest bathrooms and bed linen all are in need of serious attention to detail. Obviously the management subscribes to function over form. Nothing!. Breakfast menu was mediocre. Bad pillows!. Rooms had a stale smell and my husband got an allergy attac. No refrig. in the room - a sml. could be installed. SPA open at 10 am, tooo late. Fitness center is totally inadequate. What's not to like?. Room did not have drapes to cover the window and room remainded light from outside light. Was not conducive for sleeping. Coffee pot in the room was incomplete so we were not able to have coffee in the room. We asked at the front desk for replacement for the coffee pot and they promised to send one to the room but it never appeared. High cost of valet parking. Air conditioning in our room and the rooms around us was very uncomfortable (warm). We had to call management several times and finally changed rooms about 12:30 AM. The room was quite plain ,the floors creaked and the smell as you walk in the lobby was horrible( it smelled very old and musty). Not enough local channels on T.V. Pool and hot tub closed too early. We wanted to soak after being out all day walking. The stores close at 9 but so did the pool. Website was deceptive because the price wasn't consistent through weekend nor did I know it was only valet parking and $30 more a Day charged to my bill. My bill increased $200! :(. Lack of handicap accessible showers. All rooms with the exception of the Suites only provided tubs with handrails. We ordered room service for breakfast,pastries hard as a rock. Nothing. Room was a little small. Room was a little small, but for an old hotel, okay. The furnifure had some spilt coffee that had not been wiped off by the cleaning staff. And I did not like the coffe pot in the room. The coffee was so bad. And the style of the pot as far as the making of the coffee was not at all good! I am a coffee drinker and one cup is not enough and more so for a couple to share. Internet connection is poor quality. Shower gives just enough to get the shampoo out of your hair. nothing. Mattress lumpy and rooms to small.
