Better than the Belvedere! I visit NY all the time and usually stay in 4 star hotels, sometimes 5. I was a little worried about the Gem, but decided I should try it out. Best decision I made. The place is a gem. It is compulsively clean, beds are new and all white, bathroom was pristine, and the reception staff could not have been more helpful. It is a steal as it is half the price of 4 stars.

It was convenient location in mid town and an outstanding value. It was really priceworth for liveing on manhattan and pretty close to timesquare. They didn't have and place to eat so might not recommend for familys with small children, but younger and mature ppl I would highly recommend it. Because getting something to eat isn't a problem as you are only a few blocks away from timesqure. It was really clean n a big bathroom n Bed, that was clean n comfortable. The bed was about the most comfortable I have ever slept in! Room was lovely, clean, crisp bedding and comforting. A really nice room to be in. It was very clean and the staff was helpful.Hotel has a very central location. Althought the room was not big, it was very nice. within walking distance of main attractions. cleanliness. I just wish I had gone there before. Yes the rooms are small and there are no views, but who cares. And besides, I paid over four times that rate for a room at the Waldorf that was smaller and offered my sister (who uses a cane) a rollaway bed, whereas we got two doubles at the Gem.Location a bit strange, not much right around the hotel, had to walk a block to get to any restaurant. Staff said neighberhood was safe for walking around at night. We wish that it had been closer to Broadway. If the weather had been better that probably would not have been a factor, but we ended up doing a great deal of walking in the rain. As far as the room itself, it was great. The only suggestion would be a little more closet space.We booked a kingsize bed which was not available anymore upon arrival, we had a queen instead. We had a late-night return flight; but latest check out possible was 12.30h, late checkout not available without paying half day rate (200 USD). room a bit small. The room could have been cleaner, floors did not seem well cleaned. They were not successful in making our wake-up cll which resulted in us missing our ride and having to spend $20.00 on a taxi. there is no sense puting a king size bed in such a small room; it was dificult moving around in the room. If we can't get lower prices in New York I'm not sure we'll be coming back.Staying in New Jersey and taking the train back and forth is looking possible next time.Nowhere to hang coats/jackets! Very compact space. small roon even for space for luggage, room cleaning is not enough.
