A wonderfull histroic building with loads of charactor but was clean and bright and the facilities were awesome - new but all in taste with the age of the building. the room was so tastefully decorated and in such a lovely old building - it was a pleasure to stay there. everything!! The room, the location, the bar...The location is fantastic and so was the room. Really atmospheric and nicely furnished. Felt/looked really luxurious. Not sure if I would have paid the full price but for the LetsBookHotel.com discounted rate it was a complete bargain. Thank you. Very confortable room with a lot of charactor, perfectposition for York and the Minster. Friendlly and obliging staff. The room was extremely warm for mid September. We had to ask twice for a fan to cool it down. Well presented, friendly, warm, cosy and superbly located, virtually in the shadow of the minster. Very nice place. Its central location, stylishly decorated and relaxed atmosphere assisted by friendly staff. The history behind the hotel was great and the location was fantastic. The room was tastefully decorated, clean and the bed was good. Staff extremely pleasant and helpful.A very enjoyable stay in one of Yorks olde world hotesla. Room clean and tidy. No problems from the bar below/ Good value for money. Good staff and management oh yes the ales worth drinking so no need to go out. the pleasant warm cosy atmosphere. The location of the accomodation was perfect for our stay. The location within York is perfect for visiting the city. The staff at the hotel were exceptionaly helpful under the circumstances of a major refurbishment taking place. The builders were very polite and made access available when we were going in and out. Chris was a star. Lovely quaint Inn, lovely snug public rooms, and excellent attic bedroom. The location was excellent, the room cosy, the bed good, thebathroom good. The convenience of the location. Also the room was pleasant. The room and atmosphere. the bed was v comfy, fab location, wonderful building - potential to be the best in York. there was a bit of noise from the street. We didn't like the fact the staff didn't tell us that we had to go down to their other hotel - Guy Fawkes for breakfast (although it was an excellent cooked breakfast) or that they couldn't recieve card payments when we came to check out, but they did apologise and told us where the nearest cash point was!. The room was tidy but the odd bulb didn't work and some soap in the bathroom would've been nice. Including a cooked breakfast at the Lamb and Lion, additional to continental, would demonstrate greater value for money and therefore enhance our stay.I booked the hotel and gave my credit card deatils expecting to pay thisway. However when we checked out we was told that the credit machine wasnot working and we had to pay by cash which we did not have. Many guestwas not happy about this so me and my husband had to go to a bank anddraw money out between us. If we had known this when we had checked inwe could have saved some money!. A few points of concern. I wasnt able to pay by Visa, a basic need in this day and age. wasnt that keen on going to get cash at 8 int the morning. Also having to go to another hotel 100 yards down the road for breakfast was not ideal!. Lack of comfortable public room(s). The room was not as described and you had to walk through the beer garden to your room, could be noisy at times. Hotel only takes cash or cheque. Also shower was tempremtal but fixed straight away. No major gripes. Would have apreciated it if we had known about the breakfast sitation, we ended up rushing own the street to get our breakfast as it was not explained to us. Thought that the price was a bit high considering the refurbishment that was taking place, we found out about the refurbishment work from trip advisor just a few days beforte we were due to go on our trip. The hotel gave us the option to cancel but we chose to go ahead, when we got there we were given the option to stay at an alternative hotel for the first night but declined this offer. Very confusing arrangements for car parking - in public car park about 1/2 mile away. The room was extremely small, hardly any closet room, a very narrow(wooden) staircase up to 2. floor, no fire escape, apparently very thinwalls, check in and out in the bar. There was confusion about the parking permit, although we ended up payong for the parking and had the amount refunded. The breakfast was not great and the staff who were on duty in the morning were not paticularly helpful.Even though the breakfast was lovely we had to leave the hotel to get it and go to another hotel - we were not advised of this prior to our stay. tiny box room; not enough room or plugs to boil kettle;Tv didnt work; had to pay by cash?!; breakfast down the road at another establishment (v inconvenient); website said price of room included dinner but when arrived was told it didnt. Shame really.

Hotel information details
The inn stands at the original Porta Principalis (main gate) into Eboracum, a fort and city in Roman Britain, today known as York. It is believed that a tavern has stood here since the early reign of Emperor Septimius Severus in AD 193.
During the Siege of York, the inn, then known as the Bird in Hand, was ravaged by fire when the Earl of Manchester's men bombarded the city in June 1644. Over a hundred years later, it was rebuilt and renamed the Lamb & Lion by a wealthy merchant.
Today, the inn offers an excellent selection of real ales, wines and champagnes, alongside home-cooked food, with daily specials featuring good, simple dishes prepared using fresh ingredients.
