The very warm welcome, the staff could not be more helpful, the location was relaxed and quiet but perfect by the ferry. The continental breakfast with its vast array of fresh food was the best I have ever had and I visit many hotels in many countries. The cooked breakfast was excellent too. The room was spacious and very well equipped The whole experience was lovely,the lodge was very good value and should be rated at least 8.5.

The lodge was immaculate and our room was first class with a lovely view. We chose continental breakfast, great selection of cereal, fruit etc. Houton Bay Lodge was our favourite accommodation during our holiday. Value for money. Great view, quiet area, good food worth paying extra £9 for breakfast, nice and clean,not far away from Kirkwall about 15 mins drive, very nice owner, went out of her way as did her daughter to help complete my little guys outfit for a wedding (thank you) would stay again. This is a well run family hotel and Linda and her husband go out of their way to make sure that you are comfortable and feel very welcome. There is so much to see and do in Orkney and their local knowledge was very helpful. The breakfast of fresh fruit was fantastic. Superb location, watch the ships go by, views of Hoy and the Sound. Very efficient service, and both friendly and flexible. Well set up bedroom with plenty of facilities, great common room/conservatory - views even when it's raining!. Unique location by Scapa Flow - very quiet! Given key for access at any time. Manageress stayed available for our late arrival and very helpful with advice re sightseeing. Room very clean and fully appointed. Despite a very late arrival we were warmly welcomed with a glass of sherry. The continental breakfast was very extensive with lots of fresh fruit. The very warm welcome, the big cosy romantic room and very comfortable large bed and the stunning view over the bay with the hills of Hoy in the background made our stay at Orkney something to repeat. Proprietor and staff were very friendly and helpful. The location was rural and quiet, but easy to find. It made a good base for visiting most of the major sites in the West Mainland region. A quiet place out of the way of everything - and the Suite I had: spacious and with the little Extras - you just could not have wished for more! I'd definitely come back!. Initial reaction to modification of booking, but this was sorted by Orphir to both our satisfaction. Breakfasts somewhat short on variety and standard. letsbookhotel.com needs to communicate better with the hotel to ensure there are no unexpected over-bookings. Shower poor, room quite chilly even with radiator on, but then this was in February on Orkney. Didn't take credit card which made it rather awkward for me (who goes round with lots of cash in today's world). In this day and age that seems a little archaic and if it continues needs to be made much clearer on the booking form. letsbookhotel.com do not have a breakfast cost included which is strange given it is a B&B. otherwise no complaints. The location can also cause some problems to visitors travelling without a car. Nothing !. First impression due to approach through ferry terminal. Need to drive for evening meal. The linen and decor a bit tired. Payment is cash only and has to be made night before deaprture. Can be awkward if your schedule does not match owners. The price - £125 for one night!. the staff made up the beds etc. while we were having breakfast and had NOT vacated the room yet. We still had a lot of personal items lying in the room. Nothing. See last box!. Hotel would only accept cash. Would not take either credit card or cheque. location.

The Houton Bay Lodge is family run by your hosts, Lynda and Alfie Baird, who take great pride in the inn’s clean, comfortable accommodation, its relaxed, friendly atmosphere and the locally sourced home-cooked food.

The lodge’s lounge bar offers traditional Orkney ales and whiskies, plus a wide range of other drinks.

The residents’ TV lounge and conservatory is a great place to relax with a cup of coffee or a drink from the bar. You can watch the large widescreen TV or simply enjoy unforgettable views of Houton Bay and the hills of Hoy beyond, not forgetting the huge natural harbour of Scapa Flow and the Sound of Hoy.

In the lodge’s reception area, there are 2 computer work stations with wireless broadband internet access.
