We stayed for 2 nights on our arrival to Madrid (into Atocha Station, which is about a 10 minute walk straight down Calle Atocha); the young, ultra-helpful staff was a pleasure to deal with - they are sharp people and we found no shortage of good English among them. Location was outstanding, there are small street shortcuts to every major downtown spot (Puerto Sol, Plaza Mayor, the museums, Retiro Park, the double decker bus stops, great restaurants very close in Plaza Santa Ana). all reviews » I rarely give top marks on the grounds there should always be room for some improvement but I'm struggling to find any fault with the Catalonia Atocha. Within half an hour of booking I received a "welcome" email from the hotel with detailed and useful information on how to find the hotel whatever the mode of transport, I’ve never had this before from an hotel, it boded well and I was not disappointed. Without exception the staff were welcoming, friendly and helpful, and equally happy to speak . A lovely hotel in a fantastic location, within walking distance of a lot of Madrid tourist hotspots, 1 min walk to nearest metro and 5 mins to a main transport station. We were at the back of the hotel so it was very quiet, with blackout blinds, that made for a restful nights sleep. Good spacious and clean room. Bathroom was a good size with a HUGE walk-in shower with rainfall shower – so big you could have fit a bath in there too, which would have been nice. A very good breakfast buffet with l. When I arrived the young man on reception was extremely helpful - congratulating me on my birthday and then upgrading me to a lovely bright room overlooking the road. I also then recieved a slice of cake and card from the hotel wishing me a nice bday! The hotel is extremely comfortable - the rooms are spotless, all new interiors and the showers are fantastic. The rooms are not massive but more than adequate, including two seats and a little table and a black out curtain to block the sun should. I literally cannot rave enough about this hotel. The rooftop spa is sublime, the service absolutely impeccable, the food A1, and the rooms: clean, comfortable, large and well appointed. A hotel of this caliber in NYC or Boston would be $500+ per night, so at closer to $225 I thought it was a bargain. The Atocha area is more authentic Madrid than the area around Sol and Plaza Mayor. It's more arty and collegiate, which I liked. The Prado is a short walk, and across the street is an indoor market. Modern hotel in excellent location. Madrid is quite a small city but the location of Catalonia Atocha meant that we were within walking distance of pretty much everywhere that we wanted to go/see- approx. 10-15 mins walk from Sol (lots of bars etc), 5 mins from Calle de las Huertas (lots of restaurants and bars), 10 mins from Prado, Reina Sofia Museums etc. If you don't want to walk, there is a metro stop less than 5 mins away. The bathroom was very impressive with the heated towel rail and huge 2 person shower was something you would expect from a more expensive hotel. We would definitely stay here again! The jacuzzi was a nice touch in a city hotel and we even ordered room service which was superb!. The Hotel was lovely. Perfect for someone travelling alone. Good location with all the main sites easily walkable from the hotel. For trips further afield the metro is literally outside the hotel and Atocha station is a 5-10 minute walk. There was only one issue that mainly bothered my partner and that was the bathroom door – frosted glass with the hotel logo in clear glass, a 3 inch gap at the top of the door and no lock. It is worth noting that the street the hotel is on is not fantastic - there are some homeless people on it. That said you literally take any turn to the right and you are in at santa ana maria which is a lovely area abundant with restaurants and bars where you can sit out and have some nice taps and drinks. We really missed having tea making facilities in the room. This is something we expect from most hotels. Nothing. Nothing we were happy with everything. That we forgot our chargers for cameras and phones - our fault, but the hotel are being very helpful in getting them back to us. There is not a thing we didn't like about it!. Nothing which is worth to mention. Do note that the hotel does not seem to provide toothbrushes. Not sure if that is the usual practice cos the other hotel I stayed did not provide as well. The tissue supply was low. It didnt come in a box but only in a sealed packet of about 5 pieces. Hotel rates change by the minute depending on it's demand... I stayed one more night than planned and the rate went up 40% for that night. Would like pillow as an option rather than Spanish style long bolster. Otherwise the beds are very comfortable. The internet key has to be constantly repeated, as connection is automatically lost after 30 min or so. It would have been good to have been able to make tea or coffee etc in the room. We had a very miserable meal on arrival about 9pm so were not tempted to have breakfast or further meals. €10 for a cocktail on the roof although nice was full of ice and very little alcohol !. Nada. Air conditioning didn't work properly. We spoke to staff twice, but it still wasn't resolved. Some staff very unfriendly. There were no vegetables at breakfast, except that everything is perfect. The room which they gave me at the first beginning was full of smell, someone was smoking at the room. But luckily they changed the room. Nothing - wonderful hotel. The wifi was poor. We were on the 5th floor and found that the connection was weak and intermittent. The outlook is not as attractive as from some other hotels but that is compensated by location. A small detail: would have loved for the sun terrace to stay open past 9pm - only because we could have spent many more happy hours drinking sangria and sitting in the jacuzzi!. Breakfast options a bit limited. Selection of the hot food options can be improved. Tea should be served in Mugs and using very hot water!!. Twice room service forgot about towels, but no problem to ask them at reception. I would only say that the bathroom floor wasnt perfectly well cleaned when I arrived, but was ok anyway. The window in the room was very small... But the rest of the room compensed that, also bearing in mind I payed only 75€ per night!!. First time the staff gave the room for us was already in use. This is the major problem of the security.
