The general ambience of the hotel. With the exception of 1 member of staff we were very impressed with the way in which staff had been trained and the way in which they attended to every need of their guests. Our room had an exceptional view and was very well equipped. Buffet breakfast was one of the best we've ever enjoyed. Dinner in the Grill Room was everything we'd expected and very good value.

It was for our wedding night and the next morning for breakfast the hotel staff gave us cake and sweets, really nice of them!. The hotel has an amazing history, atmosphere and character. You get an impression of great luxury and oppulence but the staff are still friendly and welcoming. Everything was perfect. The accommodation first class, the service outstanding. In the end we extended our stay from three to six days because it was so good. Despite the long story in the: "What didn't you like? " I enjoyed the stay; it is really a five star hotel in a super location and worth a visit any time. We were very impressed with the check in staff at the front desk, very efficient and professional. They remembered our names for the duration of our stay. The location is truly amazing. Rooms are wonderful and the staff very helpful and friendly. This is possible the best Establishment that I have ever had the pleasure of staying at. Personal touch and felt like being part of a family. Food was wonderful. Staff very friendly and helpful. Breakfasts Room Kids Club Personal attention. Loved it all. Everything. Everthing. Our room was very small and if we were to return we would certainly expect something larger and more comfortable. Shutters don't block the sun totally. The rooms are very compact and the lighting system was quite complicated to figure out. Could not fault a thing. I had booked"garden view room", but my room 222 at the end of the passage had a view direkt into the blook of flats next door! This sort of thing always happens; the worst rooms go to the solo traveller!! The hotel was not full, but most probably because I got a better rate through letsbookhotel.com than what the hotel would have charged, my request of a better room was ignored. The room service bar order was cheaper than the mini bar in the room. The only criticism I had was that the water in the bathrooms was just luke warm. This needs to be corrected. Nothing. Room smaller than expected Booking of restaurant for night when we arrived was a problem as we were told it was fully booked. Monkeys were a nuisance. Some of the wiaters were a bit surly ( Vassie). Excessive profit margins on food and beverages. Nothing. The famous South African Biltong in the bar fridge was terrible. If I remember correctly the brand was Greenfields.

From Durban International Airport: - From the airport, travel north and follow N2 Stanger signs for approximately 30 km to the M41 Umhlanga / Mt Edgecombe turnoff; - At the traffic lights, turn right over the bridge and continue on M41 for approximately 1 km; - Take M12 Umhlanga Rocks Drive off-ramp, turn left at traffic lights and follow M12 Umhlanga Rocks Drive for approximately 4 km, until reaching Umhlanga Village; - Travel down Lighthouse Road towards the lighthouse; - The Oyster Box Hotel is on the right. From the North Coast: - Travel along the N2 South. Take the M41 Umhlanga/Mt Edgecombe turnoff; - At traffic lights, turn left and continue on M41 for approximately 1 km; - Take M12 Umhlanga Rocks Drive off-ramp, turn left at traffic lights and follow M12 Umhlanga Rocks Drive for approximately 4 km, until reaching Umhlanga Village; - Travel down Lighthouse Road towards the lighthouse; - The Oyster Box Hotel is on the right. From N3 and Johannesburg: - From N3 Southbound, travel approximately 2 km past the Pavilion Shopping Centre until you approach the Four Level Interchange 165 (Spaghetti Junction); - Take the North Coast N2 Stanger left off-ramp and travel on the N2 for approximately 15 km; - Take the M41 Umhlanga / Mt Edgecombe turnoff; - At traffic lights, turn right over the bridge and continue on M41 for approximately 1 km; - Take M12 Umhlanga Rocks Drive offramp, turn left at traffic lights and follow M12 Umhlanga Rocks Drive for approximately 4 km, until reaching Umhlanga Village; - Travel down Lighthouse Road towards the lighthouse; - The Oyster Box is on the right. Directions from the King Shaka Airport: - Exit out the airport to the left onto the R102, proceed on the R102 until the Umhlanga Ridge off-ramp; - Take the Umhlanga Ridge off-ramp and turn left (this will be onto Umhlanga Rocks Drive); - Keep on the right lane and pass the MacDonald’s and the Umhlanga Hospital, which is on the left; - At the second traffic circle, go around it and come down towards the sea on Lighthouse Road; - Drive all the way down the hill . At the four-way stop, take the right fork and the entrance to The Oyster Box is on the right.
