We arrived at Lion's Rock not knowing what to expect as the internet was our only reference. We were met by very friendly and accommodating staff and throughout our stay they could not do enough to make us feel welcome and satisfied. The rooms were comfortable and very clean and with great views. We learned about the Four Paws organisation on the game drive and were in total awe at the immensity of this extraordinary project to save and rehabilitate traumatised, wild life. all reviews » Lionsrock is highly specific in what it is and what it does. For that reason it is a very interesting place to visit - for a day or so. It is a little inaccisible vis-a-vis other attractions around the eastern Free State, reinforcing the need for a short visit. Staff and facilities are good for a 3-star establishment. The welcome we got was very warm and especially we checked in at midnight. The owner was very helpful and passionate about his mission and he really touched us in understanding the place. The room was cozy and comfortable and our breakfast was nice as well. The view was breathtaking. It is a little heaven hidden. Guest House from Four pawns " vier Pfoten" for wild cats. Look on Youtube video of Four pawns Lionsrock. It is a great place to learn, understand. Friendly, peacefull, quiet. Room, Dinner, Personal, Breakfast and Areal are excellence. The big cats are amazing, an exceptionally well run ngo and facility. The food was great and the location has fantastic educational opportunities. So good to hear and see a good story in South Africa. I will definitely go again. The sanctuary is a must see for every traveller, it is an experience that leaves one feeling fantastic. It is obvious that there is a real passion for the animals. Waking up to the sound of the lions in the morning, and seeing stars at night. The animals was in good condition and healthy. Nothing. Nothing. There was absolutely nothing not to like. The kitchen produced adequate to good food, but insisted on serving cooked meals on cold plates! In the room, all was good except that the towels were rather threadbare. The road to get there in a car is very difficult especially at night. Would have liked a longer tour, a 2 hour tour does not cover all the cats. The only one minor problem i had was that there was 2 single beds put together for a couple. Small minor issue. Cannot think of anything I did not like. The gravel road to the lodge was really bad especially at night. Was worried that we would burst a tyre. Our booking was scheduled in their books for the wrong date and therefore our room was not ready when we arrived. The mess-up with our booking for the game-drive was a HUGE disappointment (although we found out about the accident on the news on Monday night - it made the disappointment bearable - honesty would have been appreciated). The roads to the lodge. There was no electricity in the room on arrival and we were offered a smaller room, but it was sorted out quite quickly and we stayed in the room we had originally booked. We felt that the cook needs cookery lessons!. Not easy to access Facilities not for the physically impaired. Bed is old and lumpy. A bit hard to find the location and it would be helpful if they had maps posted to the website. Long wait for dinner to be served. I feel the many options on the menu and only one chef caused delays. Maybe be an idea to offer fewer choices. Single beds Gravel road. Not enough staff. I thought we would be able to see more of the lions and rest of the animals. My kids were very disappointed. Dinner sometimes bad (Meal not well prepared). 14 km off road way is very unpleasant for normal cars. The long gravel road. there was no proper arrangements. Not family friendly. No proper oven so very hard to cater for young family. There is plenty of space for an oven, so very frustrating. Lounge suite very uncomfortable. Patio design quite dangerous - missing tiles & a bit high - not child friendly. Breakfasts at lodge were awful. Left lodge one day early because we were so frustrated & uncomfortable. Won't stay there again or recommend to stay. Pity as could be really nice if these few little things were addressed. Our room was not properly cleaned before we checked in. There was a coffee stain on the one table, and a half used shampoo bottle in the bathroom. Breakfast was late, badly planned and service poor. The food and the service. There was nothing that was good. I will never stay there again.

Travelling information

From Bloemfontein: - Take the N1 to Kroonstad. - After about 140 km you will reach Winburg. - At Winburg turn right onto the N5. - From here you will pass the towns of Senekal and Paul Roux, travelling a total of about 131 km to reach Bethlehem. - The road entering Bethlehem is a one-way street. - Follow this road through Bethlehem, until the last intersection where Johannesburg is signposted on the left and Harrismith on the right. - On the left you will see be a mall and a garage. - Take the left exit here onto the R26. - Follow the R26 for about 5 km, until you reach the signs for Warden Road (R714). - Turn right here and continue a few hundred metres until you see signs to Lionsrock. - The signs are on the left and the road is on the right. - Turn right onto the gravel road and continue for approximately 13 km. - On the way you will pass cows on your right-hand side and signs to Kukuzans Game Farm on the left. - A few metres later you will see signs directing you to the thatch roof entrance to Lionsrock. - Security staff will greet you at the gate. From Johannesburg (via Warden): - Take the N3 (Heidelberg/Durban) road. - Just outside of Heidelberg, you will come to the first toll gate. The charge is approximately ZAR 24. - The second toll gate is at Villiers. The charge is approximately ZAR 33. - Continue towards Warden. - Take the 2nd exit towards Bethlehem (R714), shortly after the church on the left-hand side around a bend in the N3. - You will now cross the N3. - After about 40 km you will come to a 4-way stop. - Continue straight ahead for around 35 km. - About 5 km out of Bethlehem you will see Lionsrock signs on the left-hand side. - Turn left onto the gravel road then follow the final directions above. From Durban: - Take the N3 towards Harrismith. - In Harrismith take the N5 towards Kestell/Bethlehem. - About 15 km after Kestell you will see a Lionsrock sign on your left hand side. - Turn onto the S176 gravel road and continue for about 13 km. - When you see another Lionsrock sign turn left onto the S175. - Continue for about 8 km and on the left-hand side you will find the gate to Lionsrock.
