The staff at Gion Maifukan could not have done enough to help us. They were attentive without being intrusive and after the first night moved us to a bigger room to accommodate the four of us. Gion Maifukan is right in the centre of the Gion and couldn't be in a better or more charming location. The Japanese style room was spacious, clean and comfortable and the kids loved the Apple TV. I loved the spacious bathroom/ shower room and the room also had the extras such as good quality toiletries,.

In the room there are TV,air conditioning, kettle, tea,. We stayed in Gion Mayfucan in June 2013 and we had a pleasant stay at this hotel. Good location close to the ancient city and walking distance (15 minutes)to the shopping street. The staff was excellent , they were very professional and helpful. We had problem with withdrawal money (just few atm machines in Kyoto accept international credit cards) and the staff provided us with any information and map about banks or post offices that accepted international credit cards, they even rang up the ba. We stayed in the Japanese-style room which was fine for the most part. The futons on the floor were rather fun and comfortable. The staff was extremely helpful and friendly, the hotel was impeccably clean and the location was perfect. Bus stands were close by and there was more than we could possibly see or do within walking (or bus) distance. We loved wandering the streets and quaint alleys/brick lanes around the hotel and visiting the neat little shops tucked away all over the area. (Be sure . The location was great--in an older part of town with many shrines and temples, restaurants and shops within walking/biking distance. The room was very clean, spacious and comfortable. (I had a western-style room.) Little fridge in the room is a plus. They have bikes for rent, which is convenient. The staff is attentive--for instance, at one point I left a bag with some rice balls and some drinks in the lobby while I went into a little shop that's connected to the hotel, and one of the staff pl. Absolutely faultless service from the staff at this accommodation. We booked a Japanese/Western style Suite for our stay and it was more than adequate for our needs. The large fridge was replenished with water daily. Staff checked with us each day we left whether it was ok to clean the room/prepare the sleeping area etc. and a cross-check was made each time. Fantastic location for exploring the umpteen shrines and temples of Kyoto on foot. August perhaps a tad hot for this but we still managed. We would highly recommend this Hotel for a stay in Kyoto. Kyoto station is easly reachable with the bus 206 (the fee is 220 JPY, the way is 20 minutes). The staff was nice and helpful and the Hotel and the room was really clean. Gion district is the best to stay in Kyoto, because the most important things are here: many temples, shopping area, tea houses, plenty of resturants. This is the perfect area to have fun. Downtown is also closeby, about 20 minutes walk. To go back to the train station . Everything. From the minute I arrived to the hotel's lobby I felt that service was extraordinary. It was just above and beyond. The way guests are greeted by the hotel personnel is just wonderful. Location wise, it was literally right across from the Yasaka Temple which is a main site in Tokyo. The main streets and the Gion district is less than 3 minutes walk. The size of the room is very spacious and I was surprised how big the room was provided that it is Japan (I booked a double room)! I li. Staff were excellent, provided us with maps of Kyoto, and Gion area, gave good recomendations of which places to go for autumn leaves viewing. They also informed us of which temple gardens had the nite illumination during our visit and had maps available. Bus passes were also available at the hotel and the bus stop was just down the hill about a 3 minute walk away. Hotel was in th Gion area which is really nice with great restaurants, conveniece stores,and souveneir shops etc. All within walkin. Tthe location cannot be beat. We had Japanese style futon rooms so different but comfortable. The staff is excellent. Very helpful with a decent knowledge of English. Actually treated like a five star hotel as far as service. The location in Gion is unbeatable. There are bikes to rent on premises and because of the location we were able to explore Kyoto extensively. Great value. The staff are extremely helpful and are ready to solve all practical problems that a traveller can have (E.G. where to exchange money; how to get to certain temples which are further away etc.). I recommend a Japanese style room which is very traditional, with simple design and quite spacious. Kyoto: amazing city, if you are passionate and curious about Japanese culture, ancient style, temples, gardens, history, and want to know and feel Japan, Kyoto is the place to visit. Gion is wonderful.. Recognized as a city world heritage and undrestand why now. The staff was our favorite part of our Japan vacation. We found out that it's easier to reach the hotel by bus from the train station, rather than train. If you want a great ryokan experience, this is a great spot. The staff were fantastic, the room was clean and comfortable and the location in Kyoto in mid-Higashiyama was fantastic. I love that Gion Maifukan is accessible to the attractions in Kyoto, shopping street, bus stop, subway while being in a quiet and charming street. Some of the staff were incredibly helpful. Location was discreetly fantastic, just around the corner from the paved streets of the Gion etc. There was nowhere to sit other than the floor in the Japanese-style room (even to put on your shoes). The hotel was expensive but that is probably due to its location near the Gion district. There was nothing I didn't like. WiFi internet a little slow in the room. Location of room meant that it was facing a well-used car park. During the day (and part of the night), when cars were leaving or entering the car park, the barrier continuously beeped. This didn't really disturb any of us, but might be a consideration for those sensitive to noise - I am sure they could move to a higher floor or room located on the other side. The Japanese style room was fun for two nights, but I would not recommend it for a longer stay. It is not the most comfortable and the room equippment for us Europeans was a little bit "poor" in this type of room. Big solid nothing!! Nothing that I didn't like. From the bus stop to the hotel you have to climb a bit of a slope. Not difficult if you are reasonably fit. Nothing much really. Just they make you pay when arriving at hotel and everything additional you ask you pay first, but I think its everywhere in Japan.. Kyoto: nothing much, lovely city.. Its just hard to find a place for dinner or just randomly walk somewhre as its just not obvious from outside,everything's close and hidden. The Japanese style bedroom had a nice sized room and bath, although we found the futons minimally comfortable. The western style bath was extremely small with the door opening into the room, so it was sometimes difficult to get in and out of (in the middle of the night, etc.). nothing I can think of. This place isn't cheap - you definitely pay for it. I'm sure there's better value for money out there, but Kyoto is an expensive city, and if you're willing to pay a bit, this gives you what you need. Having great staff is a definite bonus. It is relatively far from Kyoto station. We had a little difficulty finding the place and the price was a little steep, although this May have been due to the season. The japanese style rooms are quite simple and may not please people looking for luxury and western accomadation. There was absolutley nothing negative to mention!. the check in time is 3pm and the check out time is 10am. would be nice if in at 2pm and out by 11am. Nothing negative to comment. Nothing at all. I stayed in a Japanese style room. As long as you understand what to expect, you will be very satisfied. The room was very bright in the morning. one very small thing not a real big issue. Some black out blinds on the other two windows in the room so we do not get woken up early in morning with the light. Nothing we thoroughly loved it. None. It was a little pricey (we'd just come from 5Star hotel in Tokyo which was less per night)... And the room/space was a little on the small side for 2 adults and 2 teens.. but being out all day sightseeing was good compensation. Charge o f $50.00 for an extra person.
