The vegetarian temple food was excellent. Opportunity to take part in prayer ceremony. View of the garden from the room was excellent. We were fortunate to be allocated a large room with private facilities and view of the garden. Temple breakfast includes traditional vegetarian dishes, and an excellent tofu. The atmosphere is interesting with winding corridors and beautiful sacred objects.
all reviews » the room and the garden are so impressively beautiful. rooms shared a big beautiful garden, where you could enjoy staying in room opening the sliding door and feel peace. when i stayed , it was mid summer and a beautiful blue flower tree was blossoming in front of my room. We were pleased with our entire experience. We enjoyed our morning prayer experience with the monks. The rooms were large and clean and overlooked a lovely garden. It was the perfect location to take a dusk stroll through the famous graveyard. massive and beautiful apartment for little money in comparison to other temples, very central (though everythign is central there), lively - when i was there- and nice food... two monks tried to make more of a connection which was nice. Very nice room with traditional tatami, futon and an amazing view on the garden. It's located close to the Okunoin cemetry and within reasonnable distance (about 1 km) to the town centre and the Danjo Garan. The calm of the temple, the spacious room and the view of the inner garden from the bedroom window made this stay a highlight of our trip to Koyasan. Attending morning service was a privilege. Quite location; morning Buddhist service is part of the experience; vegetarian breakfast; close to the Okunoin, which is a very large and extensive graveyard. The room and environment are fantastic and very scenic. The environment. The monks were quite helpful and communicative; their little garden was beautiful with red and yellowish foliage colours. The morning prayers were really amazing. Kotatsu helped to survive colder mornings and evenings. It was quite interesting to stay in a temple and experience the Buddhist ceremony. Located at the center of Koyasan. Travellers need to be patient when asking for information - responses can seem abrupt. It is worth persevering until you get the information you need. Like most ryokan and all minshuku (family inns) the pillows are hard and small so I brought my own. communication with monk was only very little possible, on one hand because of little english skills, one the other hand one could have gotten the impression that there was no willingness to try ....but I guess it were a few busy days I was there, plus in the end you are just a guess who is allowed to observe rather than mingle... The ceremony in the morning was very simple and I did not find it very spiritual as a monk was explaining what was going on in japanese the whole time. The vegetarian cuisine at Sekishoin was not as good as I thought and expected. very few of the staff can speak English, learn some Japanese. Too temple kind of feeling and not so suitable for tourists who are Christian. The staffs need to be more friendly and customer oriented. The value for money. But this is for sure common to all the other hotel facilities in Koyosan. You pay for the experience... Too commercialized. Participating in a morning meditation was like being in a museum with a guide. It's quite pricey. The toilet rooms need some renovation and cleaning; I wish there were hot running water in the common washroom. The veggie breakfast was quite tasty but I was hungry after one hour - beware! There is no wi-fi in the room, only next to the public bathing area. You cannot pay with a credit card. Not so clean. We had the feeling that the staff wanted to do the job as quickly as possible in order to finish it and almost "get read" of us. I was really disappointed by the experience. It is hard for me to say if its because I am not Buddhist, because the staff did not speak English or because the problem is in the general experience... Mount Koya is very nice and worth a visit if you have time but not worth the money for sleeping there. The staff/monks were rude. The food was poor quality. There was no attempt to provide any cultural insight. Locals suggested that I go to other temples to learn as these guys have "sold out" their faith. Also local cafes played the old "no seats" (when the cafe was clearly nearly empty) game when a Western traveller arrived by herself for dinner.

The last cable car from Nankai-Gokurakubashi Train Station leaves at 22:42, so you must arrive at the station by then in order to get to the property. Please check the train schedule from Nankai Namba Station to Mt. Koya in advance. To eat dinner at the property, a reservation must be made by 15:00 on the day.
