La Bastide Saint Martin overlooks a gorgeous piece of countryside, is set in a lovely big, sparse garden, has a great pool and it's rooms are quiet and simply, though beautifully decorated (we wanted to take the shutters home!). What really impressed us though were our hosts who were incredibly warm and obliging and who went above and beyond for us after we managed to get ourselves into a bind. all reviews » My boyfriend & I both loved staying here, we stayed in room 3 & we were able to walk straight onto garden & to pool. We spent 1 night in the medieval city then 3 nights at La Bastide Saint Martin, it is more in the countryside & the outdoor pool is lovely for sunbathing, relaxing & switching off! One day we hired the bikes & the owner gave a map & we took the scenic route by the riverside & then over the future bridge into the centre for lunch & wine then cyc. English speaking staff is very hospitable, friendly, helpful in reserving resaurant for dinner (which was excellent: food as well as value for money). Very clean and coutryside stylish rooms, spacious, convenient. Breakfast is cheap (8 eur) and modest: croissants, jam, honey, youghurt, apple puree, tea/coffee. Location is very quiet and relaxing, out of the toruistic area of La Cité. Room was spacious, clean and had all the needed amenities. We couldn't try the swimming pool because of the weather, but it seemed a very good option. The garden area is very relaxing. The owners were very friendly but not intrusive. It was always clean and organised and the location if you have a car was perfect. Just off the ring road and only 10 minutes to La Cite or the town but still giving a rural feeling. We arrived when it was already dark, at about 20:00, it was difficult to find hotel in the darkness, as there is no large and visible sign about it. Nothing to mention. Only comment is if looking for some restaurants, there is nothing closeby so a car is required. The lack of meals and refreshments in the evening meaning you have to go out to eat. Breakfast, although continental and always fresh was not great value for money and no tea/coffee making facilities in the room. Only negative was the air conditioning wasn't switched on for the first two nights....they had trouble getting hold of technician, much cooler for our last night there. No shower in our room (but there was a nice bath). It's a little difficult to find also. Arrived sunday night and would have liked not to go out to find some other place for dinner. No restaurant. Nothing. Too far from Carcassonne and the Canal du Midi to walk into town. Apart from upmarket restaurant next door no facilities near by. Maybe it was the luck of the draw: after having stayed in a fabulous 5-star hotel in Andorra for less than 100 euros per room, having to pay rather more for a very basic hotel like this one just did not feel right.
