Melaluca on Mitchell is located in the heart of Darwin and is right across from Coles. It's surrounded by great pubs and restaurants. I booked a double bed accessible room with my own ensuite and the room was great value for money and fully accessible. I also loved that the aircon was so loud it blocked out most of the noise! The .only other comment I would make is to take the carpets out of the room(s)...they look dirty!.
all reviews » Great pool & bar! It's so warm in Darwin the pool is always being used. Rely enjoyed my stay at Melaleuca, I was travelling along and found it easy to make friends to have fun with. They have cleaners that work everyday, so bathroom is clean and the bedroom bins are always changed. The mess comes from other guests. -Super location in the center of town, opp. Coles supermarket. -Twin Room with Private Bathroom - basic but clean & comfortable -Big kitchen with hotplates & microwave for multiple users. -3rd floor has laundry area & veranda to catch the evening breeze - tightly run - alcohol only in the bar area. The pool and bar area were great. The communal bathrooms were excellent- very clean. There was a vast mixture of people and ages so I would recommend to solo travellers and families. Security guards at night time. The pool area was excellent for young families, kids loved the music there and us parents loved the bar. The staff were great, very friendly and helpful with advice on what to do in the city. I loved the location and the ease to the transit terminal as well as bus-stops, etc... - a brilliant central location no doubt. I liked the price I got to pay for my bed. Very busy! If u are travelling by yourself very easy to find friends! I like the pool on top and the bar area! In general really enjoyed staying there. The staff were really helpful and friendly. Rooms spotless. Tuesday night the drinks were cheap and you got a free sausage!. It was my first experience in a backpack accommodation and I enjoyed the stay. The staff were honest and helpful. As my family and I weren't arriving in Darwin until 11pm, and needed to pick-up a motorhome early the next morning, I was happy to stay here as I was literally just paying for somewhere to sleep. I wasn't expecting any frills and my expectations were met!. Staff was really friendly and organized. We felt safe in our room and the fan was really good. Room was clean. Coles was just across the the street. In general if you are a backpacker, then it's an ideal place where to socialize and chill. Location and happy hour. Vibrant crowd. Self catering and cooking facilities in the communal kitchen would be good for the budget if you could keep your sanity in there, but we didn't use them. In the middle of town very handy accommodation very cheap and comfort accordingly in one word value for money ( $25) per person per night recommend this place cheers. Second stay on return from East Timor, we were in room 9. Seemed to be for disabled people. Much more roomy and with power points!. the pool, the friendliness of staff and girls in the dorms, the washing facilities, the convenience for tour start. Value for money, friendly & helpful staff. I love the atmosphere! And the pool. Everyone is so friendly! I wish I never had to leave!. I left an ipod charging in one of the computers, it was found and returned 4 days later. Sebastian was very helpful Amd desk staff were great. Location was the only us. nothing specifically. Lockers in room. Cheap, clean. Very basic bedding. Small rooms etc. Too much smoking around the dining area. I didn't like the loud noise the ac made during the night (that's when i used the room). This was due to a lack of filter cleaning. Filters need to be cleaned more often especially i they are on 24/7. I didn't like the state of the showers/toilets. Given the large number of guests they were made dirty shortly after they were cleaned (10am ish). They need to be cleaned at last 3 times a day when most in use. It was difficult to charge something in the room)It was not enough sockets in the room so people were charging their mobiles in the corridors.... Unfortunately it was noisy, but not as bad as the other reviews say. The place was slightly damp. Cleanliness was okay but can be improved. The bed wasn't comfortable. Noise: it's a hostel in the city, so this is to be expected. nothing. Not enough powerpoints in the room. Also the bed frames creek and make a lot of noise. The constant noise of the air conditioner. A note in the room asked patrons not to turn it off. It was annoying. The room smelt unclean and the pillows and sheets smelt. No TV in room. The bed. All good. Air in the rooms was stale. No open windows.. Understandable though with air con. I did not find the city so interesting, but the parks in the surroundings are fantastic. Only 1 pillow. Although the bedding had probably been laundered, it had definitely seen some action; all 4 sets of bedding could've done with replacing/burning. Unfortunately we had really noisy aircon and our room was really close to the pool area, where music constantly played. So if we wanted to go to sleep a bit earlier, it was pretty hard (once again perfect place for a bacpacker). Mattress was a bit unconfortable as well, but it's a really small thing to pick on. Dirt and water on floor of changing area in communal shower. The price is not low enough to reflect just how basic the accommodation really is...eg no chair or desk in room, recharge phones etc from a cleaners power point near the floor, very hard bed with noisy springs, very thin sheets and pillows....I Could go on... . . . For the money we paid per person per night it was all we wanted , a bed to sleep in so no no complaints. First stay..........room had no accessible power points to recharge mobile phones. Only booked in for a short overnight stay before flying out very early to East Timor. definitely a party place, the first sheet I got was torn but I still had to pay a deposit for it. booked a double room but was given a twin room. Staff attempted to rectify but were unable to. the noise. i know it's a backpackers, but it is way over the top for noise. the aircon slightly drowns out the drunks, just put your earplugs in to drown out the aircon! also the bathrooms need to have WAY more ventilation. there are no fans and it gets insanely hot and steamy in there, you can not get dry. Tiny room. Understaffed Lots of Irish people/tradies living at the back-packers Loud Seedy. The mattress!! I stayed for 7 days and I don't think my back could handle another night on that bed! Get something with springs! I'm only 21 with no back issues!. I booked a single room but it was just a room with 4 bunk beds that I had to myself. It was so damp that the carpet squelched and there was condensation running down the walls. I had to wash and dry all my clothes to get rid of the dampness and smell. The place seemed to run on the basis that guests would steal or break anything that wasn't nailed down. I am aware that I am not part of the age profile that the Melaleuca is aiming at, but I found it noisy, intrusive and unfriendly. I fell in the shower about two hours after my stay i mentioned it to staff and there was nothing done at all, i checked in to the back packers inn asking it the rooms was a ensuit room and told yes then i realised not only qas there not a ensuit but inwas sharing with 3 other people so i booked in to the value inn but was stiill charged $85 for 10 minutes. Im very unhappy about thw whole situatiom. The smell of bo and bad feet from share rooms. Leaking toilet flooded the shower /toilet area and wasn't cleaned until 6 hours later. It was very dirty and wet most of the day. Plastic covered mattress was very uncomfortable,would not consider staying there again. Good for young people wanting to live like feral animals. expensive, nothing available, the famous upper terrace has a childrens swimming pool, and if u want a fork u need to rent it and pay for... definitely a place not to go back. one of my worst experiences throughout australia. Staff rude, poor value for money, party hostel, would not recommend. very, very basic - I guess you get what you pay for.
